Hey,

i just finished the test model for my Raven Guard. Just looking for some feedback i guess, what do you think of it?

It is the start of a "Raid on Kastorel-Novem" raven Guard force, i'll also do elysians.

looks good just two things...first is pretty obvious, basing it will improve the overall appearance drastically, and another fine highlihgt of straight codex grey on the prominent edges...still looks really good how it is though

Oh yeah, basing will definitely help. I want to paint all the models first before i work out a basing scheme as it has to work with my elysians too.

I think you're right about another highlight being needed, but i think codex grey would be too stark for the look i'm trying to acheive. maybe adeptus battlegrey?

One thing that I've learned that makes black look far, far better:

Do a basecoat of 50% Charadon Granite and 50% Chaos Black. The Granite adds a bit of depth to the color that a flat black coat doesn't.

Loving the freehand chapter logo! I could never do anything like that!

One point - maybe some boltgun metal or something on the joints at the back of the legs?

Would this work for black legionairres too?

"And what are the achievements of your fragile Imperium? It is a corpse rotting slowly from within while maggots writhe in its belly. It was built with the toil of heroes and giants, and now it is inhabited by frightened weaklings to whom the glories of those times are half-forgotten legends."

Looking good, I quite like the subtle highlights but it would be good to see what it looks like with just a starker highlight on the extreme edges.

Great work all in all ^^

I would suggest, when you work on the base use something like sand or snow. Bright bases really make black models pop. Awesome job none the less!

That's an excellent looking Raven Guard marine! My friend is doing Raven Guard, and I know for a fact how hard it is to paint that raven symbol on his shoulderpad. My only concern is that the model is too black. Raven Guard are a Codex chapter, corresponding company colours would do wonders for models as dark as this. Looks great though, can't wait to see full group pics!

Hey thanks for all the kind words guys!

I think i will add one more highlight.

Bases will eventually be done with sand.

Company colours are a good idea Granesh, completely forgot about them

@ Kanluwen: There's actually no black on the model. It was painted 50/50 adeptus battlegrey/chaos black, then highlighted with adeptus battlegrey, then washed with badab. I suppose your way is the same principle, i have to agree that flat black doesn't look right any more for me!

I'll try and get some changes added, and then put some more pics up.

What colour shoulder rim would a 5th Co. Raven Guard marine have??

they would have the same as a ultramarine 5th company rim can't recall what that is right now it might be green

anyway loving the chapter symbol very impressed this was done freehand

Good suggestion as far as the base business goes What I do and swear by is sanding bases prior to priming them that way its already all their you just need to paint it

I wouldn't actually do too much hard lining with codex grey on the edges. Just on the sharpest ones. I think black looks much better when it's dark. Also, you'd be better off just using decals for the Raven Guard chapter symbol; it's really hard to paint, and even if you got the hang of it it probably takes a long time to make.

freehand came out really well, looking forward to seeing more

Thanks for the kind words!

I think i'm just going to glue sand to the bases, then pretty them up with weathering powders. When i get some i'll also be dirtying up the marines using weathering powders.

@ Gaznab: The hearldic colour for 5th Co. is actually black so i don't nee to change it!! yay!

@ DarkAngelsRK: I'm inclined to agree with you on the hard-lining, i like my black black if you know what i mean. Oh ye of little faith! I can do the freehand but you are correct that it takes ages. I've never liked transfers though. We'll see.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
It appears that Raven guard don't have Co. colours. They use green for tac squads, red for assault and yellow for devs.

Lovely freehand work.

And I don"t think the model is too black. You can see that it's a got a bit of grey in it and the dark blue on the Boltgun is brilliant.

Agreed on a sandy/snowy base though, something quite bright to add a bit more contrast to the model.

Looking forward to seeing some more of these guys.
