Dante is washed, the gold doesnt photograph very well. The Termi chaplin isnt, as I wasnt sure how to wash black
Vault Boy is a keychain. I took out the screw and greenstuffed the hole (that sounded dirty). Slag (the Autobot) is an OLD eraser from when G2 came out. He is still very bendy.

OH-I Wanna get out of here

Quick update: I got 1 1/2 Assault Marines mostly done. The 1/2 is because I forgot to prime the jump pack, so one is missing. That and a bit more touch up and they are good to go. OH and basing, but Ive been waiting to do a few dozen at a time so they look the same. They were going to be Dark Angels, but I never use them in that army and do in BA, so they got red. The DA pad came out pretty good in BA colors
Also decided my camera sucks, as the pics dont really look like they do in person, but im not buying a new one so I'll have to live with it

Hey Whalemusic!!!

Welcome to the show! Now that you've got your own P&M blog you can....

1. Post your progress.
2. Get great advice on improving your models and skills from lots of great people.
3. Feel like you need to act on that advice and "fix" your figures (this is a good thing)
4. Post pictures of the fixed models so people don't think you're blowing them off and quit giving you advice.
5. Feel guilty whenever you do anything that is NOT working on your minis because your readers haven't seen anything new in a while.
6. Go back to working on your minis.

Did I leave anything out??

Oh yes... actually having the time to play the game and having a life... I did leave those out.

...

Love the combi-plasma... is that in the fig or did you do that?

You might try altering your black just a bit so it's not quite pure black, then you can hit it with Badab Black for those deep tones & give it some dimension. There's a cool P&M featuring some "black orks" (40k orks in black armor) and his "black" is excellent. It's mixed with just a bit of blue to bring the tone down a bit... but it's still black by any estimation. You could wash over that and then get the depth you want out of the paint job. Unfortunately I can't find it at the moment... but it was a mix of black and just enough medium blue to pull the shade down a couple of notches but still be within the realm of "black".

The way I do my shading (which you've seen and commented on plenty) is fairly simple..

base color
wash
base color again on the interior of the plates
Progressive shades up on progressively smaller sections of the plates
very light edging on the sun-ward parts (if you want)

You don't need to do too many "shades up" beyond the base, you just want to set a good contrast between the washed base around the edges of the plate on the center of the plates... so they "pop" a bit.

If you're going to go this route, thin your paints.

You might also experiment with washes until you find the one (or a combination) that work best. Red, Sepia, Delvan Mud & Thraka Green are all viable options for red.

On the Red I use 1-2 coats of Baal Red, and on the Gold I use 2 coats of Sepia.
I did actually get some painting done tonite, but it was just some gold on 2 sang guard. I'll post pics tomorrow.

I've got some Death Company to do, they can be after the Sang Guard. I'll try some different blacks, see if I can find a more defined one. The main reason I have yet to try is that I like my black armor to be black. I HATE the Eavy Metal models that are really dark blue.

I'll keep looking for that blog I lost... his armor was black, not blue... but there was just enough blue in it to make it slightly off-black... dunno, but I don't know how to do anything shading or otherwise to pure black. Even highlights can be tricky.

Got a bit more color on the sang guard, but nothing photo worthy. I got a bit distraced by Transformers: War for Cybertron. I've got a wedding I'm in this weekend, but after that I should have more project time.

with the Terminator Chaplain, use a Devlan mud wash on all the gold, bone, and parchment. It works like a charm.

Here's the blog with the orks w/ black armor... I'm not sure I like his blue highlights... but the black itself is very good.

Not liking the blue highlights, but the matte black is cool. I think Ill try some greys.

Alrighty, picture time.
This guy has the Company Champion Body. I also put the wings further up on him so they could have a more extreme angle.

The Standard came out ok, but it was a huge pain in the ass, so thats as good as its getting.

This is the first sterguard I converted. I have the 5 metal ones, but wanted 10. Basing provided by AoBR and the sword is the company champions. The backpack is from Cypher.

And lastly for tonite, I got a marine today from Porkuslime for a project hes doing. Got rid of all the blood droplet traces, he will be a blood drinker when finished, with lots of challaces.

OK, I like those a lot. As always your figure constructions skills are excellent, and the paint jobs on these seem much more delicate that the last ones & let the detail show through better. Good job.

Not sure how you did your gold, but it might benefit from a little additional contrast. You might consider adding some mithril silver to whatever your gold is and adding some highlights to crank up the volume a little bit. Really dynamic poses though.... makes the figures.

Lots of TF fan/40k player crossover it seems. I once walked into my local GW wearing the same Autobot shirt as one of the staff who was "off-duty". >_>; Particularly loving the GKT-turned Terminator Librarian, and the plastic Sternies.

Always cool to see all the TF fans on this board, but I rarely see 40k fans on the TF boards, which is odd. The GKT is actually Belial, I wanted something different from everyone else.

My gold is actually all drybrushed Burnished gold, Shining gold, Mithril Silver, more Burnished gold, more Shining gold, and Serphia wash a few times. My photo skills suck, but they have quite a bit of depth to them.

So it's been hot as hades here, and we dont have air conditioning, so I've been to damn hot to do much painting. That being said I do have a bit I got done over the weekend.
The drop pod is mostly done, still needs detailing though, so keep that in mind. It's for my Sterguard, so I gave it a bit of gold up top. And no, I dont have any of them painted yet. Or even put together really......

The only other thing I've got around to was a bit of....well......something

My brother and I were thinking, and we decided there had to be something we could do with all these sprues. So we figured why not make a new army out of em. I introduce the first Hormasprue. Tecnically they will even be Tourny legal as they are 100% GW product. They only real problem is that I will run out of bases, so if anyone knows a super cheap spot to get some (of all sizes) please let me know. The other problem is I dont know which name to give em, Spruenids or Tyrasprues.

What color did you prime the drop pods with? Painting over black with red is a real b-*%ch. I'd recommend a white primer... really cranks up the volume of the red and makes it a 1-and-done paint job for your base color. You can always tone it down afterwards with a wash if you want.

I definitely love the sprue army idea... spruanids are my name of choice.

Yeah, I primed it black. Havent been able to find a white that I like. My last 2 cans of GWs sucked big time, came out super chalky or had to waste half a can to get it smooth. Anyone got some good, not super expensive alternatives?
