Cultist of Nurgle with Open Sores
|
Personally, I do like the new codex, though I'd have liked an option for daemon weapons aside of artfacts (too expensive for too little). The option to take Nurgle marks for just about everything, the lots of options and the lowers costs of much appeals to me a lot, especially since now the Cultists, the Obliterators and just everyone can contribute and benefit from Epidemius' Tally of Nurgle.
Those Obliterator assault cannons are going to do a lot to contribute to the tally of Nurgle, with 4 shots for each obliterator... Imagine those 4 shots ignoring Armour and Feel No Pain 3+ on Obliterators... and those cultists hordes with the same and rapid fire weapons (AP1) for only about 6 points each...

I dunno, I really like this Codex. It was received very well at my FLGS, as well.
I like that it feels a lot more like the 3.5 Codex. Could they have added more stuff, sure. But I think this is great improvement over the last one. Kelley did a good job, I think.

I would have to agree with those saying they felt like it was a missed opportunity for creativity. On one hand, I am glad that GW seems to have made it with an eye towards balance, but on the other hand, I really wasn't expecting (or even wanting) a Grey Knights level of "broken" either. I was just hoping for a little more craziness. More of a return to the off-the-wall creativity of the second ed. dex for example.
I was hoping for that, and to have some of the "holes" filled in. Like lack of drop pods for example. It's great that they gave us back cultists, but that was a unit that never should have been removed in the first place imo. Then, instead of getting something really useful (like drop-pods) we got two versions of Raptors and an army list where fully two thirds of the entries are taken up by HQ and Elites choices. It's top heavy to a silly degree and I think it's more than a little funny that the White Dwarf that previewed this release featured an article by Jervis talking about how GW is not about limiting players choices in what they could take and then released a codex that actually DOES kind of limit what you can do in one army. Yes, the new codex does give a wider over-all range of possabilities, but you can't use them at the same time. For example, as written, both the Warpsmith and the Dark Apostle should probably have been elites choices. That would have allowed you to play an army with a proper lord, a sorcerer AND the DA. Now the only way to do that is a dual FOC, and 2000pt games are as rare as Bigfoot in my area. Moving the cult troops to Elites further complicates things, and further contributes to a top heavy structure. I would rather have seen the DA and Warpsmith as elites and the cult troops placed back as actual troops.
Then there's the creativity aspect. How much cooler for example, would the Apostle have been with a rule that allowed you to take "x" number of IG units without paying the "allies tax". Maybe you then have to keep them near him at all times or something like that. I was expecting more things like this and less of things like unit redundancy and a top heavy FOC. Instead they seemed to put more creativity into ideas like giving all of the good things horrible draw-backs.
Over all I don't necessarily think it's a bad release. I just don't think it's as cool or fun as it could/should have been. It's like they got *this close*. And then just didn't quite push it far enough. I could easily be wrong about it, and maybe as time goes on I will see builds that really excite me, but for me, that's the biggest issue right now. There are very few things that excite me, and most of them have potentially crippling drawbacks (like choosing between a Warpsmith or a sorcerer because there are few 2000pt games here and I like my Lord). There's just nothing in this release that makes me go "Hell yeah! I want THAT!"
So yeah, not a terrible release, but not really causing me to rush out and update my existing Chaos army either.
EDIT:
Forgot to add that I found it frustrating that the first codex of the new edition has so many weird bugs in it. Like the blind ax giving you rage but needing to have the Mark of Khorne to get it (meaning you likely already have rage), or the weird "no more than 10 plaque zombies" rule. I hope this all gets errata as soon as possible.

Edit: I just googled ablutions and apparently it does not including dropping a duece. I should have looked it up early sorry for any confusion. - Baldsmug

"Kids these days...
... I invented the 6th Ed meta back in 3rd ed.
Wait, what were we talking about again? Did I ever tell you about the time I gave you five bees for a quarter? That's what you'd say in those days, "give me five bees for a quarter", is what you'd say in those days. And you'd go down to the D&D shop, with an onion in your belt, 'cause that was the style of the time. So there I was in the D&D shop..." |
