If they improve the sculpts, yes. I won't throw them away, though. I'll have to get back to you on what I plan on doing with them haha.

My cousin dumped his metal Plaguebearers when the plastic ones came out. I have absolutely no idea why and couldn't get him to explain.

Some people just need the new shiny, I guess. Me, I like old models. Even if they look a little goofy sometimes, other times they're absolutely full of character and look great in the right army.

Before the 7th ed Eldar codex dropped, I had 12 of the old Jetbikes. In 6th they were good, but not spammably good. When it was rumored that new kits were coming, I toyed with the idea of selling my old ones and just getting 2 units for the new ones (remember in 6th Eldar bikes were just objective grabbers that hid in Reserves).

Then the White Dwarf came out with the new rules for them and instead of cutting down on bikes, I needed more. Too many to start from scratch, so I got the last 2 boxes of old bikes. My OCD couldn't handle having old and new bikes, so all mine ore the old ones. So now I have 18 old Jetbike with 10 of them converted with Scatterlasers and 8 without

That's the only time I have come close to "replacing" minis. I only ever get rid of minis when I haven't used them for over a year because I've been using better options. This doesn't happen with "collection" pieces like all my Harlies that I'll probably never use, but were fun to paint

I dumped an entire army of metal Mordians for modular, resin 3rd party similar models. While there's a certain appeal to the nostalgia of the old models (shout out to BrotherSRM who has a sweet old school collection and makes awesome batreps), I am a fan of the newer sculpts, generally.

The children of the Omnissiah can be Repaired or Reborn. Not Replaced.

My machines either get repaired with a bit of glue and elbow grease or are rebuilt into greater things (example, a minotaur conversion from a T-34 tank rebuilt into a Malcador Infernus), But never replaced. More machines are added but that's all.

Played since late RT. Ive only replaced two terminator squads and a Chaplain on bike. They were all old metal versions from second ed that no longer really worked. Theres just such a huge difference between the old and new loyalist terminators. Other than that? Never. Even still using second edition metal chaos termies.

Edit: I just googled ablutions and apparently it does not including dropping a duece. I should have looked it up early sorry for any confusion. - Baldsmug

This. One thousand times this.

New models do not REPLACE older ones, they are an addition.
Though I stopped playing 40k several years ago. I still get the odd model, but they aren't needed for play anymore.

I've swapped out some of my tacticals and sternguard with the newer kits since they are a bit more detailed and dynamic. I'll probably get a box of the plastic mark four armor and switch some of them into my squads soon.

Just because GW's design aesthetics have moved on doesn't mean the old models have lost any usefulness, regardless what they'd LIKE you to think.

What if we like the look of the new ones better?

There's a guy here that will break out his all metal IG blob army from time to time. It takes a hellish amount of time for him to setup and play his turns out, so not even he likes playing with it very much. He's always hunting more of them, just to do it.

I've only had 2 models beyond repair, one I broke myself and am loath to discard as he was the leader of my glorious demolition veteran squad, the other I got off ebay as a chunk of fused plastic as part of a job lot. The latter is the only one that went in the bin.

Some people find the idea that other people can be happy offensive, and will prefer causing harm to self improvement.

Depends.

If I like the newer models when they become available, I will happily replace my Battle Sisters with plastic ones. I prefer working with plastic and the opportunity to create furry/scaly Sororitas is too good to pass up.

But that presupposes the concept of GETTING newer models...

Oozing Plague Marine Terminator

When I heard plastic plaguebearers and Finecast are coming, I immediately bought the metal versions that were still available. I'd never throw away old models, on the contrary, I'm searching through ebay for older versions to increase diversity in the army.
Once GW puts out new plague marines, one box will find it's way into my army, but it would never replace anything.

Why replace old models.

You can have the update and the original.
Gives a more interesting army if your able to mix in old and new models in the force. Say some old beakies and such in the tac sqauds, etc.

Zero chance, unless. I acquire new said model. The older one becomes sad. I may trade him so he can fight again. The only likely scenario. Otherwise, more is better.

I have all versions of the Great Unclean One including FWs. RT one is a herald, GW one is a prince, FW one is a GUO.

I do not replace my older models, they just get added to the collection and allow to see the evolution of both my army and painting skills.

P.S: i have a Nid friend who ows pretty much all version of Termagants, Genestealer patriach (minus throne) and hybrids since their original inception. Quite amusing to see the evolution of all those minis.

There's more, I could go on for some time here. I have a problem, I'm a hoarder...I hoard models.

Seriously though, the answer would have to be no. I've always been of the mind that an army is never really finished, which is probably why I have so many commissars for my IG army. To my mind one should be able to look back over ones army and see how it's developed over the years. I just wish I'd had the money buy more models at retail price when they were released, rather than having to buy them for higher prices on eBay now. There's a particular commissar that has eluded me for some time now...the internet taunts me with it's limited availability.

As a new player, I actually go back and buy old models off eBay. While a majority of my Ork army is new stuff, I grabbed 30 of the older gretchin and 2 warbosses from Black Reach. I actually prefer the Black Reach warboss to the new one.

I also found a 2nd Ed Leman Russ tank, Razorback, Whirlwind, and another tank at a flea market for $20. All old sculpts, but still compliment my DA's well enough. I wouldn't ever replace my current ones with new sculpts, just add on.

I have no quibbles with that and I wouldn't blame anyone else for swapping out - But for me, I'd field my new Warriors before the old, but if I need enough of them, the old ones go out there too. The old "ugly" ones just have gone into storage - sometimes revamped into a variant model/unit. I can't think of any models I've gotten ridden of, short of some squats that got donated to me a while back (they were in pretty bad shape anyway, and I had no interest in running or even attempting to find rules for them).

After replacing my Space Marines sergents by converted Prodos Space Crusaders

I found on E-Bay an 2nd hand Space Crusade missing 75% of its minis.
After completion with W40K one

my goal is now to fully replace all minis with alternative sexy female miniature
here is how it becomes and I find this eye candy & fan service version much more pleasant to play

As they had only 4 bolters & a missile launcher chaos marines have all been replaced by maras sluts

For the imperial ladies, I still need to perform conversion for the heavy weapon.

Just as Chaos Marines salvage and repair parts of their power-armour, so my forces grow. Years of abomination and untamed growth have led to the forces I now own - many of the models salvaged from ebay (and I literally mean salvaged, I enjoy taking seriously damaged models and repairing / kit-bashing until they look new)

I had old metal chaos terminators that got relegated to shelf duty when the new plastic ones came out. Some times the shift from old to new is so big (in this case there is a considerable size difference between the two) that I feel obligated to get the new kit. I also like the looks of the new kit, sadly the weapon options in it were a ripoff for a WYSIWYG player like me.
