Guilliman was leadership, I remember them talking about how Guilliman was basically designed to take over the Imperium once the Emperor was done, but then he decided he liked Horus better.

Them who?
Guilliman was only primed to take over the Imperium after both the Emperor and Horus were dead. He wasn't even in the top 5 of respected Primarchs before that.

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

I think the EC would have been an important and leading legion in the Imperium if not for the Heresy.
Horus=the Emperor's ambition.
I think the Ultramarines. They were by far the most numerically prevalent, so you would have to expect them to have done a hell of a lot of work in the Crusade. The EC underwent a disaster that almost destroyed them (we haven't learned what yet) and so were forced to fight alongside the Lunar Wolves for much of the early days of the Crusade.
And wasn't Horus supposed to be the ultimate balance of character? Hence why he was chosen to be Warmaster in the Emperor's absence.

I wonder about your assumption. Although it isn't carved in fluff as much as insinuated, the Ultramarines absorbed the remnants of the two legions which shall not be named. This has to account for something. I think this was allowed to happen so that the Ultramarines could offset the size of the Word Bearers. Perhaps the emperor suspected something all along.
