So, I've been working on assembling my space marine devastators and with their huge weapons, I feel like they would look more proportional if they were mounted on 40mm bases instead of standard 20mm. I know from a rules standpoint, it is okay to base models on larger bases, just not smaller. Has anyone else put their devs on big bases? How did it work out for you? Did it look goo? Did it impact how well you could maneuver them on the tabletop?

I wouldn't mind if you did this myself, but the rules now say the base they came with, not original or larger (this was like this in 4th from what I've read, though)

The rules state that they must be mounted on the base that they came from, but I really wouldn't see a problem with mounting them on 40mm bases. In fact, that gives you a disadvantage, as bigger bases increases the chance of being hit by a blast.

The Nob of my 'Ard Boyz is on a larger base, thats purly because he was originally top heavy and required a larger base to keep him upright. I wouldn;t have a problem with it personally, but the Games Workshop guys can be more strict than what it's worth, so I wouldn't put it past them to make a fuss.

While a larger base might increase the odds that one of your models gets hit with a blast, it will decrease the chances that MULTIPLE models get hit.

Best bet is to just use the bases they came with. Your buddies might not mind 40mm bases but, if you meet a new group of people or go to a tourney, they're going to look at the larger bases with suspicion, and ask where the 25mm bases are.

Well you could mount it on the 25mm...and mount that onto the 40mm base.

Depends what weps your putting on them... And to be honest I don't know what the fuss is about the size of the base, the rules that have always been for my gw is the required base size or larger (bur not stupid large, eg Titan base-An incident, can't really explain it)

Just got back to wh40k =D

Yea, all my nobz are on 40mm bases. And not ONE person has ever given me greif. Usually I get "Wow! Why don't Nobz come on 40mm bases!" So yea, do whatever you want imo.

Inside a pretty, pretty pain cave... won't you come inside?

You need to use the right sized base, however inconvenient. Otherwise, I'm putting Ghazghkull on a manhole cover and charging the length of the table on turn 1.

That's not actually the rule in the current edition.

Most people don't have a problem with characters on bigger bases than they come with, but doing it for entire squads will possibly raise some eyebrows, as it does give you the benefit of an enlarged coherency area, making them less susceptible to blasts and templates, and able to spread out more to find those perfect LOS vantage points.

So if you were going to do it, I would recommend either using a 25mm base on top of a 40mm, or inscribe a 25mm circle on the 40mm base, and using the 25mm for all measurement... effectively just treating the 40mm base as a display base that has no effect on the game.

Er... Enlarging the base doesn't actually let you move further...

Stic them on any base you want but not a smaller one then 25mm, if you can find a smaller one that is. Who cares if it's on a larger base? If anyone says anything just tell them to get a life and remember it's a recreational GAME.

@ madman49

Why do titans even NEED bases? It just seems unnecessary with something that size.

Hmm... 30mm might do the trick. Missile launchers seem to look fine on small bases and I already have a ton of those. But the lascannon, heavy bolter, and plasma cannons to me are just asking for a larger base.

Another vote for 30mm. GW does not produce its bases in 30mm, but you can get similar style bases on 30mm from Heresy Miniatures, for example. I use said 30mm bases for Ork Nobs and Lootas and Eldar Phoenix Lords. The bases are about half a millimetre thinner than GW bases, but once flocked and painted you can't really tell the difference.

Heresy also sells 50mm bases which one could find use for in 40k. I am thinking of objective markers, Eldar Support weapons and maybe even Killa Kans here.

That place is the harsh dark future far left with only war left.

Awesome! Thank you for the feedback, guys! I think I will give the 30mm a shot and I like the 50mm idea for objectives. Does anyone know of a good supplier of 30mm bases in the US?

UPDATE!

I found a supplier of 30mm round bases in the US: FRP Games has them (as well as Vallejo paints, which my FLGS doesn't carry). I bought a set of 15 of these:

Here are the pics comparing 25mm, 30mm, and 40mm bases for a devastator and my librarian. I think the 30mm helps keep the base from feeling cramped without being as huge as the 40mm.

Everywhere I'm not supposed to be.

I'd go with the 30mm. The 40 kinda seems like he's just standing there all by his lonesome, while the 30 gives a little space to avoid looking cramped up but doesn't leave that much of a larger footprint. And I don't think anyone will notice off the bat.

If you need me, I'll be busy wiping the layers of dust off my dice.

Yeah I agree 100%. It is big enough to keep it from looking cramped, but not big enough to have any meaningful effect on the gameplay.

I must get some of those - I have been wanting to do some masters for resin bases with cobbles, setts & paving for some WW2 models but always find resin bases done by others tend to have a really small area left to put the model on. These should give me the extra room to make decent results.

Great find - thanks!

I mount my stealth suits on 40mm bases and a few people have mentioned it. I think they are "supposed" to be on 25mm bases, but I simply used what came in my battleforce when I got them. There was 1 model in the battle force (the XV8) that was supposed to be on 40mm base, but it came with several 40mms and too few 25mm for that to be an option. I figured that they go onto the 40mm, and I'm consoled by the fact that I've seen 40mm on the stealth suits in yakface's adepticon team army. I find it odd that the small box has the 25mm and the battleforce has 40mm.
