Nice example of the enviromental weapons system
guildwars 2 article wrote:So the weapons you're currently holding in your hands determine your first five skills. This system is the basic building block of Guild Wars 2 combat, but when playing around with it we found that we could extend it into a huge variety of cool situations. For example, when a player interacts with a siege weapon, his first five skills change to skills that are specific to that siege weapon. A player might encounter a boulder in the world and, upon picking it up, find that his skills have changed so that he can now throw that boulder. Discovering a drake nest might yield eggs that can be picked up, and then eaten or thrown. The things a character can do with an environmental weapon vary by profession or race. An Elementalist with a boulder can not only throw it, but can launch it into the air, causing it to rocket down from the sky with the impact of a meteor. In addition to objects that are simply found in the world, many of these environmental weapons are created spontaneously through various events and activities. Wooden planks used to smack enemies can be gained by killing oakhearts, or found in the rubble caused by centaurs breaking down a wooden gate. Breaking a barstool over the head of a rowdy bar patron can yield a chair leg that can be used to great effect as a club.

An example of the team synergies and class combo's
guildwars 2 article wrote:A warrior and an Elementalist playing together could combine their abilities in several different ways. The Elementalist could drop down Static Field, which is an area-targeted lightning effect. A warrior who fires a rifle bullet through the static field would cause his shot to be charged up with electricity, inflicting additional damage. If that didn't suit their style, then the Elementalist might drop a Wall of Fire in front of a group of enemies. The warrior could enter the firewall and use Cyclone Axe, an attack which causes him to spin rapidly, sending the firewall outward and hitting his foes. There are literally hundreds of combinations for players to discover.

Im going to be attending gamescom 2010 in kologne in august and will be one of the first to play this game at the event so ill get back to you on how it is

Sounds cool, though I must admit, GW 1 is really boring right now. I am not sure I am going to get GW2 (well, probably will, because it IS free to play.....). Also, these things sound cool, and unique, so it might be something I will have to look at.

Did it say how many skills there are after the 5? Still only 8 total?

10 total; 5 from your current weapon, 1 self heal, 1 elite and 3 free.

Aye, I see that now. Can't wait to play a Charr, it's going to be awesome

Even more stuff, now 3 proffessions and lots of info!

The elementalist is the standard mage that uses the 4 elements to protect allies and decimate foes, gains traits by study of ancient books in dungons or by meditating in a spot of elemenal power.

The warrior, the big guy with access to all close combat weaons - gains traits by smashing things, eating and drinking.

The ranger, think aragon from LOTR these guys are true wildsmen and are skilled with bows as well as swords, daggers and even axes (they throw the axe though) however also can lay traps and invoke the spirits of nature to alter the battlefeild and can tame up to 3 pets at once from both land and sea (only one pet can be out at a time and pets level with you).

I'm a big fan of the Guildwars series and Guildwars Nightfall. The gameplay looks awesome but the Elder Dragons storyline looks a bit iffy. Basically they trashed everything setup in the previous games so everything seems like it was for naught. At least new players to the series won't feel compelled to play the first series unless they want the extra bodyguards and items (rewards for playing the first series and unlocking stuff in the Hall of Monuments)

From the character classes, it looks like they are re-releasing the original 5 classes from the first game which is shame as I was a big dervish fan (my PVE avatar of Dwayna Dervish rocked). Hopefully there will be a good hybrid class players can mess around with as you cannot multi class in GW2 which is both good and bad. I could probably settle for a Beastmaster spec ranger as they were always fun.

Actually there will be 8 classes

Elementalist, warrior, ranger, assassin, knight/paladin, engineer, necromancer and mesmer are the current guesses.

We know that necromancers are in the lore at this point and we have lots of concept art for a paladin looking heavy armour class that uses mostly maces as well as having lots of assassin concept art and a stealth mechanic in game (plus daggers).

Great stuff. I hope the "paladin" class is not 1 dimensional like the WoW pally. Hopefully I can find a class that can operate like the dervish.

I am pretty much with you on the guesses. They fit the info I have read. Therefore we could assume:

Scholar Classes: 3
1. Elementalist (more or less the same)
2. Mesmer (they wouldn't kill Mesmer or the PVPers will cry)
3. Necro (see Mesmer)

Adventurer Classes: 3
1. Ranger (more or less the same)
2. Assassin (probably will be the same glass cannon combo assassin we all love)
3. Engineer (probably a ranged support class. This fulfils the clue of the class that can use guns but not bows. Might be able to use melee weapons as well. Hopefully it is not similar to ranger. Could operate in a DPS capable role like the dervish)

Soldier Classes: 2
1. Warrior (more or less the same)
2. Paladin (probably plays like a Paragon/Monk hybrid)

To tell the truth, I hope the "Engineer" is really a "Musketeer" or "Highwayman". Would be awesome to be able to wield two pistols, me thinks.

I really hope they add the Ritualist back in, he's my favorite class and the one I am getting Kind of a Big Deal with right now

(And yes, my rit can do so much more than SoS)

Do we have a list of that stuff and what unlocks it yet?

No unfortunately not. From the sounds of what they were talking about, I don't think there will be much items rewarded from playing the earlier game. The big thing from their view will be your character being able to view your trophies in GW2.

Storywise your GW2 character is supposed to be a distant relation of your GW2 character.

Mm from the sound of it the hall of monuments will only give a few aestetic options as well as some acheivements (think ps3/xbox 360 style) in game, but oh well it will be good to get a fresh start.

There will be 8 classes, mesmer is confirmed and the 8th class will be totally new.

That looks really cool. Any idea what the system requirements would be?

Like the first game they are trying to minimise system requirements so if you have a mid-range pc now you could probably play it pretty well.

I'm going to say direct x 9 capable graphics card, 2gm ram and a decent hard drive should run it ok.

If you really want to scrape the barrel 1024MB ram may do it...

We don't know tbh so I am just basing it on half remembered setting descriptions in the options when I played the demo.

I wonder what the firearms specialist is gonna be like. I mean rangers are thea rchery specialist, warriors CAN have firearms but aren't specialists in them...

The thief can duel wield pistols which is a start but I'm thinking there will be a steampunkish tech based class not unlike the TF2 engineer absorbing the stationary spirits (redone as turrets) from the Rt and filling the left over medium armour slot that will probably use rifles and pistols.

It seems pretty likely from the looks of things as one of the major character archtypes in the books that can't really be portrayed with any of the current professions is the mad scientist/tinkerer type character which would fit quite nicely with the asuran and charr tech levels however the same can't really be said about norn and sylvari so I'm unsure.

As much as I hate to double post, NEW REVEAL

The thief

The thief has access to short range teleportation, temporary invisibility and has access to pistols, daggers, swords and shortbows.

Damn.

Every new reveal has me saying "I wanna play that"

Also, Scorpion Wire made me say "GET OVER HERE!" during that vid

Edit: Nobody had better have the name Garret right now >.>

The scorpion wire is ripped straight from mortal combat which makes it even more awesome

That skill video in general had some pretty amazing visuals.

So.... We have a Duel Pistol user, but he isn't the Fire Arm specialist......

If your Right, Corpses, and it ends up being a Rit In Mechanic type of class, I definately have a class for myself. If not..... I don't know who I am going to be....

The skritt in the cluster shot video

"chaaaarge!"

*explosion decimates half of the group*

"RUN AWAY! RUN AWAY!"

Also the two figures left on the profession silhouette page are a charr and a female norn, the norn probably the mesmer so that leaves the most industrial race to portray the 8th profession... Tech based proff gets more likely by the minute.

Looks like Thief replaced Assassin.

By the way, I wonder what happened to Cantha anyway?
