Hey there. So, after our weekend at Platinum Devil, we decided to try out our new armies on a bigger field, and use some of the models we didn't get a chance to at the weekend. What we found out for sure is that 1500pts of Grots and 1500pts of non-mech IG is a hell of a lot of models on the table at once. We didn't have time to document every move, so here's some lovely pics throughout the game and a more general commentaty. Pics by Panic, commentary by me....

Drade Suicide Legion - 1500pts Imperial Guard

* CCS with 4 meltaguns, Chimera
* Veterans with 3 Meltaguns, Demolitions, Chimera
* PBS
* PBS
* Penal Legionnaires
* Penal Legionnaires
* Penal Legionnaires
* Penal Legionnaires
* 6 Ogryns
* 8 Roughriders
* Devildog
* Devildog

Panic's Grots - 1500pts Orks

* Big Mek, KFF
* Big Mek, KFF
* Megagrotz
* Grots Squad
* Grots Squad
* Grots Squad
* Deff Dred
* Deff Dred
* 3 Kans
* 3 Kans
* 3 Kans
* 3 Buggies
* 3 Buggies
* 3 Buggies

Game is Seize Ground, Dawn of War with four objective, all placed in the middle ground. Grots go first, but Penal Legion deploy nothing in their setup, and so Grots come onto the board with nothing to shoot at. Penal Legion then deploy behind the main trench line on the left flank.

Ogryns and Rough Riders use the Devildogs for cover while the PBS advance along the trenches.

In the second turn, the Grots still advance full throttle, and the Buggies manage to immobilise one of the Devildogs. Penal Legion target the Buggies, killing some but failing to make a big impression.

A squad of Knife-Fighting Legionnaires arrive on the right flank to flee one of the Meks and the grot squad holding the right hand objective. Unfortunately, the rest of the outflanking rolls go really badly and everything else turns up on the other side, later in the game. The single squad of Legionnaires are taken apart in later turns by the nearby Kans.

The Kan Wall advances, unmolested as the Legion concentrate fire on the Buggies, and the assault units slowly move into the treches

Around turn four, once the Kans are close enough, the Ogryns and Rough Riders make their move over the trenches to assault.

But the Ogryns have killed the nearest Kan with their Ripper Guns, and now roll low on their Difficult Terrain Test and can't make the charge. The Rough Riders, assaulting the Deff Dred, roll low as well, and both assaults fail. The Kan Wall advances for the final time...

And then charges! The final Kan manages to break the Ogryns, who flee off the table, and the Deff Dread gets locked in with some Rough Riders who can't hurt it (since they didn't get the charge).

Kans assault a trench bunker, destroying it and advancing through the rubble towards the PBS inside. But their own shooting scatters back onto them, immobilising it, and meaning it can't charge to finish them off.

At the end of the game, the Legionnaires are still advancing from the wrong side of the table, and the Veterans disembark and take out Kans, but none of the Guard can move fast enough to capture any more objectives.

The Veterans hold the trench objective

A squad of Grots hold the central objective, as they have all game

And the squad of Grots in reserve move on to take objective that was abandoned earlier in the game. 2-1 Win to Grots!

So, a quick report but with some fantastic images. Panic had the game from the start, I had a few unlucky breaks, but probably should have deployed over a broader front, or used some of the Legionnaires to hold my closest objectives instead of Outflanking everything. The Kans were almost unmolested by the time they closed with me, and, though meltas took out a lot, none of my troops were far enough forward to contest anything. Good game all round....

Hey guys,

Gotta say I love reading and seeing your pics. Sweet armies, this time around, nothing cookie cutter about either.

Ian, what do you think about the Penal legions? I really like them but the outflanking seems to make or break them. I take mine with the Astropath to reroll the outflanking. Storyline wise, the Astropath is part of the wardens squad and there as an emotive stimulator/inhibitor. Lack of AT also hurts legionairres but for 80 points what can you expect. Against walkers they don't really have much going for them, except maybe stubborn to tarpit (works nicely on units of 2-3 marines, as well).

Well, I've only been learning to use them over the last few games and tourney, but with four squads it's a steep curve!

I find them very useful as long as they're used in the spirit they're intended - as suicide squads! I always take them with the Astropath, so that I can re-roll sides, which makes them much more reliable, thought you can always be unlucky (like this game). Generally, if the squad has rolled Gunslingers, I'll bring them in on my side of the table and grab nearby objectives. In cover, with stubborn, they can be hard to whittle down with fire.

If they've rolled Psychopaths of Knife Fighters, they come in on the enemy side and charge straight into combat. The Knife Fighters can actually be very effective AT if used this way - 31 rending attacks on the charge, any 6 to hit automaticaly glances most vehicles and penetrates on a 3+. If you bring them in right at the back of the field, you're likely to be targetting artillery pieces that maybe haven't moved far, so you're either hitting automatically or on a 4+. This worked successfully in a few tournament games. Against walkers it's not as good - the higher front armour gets you, but Stubborn makes them very good tarpits.

Just gorgeous - flavoursome, crazy, brilliant armies. Looks like a White Dwarf 2nd ed game and I mean that as the highest compliment!

Wow, whoops-a-daisy on the deployment there. Sure the trenchline on the left gave you lots of cover, but as you discovered too late, that hardly mattered as this was an objectives game, not kill points.

Otherwise, I agree with everyone about the nice models, and it's a very welcome change to see someone who actually has nice terrain on their home boards.

Exactly. I think my vague plan was to castle up since he HAS to run towards me, and use the trenches as obstacles to give me more shooting turns. I hadn't banked on all my objective-grabbing Legionnaires going the wrong way, and that there were so many models in the army they wouldn't really fit in a 'castled' position in the corner!!

Thanks. The whole army is converted from Void 1.1 Junkers, and those are the Void 1.1 Sandrunner models. You can still find them on eBay, but make sure you get the first edition ones - the new Sandrunner models are much more spindly and camel-like...

EDIT - P&M Blog for the army is here - http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/257179.page - you can see the construction of them....
