That's a really good start. Well done. You've got the right colour and good tones and shading.

Although, I would suggest that you start off each model with an undercoat. By spraying them (GW Black spray will do fine), you provide a good base coat that the paint will stick to better and not flake off as much over time. Also, crucially, by starting off from a black base, you get a lot of shadows painted in for you, meaning that if you accidentally miss a bit in a recess, it is painted black, as you would want it to be.

It looks like you have given the plastic models a quick coating of black wash. This won't achieve the same thing unfortunately.

But keep it up and keep posting your minis!

If you don't like the black primer, there are some white or greys you can get.

Definetly use a primer coat. I use Duplicolour white primer, does a great job, cheap, and you can do much more than just painting on bare plastic.

Fair enough if you did use white and then black wash. Just funny that it ends up giving the minis the same basic grey colour that they come with before you do anything to them!

I use black for virtually all of the minis I paint due to the shadows issue I mentioned earlier. When working to a bright final colour, I would really recommend the GW Foundation paints. They cover exceptionally well and tricky colours like yellow can be easily achieved with a couple of thin coats of Iyanden Sun (I think it's called). The Orkhide Shade is very good for a green base for example. The Dheneb Stone can be used as a base that can eventually be lightened to white.

If you don't have them already, go into a GW store (if you have one locally) and ask them for a demo. My local one is usually keen to push the painting products and may let you have a play around with them.

You know, more and more I'm starting to like white as a basecoat over black. I used to be exclusively black, but I wanted my Kan's to be brighter, so used that, and I was really happy with it. I'm of mixed opinion. The one thing I have not yet tried is a neutral gray.

I like the black basecoat for a simple reason. if you leave a nook black it is a shadow. if you primed it white it has to be painted over or shaded over until it is not brighter than the painted areas around it.
