Parts of this discussion reminded me of an episode of the old "Blake's 7" (Blake's 7 - S2 E02 'Shadow' ).
Where the crew find out that the president of the federation is also the head of the terra nostra crime syndicate.
Blake says, "It is quite logical, to have total control you must control totally. Both sides of the law."

What do the American posters think of it? If it were me, I'd be pretty annoyed about it, especially given how no one seems happy with the two main parties these days anyway.
Here's an article from the Guardian, which has a left wing bias, but I couldn't find much in any more "reputable" news source and nothing from any of the mainstream US sites, in the first few google results anyhow. Which seemed strange to me!
http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/oct/18/jill-stein-arrest-green-party-presidential-debate?INTCMP=SRCH
Apparently, she tried to get in, was pushed backwards, and then sat down outside. She was then arrested and carried away to a police station where she was held for the duration of the debate.
Seems like the sort of thing that happens in countries less famed for their democratic values than the US.
Mate, I read the Guardian daily to keep up on affairs on the left, its the worst rag in Britain! At least the Daily Fail actually speaks to most people, because most people are socially right wing. Even the labour voter is usually reserving some distaste for paedophiles and burglars and illegal immigrants.
I was reading it two days ago where they had about 8 columnists saying how Miliband was REAL PM material even though he is a weak chinned effeminate fop with a speech impediment, whilst simultaneously slamming Cameron because he isn't a good speaker?!
Say what you like about him, but he CAN speak.. Ed Miliband sounds like he has three plums in his mouth when he talks.
But I digress, Ill take this story seriously when I see it on BBC news.

It would be interesting to see what would happen if the other parties were given similar (or at least proportional) airtime as the two big parties. I think America could really do with the reds and blues getting getting their collective butts kicked by some of the other parties so it is not such a two horse race (where both horses are pretty much clones of one another ).

If you guys are not familiar with Jill Stein, you should go check out her platform. It has an awful lot of appeal for reasonable people, in my opinion. I don't agree with everything she says - specially about nuclear energy (but what do you expect from the Green Party) but I like what she has to say generally.

I've looked at the party platform and while there is some good stuff in there ( I particularly like their views on election reform), they tend to go completely off the deep end with the environmental issues. I mean I understand that's the core of their party, but there's realistic, sustainable green thinking and then there is bat gak crazy, head in the clouds, tree-hugging, enviro-nazis...and they tend to be a little too close to the latter for comfort.

Temper a sizable minority of elected Green party officials within the established political process and I think that environmental drive will be sufficiently blunted, while still giving enough of a fresh breeze (pun intended) to the political process to help blow away some of the stalemate that has existed for the last few decades.

Here is what you do. If you do not like either the D or R candidate, vote for someone else. Do not just sit it out.
Some states of course have more limited ballots than others.
Write in if you have to. The problem with write in is, if the race is not won by write in, they never count up how many votes for each. So the numbers here never count towards that "15%"
Chances are, even if more than 15% of the vote went to say the Libertarian Party, the debate firm would still ban them by upping the numbers. This is what they have done in the past. The number to be allowed into the debates used to be 8%.

I envy anybody not living in Oklahoma, because none of that is an option here. It's D or R or nobody else, writing a name disqualifies your entire ballot.

Remember a few years back, during the Oregon governor's election, that Donald Duck, followed by Michael Jackson led all write in ballots, and actually beat the 3rd place "printed" candidate? Apparently, Kitzhaber was not well liked

There's also the issue of winner take all system that a lot of states run with, doesn't matter if you won 49.8% of the vote...the team that got that 50.2% wins everything

I bet her voters (like my mother) think that she's really "cool" and "edgy" for getting arrested, and that the police are trash and scum for doing their jobs.
It's fine to want to debate, and prove your worth the the american people (or maybe those 12 people who are voting for her), but that isn't the correct venue.

It's the presidential debates. If that's not the correct venue for a presidential candidate to debate their positions, what is?

Yea I remember the last round of Oregon elections. Kitzhaber is really not that well liked. We had him before. Then he took some time off, and came back (skirting around that no more than 2 terms in a row law) like the plague, we had a couple cases of that lately too.
He sucked then, he sucks now. He brought us the Oregon Health Plan, basically cut a deal with the Federal Gov to change Medicaid in Oregon to OHP. He said it would be fantastic, and the state could handle it better. Within a year he had bankrupted it, then had to make huge cuts. OHP is now worse than your average Medicaid plans for any other state.
It was an interesting test, but it failed. Rather than go back to the system of Medicaid, Oregonians generally thought let's keep going with the worse option.
Yeah!!!
