Dark Angels Librarian with Book of Secrets

I know, I know... Everyone's making one of these...

As a relative newbie to converting minis and painting and such, I chose a bada** looking terminator leader, in this case, Brother-Captain Stern from the Grey Knights. I have attached what I have done so far, but I kinda want to make him a little more Dark Angel-y. I wanted him in black engraved armor to denote the lineage of the Deathwing that he leads, not necessarily pre-Heresy, but at least pre-bone white Deathwing, a relatively "new" color scheme for them (fluff). I ground off the Inquisition logo from his chest and the skull from the shoulder pad book, I have two DA bits from the Veterans sprue to cover them, but one looks a little ridiculously big and would be a little in front of his face.

I'm just looking for some constructive criticism and tips to make him a bit more Deathwing/Dark Angel...

Thanks!

If it were me, I would replace the head and sword - they're instantly recognizable as Stern, at least to me.

I had thought about another sword, but I liked the concept of the two-handed sword being used with the storm bolter glove freeing up his left hand. maybe some creative dremel tooling could modify the sword...

Aha My specialty Dark Angels! Well I've done something relatively close to the model you have "constructed". But what Ive seen on your model is the Heavy power Armour engravings and the head, I saw it is a Grey knights figure straight away and wondered. Is this guy kidding? But obviously your not Indeed its a good attempt with your dark angels leader but It would need something like a hood or you could cover up the engravings with gs or modeling putty. At the moment It looks as though It could count as a dark angels librarian. My termi Librarian Looks relatively Close to that conversion.

But overall you definitely need more touch ups to make him a fighter for the right army or you'll end up have Grey knights against Grey knights one day

Well, I'd make a start but replacing the storm bolter arm with a different one because of the GK chapter symbol, while your at it, replace the head as well. Finish this off with replacing all inquisition/grey knight symbols with DA ones and I'd personally remove te physic hood.

It's a hard model to convert but it'll look great when done.

whoa, are you guys related?! just a fluff note, technically the sword belial (and sammael and azrael) uses is supposed to be jet black as it's made from some obsidian asteroid that crashed into the rock. i painted up my belial with the normal power sword colors before noticing that too... you're did a great job with the painting so i figured you might be interested.

Gives a guide in WD 362

Here it is

Step 1: Basecoat with a 1:1 mix of Hawk Turquoise and Space Wolves Grey
Step 2: Blend down to Regal Blue to create the shaded areas, aiming for an alternating pattern.
Step 3: Form a neutral basecoat, blend up to Space Wolves Grey.
Step 4: Continuing to work on the lighter parts of the blade, blend up to a 1:1 mix of Space WolvesGrey and Skull White.
Step 5: Work up to pure Skull White on the light areas. Then add fine diagonal lines of Skull White onto the shaded parts of the blade.

I think that is the Method Zarkin used minus the last step (at this stage).

...urrrr... I dunno

Personally, I'd have modelled him a hood somehow. Dark Angels like their hoods, and this would help you indentify him with the rest of your force. Otherwise, it's a very promising start!

Nah the sword was much simpler. Used three colors all up, Hawk Turk, Skull White and Chaos black. Then just wet blended accordingly.

Pffffft, the only GW tutorial I have ever found useful is the NMM Sanguinor one.

And yeah I was lazy with the conversion, not touching anything. But its just meant for table top, so who the hell is gonna be close enough to see the GK symbols. Oh, and the Book is not a specific GK symbol, check out Sammuel's jetbike...

My first conversion is turning into the job from hell!!! I took many peoples' advice and am in the process of grinding his psychic hood and head off, to replace it with a DA upgrade head. Two lessons learned: grind/cut before painting, and these things get hot really quick under a Dremel grinding!

and a half an hour later, I have carved a hole big enough to fit the hooded DA head onto... now for my buddy help me fill it in with some green stuff and finish painting... again... FML...
