Submitted for your approval, is my very own scratch built Seismic Hammer for a Space Marine Dreadnought. This is my first time writing a tutorial so apologies if I don't explain myself well and I'll try to be as descriptive as possible

Step 1
First off all, to make your own Hammer your going to need a bunch of bits. Now I'm sure your own bits will vary from mine, so I've listed what I used and will explain what I did so hopefully if you like my design and have similar bits you can make your own and fill in the gaps with your own.

Here's what I used (please note that not all bitz I put out were used in the end, so have only numbered what was)
(1) A SM Dozer Blade(1) from the old Rhino kits
(2) A metal SM Missile launcher possibly Rogue Trader
(3) A Blaster from a Zoids kit
(4) A Star Wars Rifle used by Weequay (thanks Linguo)
(5) A Dreadnought CC Claw bought from Forge World (I used left and right claws)
(6) A SM Dozer Blade(2) from the old Rhino kits
(7) Rivets from a SM Biker Sprue
(8) Heavy Bolter Ammo feeds
(9) The most important, the Dreadnought itself

Step 2
Next step was to design a style and look. I chose the Halo 3 Thunder Hammer as my template and wanted it to be able to be held in both dreadnought hands and not one handed.

Step 3
I took item 4 and removed the very top of the lance but left the blade part on, making the lance appear like a bayonett. I then took item 2 and removed the excess metal molding at the bottom and filled it flat. I then glued item 2 on top of item 4 giving it a more hammer like feel with a heavy bulk at the top.

I then took items 1 and 6 (the dozer blades) and cut them in half. Both were then filled down to remove excess so that each part had rivets-plate-rivets-plate-rivets as shown in the picture below. The same was then done for the blades. Also as noted in the picture, the slits in the dozer blade were increased in size and turned into triangles to give a more styled appearence than small slits.

The ammo feeds had the links removed leaving just the box. Both boxes were then glued inside the curve of each dozer panel. The blades were then glued inside these doxer panels in the opposite direction, so rather than follow the curve they turned into the curve and fit perfectly into the slits in the panel.

Step 4
The staff didn't look too secure, so to strengthen it I took 2x item 7 and after filing the other side I glued these one at each side of the staff to give it more support and also bulk it out slightly

Stef 5
After much deliberation on which direction to place the parts I enventually decided to glue both panels either side of item 2 the missile launcher against the flat part that I ensured were filled down. I placed them with the blades pointed downward.

Step 6
It was at this time I noted that the hammer lenght was not enough to allow the dreadnought to hold it in both hands so I took item 3 and cut off the muzzle of the gun and a section of barrel. I then filled this down and glued it to the end on the staff thus increasing its overall lenght.

The claws for the dreadnought had been glued in place slightly part allowing the staff to fit between the claws and give the impression of him holding it.

Step 7
This step is currently unfinished. To complete this project all I need to now due it paint all the appropriate parts and then glue them in place adding strength if needed. The weapon is currently propped up for the purpose of showing you how the dreadnought will be holding it. Once painting is finished it will be glued permenantly in place.

In Closing
I really hope this has been easy to read and is helpful to anyone that it interests. I'm only just starting on stratch building so please take that into account if you comment as I'm on a learning curve. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Thats creative and really good scratch build for a beginner. That gave me some pretty good ideas too. keep up the awesome builds!

Sweet looking dread! the 2h fits well without looking too clunky

out of pure nerdish interest, item 4 is actually a weapon from the original StarWars figures belonging to a guy called Weequay (might be the race name+they have heads like old prunes)

weirdly on this list its also item 4!

yes I did make an account just to post this :(

just a thought, maybe the hammers head could do with some downsizing, also i don't think this, or any weaponry, can or needs to be wielded in 2 hand by a dreadnaught, anyways an nice start, with a couple of tweaks it could turn out quite nicely :-) keep it up

Cool conversion, crappy pics though, makes me sad panda. I like it, two-handed seismic hammer is quite epic.

Very cool hammer that is. Better quality pics to show it off would be good so we can get more details shown.

Yes I can only profusely apologise on the quality of pictures, I took over 20 and picked the best ones. Thankfully have found my old cybershot camera which has never given me issues.

Thank you Linguo, it was given to me by a friend, I assumed they were all rogue trader parts so will amend accordingly, and welcome to Dakka

While the Hammer is not really a two handed weapon I simply couldn't help myself as personally I think it looks a lot better than being one handed.

This weekend I will be hopefully painting it fully, so I plan to get more pictures up by sunday weather permitting .. .. I do live in the UK after all Thanks all for your comments

Wow. The concept of dreads with non built in close combat weapons is awesome!!!

Ok, have brought out my old Sony Cybershot out of retirement so have been able to take much sharper images. So I proudly present my next addition.

Step 8
After all parts had been allowed to dry and glue set I base coated the two dreadnought arms and the weapon itself in Chaos Black Spray

Step 9
Next was to add some colour. My Chapter colours are that of the Sable Swords so its all blacks and bits of white, but for vehicles I was worried about not getting the white to look right so instead am using Boltgun Metal and Blood Angels red to add details.

Most of the colours are self explainatory and have gone straight from pot to model. I'm still learning to paint so my styles are basic, but leaving it basic will make it easier to practice on it in future when I'm ready.

My theme was mainly to paint sections in boltgun metal where rivets are, and red for pipework, though in the pictures its showing as orange, lol

Next stages I post will be more details and colour to the model as well as completing the base properly.

There's a full set of pics in the modelling thread I made, so if you want to see more angles then please stop by

While I'm not fond of the final design of the hammer, but I greatly approve of the fact that it is two-handed, and that it's slightly too big - I'm all about over-the-top. I personally would like it if it had a meatier "head" to it, for whaling on stuff - but that's my own personal aesthetic.

I could, but it would be a pain for the dreadnought to have to wrench it off the tank everytime it smashes something. Tanks are metal after all

In all seriousness I'm not sure that magnetizing would work, it would be hard to fit them and even harder to fit them without it looking god awful. As it happens the pose is such that the staff of the hammer fits firmly in its claws with no risk of coming out unless the model gets tipped. I had thought about pinning them, as I'd like the option to remove the one hand and turn it into a normal dread if needed as I don't want to glue it in place if I don't have to.
