I just recently finished re-doing my first Leman Russ (Attached) and can't seem to figure out how to add extra detail to it other than what it already has.

The basecoat is Gore Red and a mixture of Boltgun Metal with Badab Black/Devlan Mud.

Now the third picture attached is one my artistic friend did, basically redid it in photoshop to show where the detail should be and what it should look like (Wear and Tear, chipped paint, metal scoring, ETC...)

My only problem is I'm not able to discern how to even make these colors, do I mix Gore Red with some Gray/White to get a lighter shade and paint that around the edges?

Do I use some type of blue and gray and mix them together to paint over to give the affect of chipped paint?

I have pretty much every paint from Citadel and the washes along with the brushes, so I'm not lacking tools at this point - just talent I suppose.

Any point(s) in the right direction would be greatly appreciated

One thing you could do to add detail to it is name it on the side of your turret it will go a long way also that bottom picture is right on with what a tank needs. As for how to do this I can't say I'm not the best of painters.

Moar heraldry. A good ol' name and number, possibly some variant pattern (like red and white stripes) and score marks would go a long way (like a picture of a tau piranha to show that it's killed one, or possibly more)

Oh, and battle damage, for sure. Little chips in the paint job, rust, dust, dirt, whatever.

You said you've got washes so you have a good start. If you are worried about using them then just mess around on the underside.

I'd get a black/blue or black/brown wash going and liberally chuck it at the tank. Washes are much more notable when wet so make sure to let what you have done dry before you decide if its enough.

Then, some more dry brushing which it looks like you may have already started on. Something like Deneb Stone can be good for dirt. Brush fairly heavily along the bottom parts, lightly as you move towards the top of the tank. Then, plain ol' chaos black around the end on the gun barrel and the exhausts for some sooting up.

Hope that gives you some ideas to work on. I've got some examples of what I did to try and save and massively over sprayed russ on my blog if its any use.
