SL,UT

just wanted to post the rules to an escalation league we came up with that essentially (and some other factors) saved our FLGS from having to close down. this brought all kinds of people out and got tons of games played at the shop and tons of new armies started. 7-8 locals and shop employees came up with this over the course of a couple weeks and it has been freakin amazing. the game totally plays differently at the lower point levels and you can crank out a game in 45 minutes (or even less sometimes!), letting you get a ton of games in over a relatively short period of time. it uses a lot of ideas from the old 40k in 40 minutes and the kill team stuff, but it is generic enough that people could figure it out quickly and build lists in no time at all. my favorite part was that it made some units that are normally considered trash (stealth suits, whirlwinds, etc) actually playable.

if you want to create a sweet 40k community, i wholeheartedly recommend doing something like this. anyways...on to the rules!

Phase one:

* Chose an army. Start a new one, dust off an old completed army you haven’t played in a while, or use this as an excuse to get some paint on an army that you’ve been using but have never finished painting. Start with 500 points under the restrictions listed below.
* Every month, within the changing restrictions, add 250 points to your army point total.
* After the first 3 months, a faction team (see below) will be declared the winner, and the scores will reset for the next three months. In addition, to celebrate the completion of the first phase there will be an Apocalypse “bring and battle” game.

Phase two:

* We will continue where we left off, with 1250 points, 1500 points, 1750 points and finally ending with 2000 points and another, even bigger Apocalypse game.

As far as the actual campaign goes, here are some particulars:

* Free! There are no entry fees, just come in and get games. Any day of the week is fine, but Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday will be official league days, with Monday set aside as a painting day- get your troops ready for the coming week of battles!
* You must still abide by your Codex! Unless these rules specifically override your Codex, your still have to abide by all of the special rules that your Codex contains.
* There will be 4 faction teams:
o Kinda evil: Imperial, including all loyal Space Marines, Imperial Guard, Sisters of Battle, Daemon hunters
o Well, they’re not really evil: Eldar, Tau
o Yeah they’re evil: Chaos, Chaos Daemons, Necrons, Dark Eldar
o They just want to eat everything: Tyranids, Orks
* At any time, you can challenge someone to a campaign game. For it to count towards the campaign, the point value must be no greater than the current escalation level.
* Games will be randomly generated from the book scenarios, i.e. dice off for deployment, scenario, etc. If you agree with your opponent, you can alternatively do whatever you decide, but preferably just keep it random.
* Set up terrain in whatever way you and your opponent agree upon.
* Playing will score points for your team- 10 for a win, 6 for a draw, 2 for a loss.
* As we escalate, you can still play games at the lower points level, but for every level below the current level, subtract 2 from your earned points, to a minimum of 1. i.e. if we are at the 750 level and you are playing a 500 point game, you can only earn 8 for a win, 4 for a draw, 1 for a loss.
* After you play your game, report the results. Making sure to mention if your opponent was different from those already recorded, to whoever is running the store at the time.
* At the end of each escalation level, whoever has played the most games against different opponents will win a prize. If you are tied with another player, you will both win something.
* At the end of the first three months (1000 points- phase one) one faction team will be declared the winner and will get all of the glory (for now). Then the faction points will reset for the next three months. Whichever team has the most points after this will be declared the winner of phase two. It is important to remember that it is the 40K factions that form teams, not actual players, you might well wish to play several different factions and thus garner points for several different teams. This is fine, play as many different games as you can get in.

500 points…the beginning

Change the Force Organization Chart (FOC) thusly:

* You can have 2 Troops choices.
* You can have 1 unit from HQ, Elites, Fast Attack and Heavy Support.
* As compulsory choices, you must have either 1 HQ and 1 Troops choice OR 2 Troops choices.
* You can have no more than 2 vehicles.
* Neither of those vehicles can have more than 33 total armor value (AV) i.e. a Rhino has 11 front, 11 side and 10 rear, total AV 32. A Predator has 13 front, 11 side, 10 rear, total AV 34- not allowed.
* No models of any type except swarms may have more than 2 wounds total. Yes, this means some factions may not be able to run HQ choices at this level.
* No special characters.

750 points…this could turn into something bigger!

Same as 500 points, with the following changes:

* Add 1 Troops slot to your FOC.
* Your choice- Add 1 of the following to your FOC: Elite, Fast Attack, or Heavy Support.
* You can now have up to 3 vehicles, maximum AV no greater than 34.
* No models may have more than 3 wounds.
* You cannot have any duplicate units with the exception of Troops- this includes dedicated transports i.e. you can have 2 Tactical squads in Rhinos, but you cannot have 2 Dreadnoughts, even 1 from Elite and 1 from Fast Attack.

1000 points…okay, it’s for real now!

Same as 750 points, with the following changes:

* Add 1 Troops slot to your FOC.
* You must run an HQ and at least two troop choices.
* Your choice- Add 1 of the following to your FOC: Elite, Fast Attack, Heavy Support. However you may not have all three of one choice yet.
* You can now duplicate a non-Troops unit 1 time- i.e. you can have 2 Predators or 2 Terminator squads.
* There are no wound restrictions.
* Special characters ARE allowed.
* You can now have 4 vehicles, maximum AV no greater than 38.
* Squadrons with AV >32 are limited to 1 vehicle.

1250…we are committed now!

Same as 1000, with the following changes:

* Add 1 Troops slot to your FOC.
* Your choice- Add 1 of the following to your FOC: Elite, Fast Attack, Heavy Support. However you may not have all three of one choice yet.
* You can now have 5 vehicles, maximum AV no greater than 38.
* Squadrons with AV >32 are still limited to 1 vehicle.

1500…have we won yet?

Same as 1250, with the following changes:

* Add the final Troops slot to your FOC.
* Add the final HQ slot to your FOC.
* You can now have 6 vehicles with no AV restrictions.
* Squadrons with AV >32 are limited to 2 vehicles.
* You may now run two each of Fast Attack, Elite, and Heavy Support.

1750…almost there!

Same as 1500, with the following changes:

* Add the final Elite and Fast Attack slots to your FOC (note you do NOT have 3 Heavy Support slots).
* You can now have 7 vehicles with no AV restrictions.
* You can now duplicate a non-Troops unit 3 times- i.e. you can have 3 Ravener squads or 3 Dreadnoughts.

2000…CONFLAGRATION OF DOOOOOOOOM!

No restrictions, go forth and conquer.
