So my question is as an IG player it makes sense that I will be buying a lot of armor in the near future. How does the book "How To Paint Citadel Tanks" hold up for its price? At $29 USD it isn't so bad but if it's just going to be a model catalouge with unrealistic painting and minimal instruction then I'm going to pass. Unfortunatly I am not in an area where I can preview this item before purchase:( .

If you want to have a ready hard copy around go ahead, but there is a wealth of information on how to paint the Warhammer figure here and on other sites as well. Just google around and enjoy yourself

Probably contrary to what people will tell you, go buy it. It's a pretty good way to get you started, and it's nice to look at inspiration. A citadel spray gun would be good too (I hate it, but you might have better luck ^.^)

You can buy the book because there is some good tips in it. However, here is my method for simple and easy IG armor painting is Krylon Camo Green spray paint. It is a near match for GW Catchan Green. Quick spray, detail painting and you are done.

Here is some IG armor I painted up with this method.

You can see on the sponson weapons where there is green on the weapons, that is GW Catachan Green. the rest of the green camo is just the base coat of Krylon Camo Green Spray Paint.

I have both books. The GW book is terrific for beginner to moderately high level painters. It has some great how-to's for paint schemes and weathering effects, as well as modeling advice for damage and extra detailing. I consider myself to be a pretty good painter, and I learned several new things.

The Forgeworld book goes far beyond the GW book. It's definitely a masterclass level of information, with oil washes, weathering powders, super detailing, diorama work and more. I used to run clean painted tanks and vehicles, now I'm grunging them up to match my infantry.

If more of us valued food and cheer and 40K over hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.

@ Temujin: I'll book mark that for later.

As for everyone else, thank you for your opinions and suggestions. I have so far recieved most of my painting and modeling advice from Dakka which is why I came here for the review of this book, I think I will be ordering it with my next batch of stuff.

Also, there's the option of downloading it off the interwebz, which I did today. I have the PDF if you want it

All Samus was saying is that sites like http://scribd.com have tons of documentation available on them; anyone with a keyboard can search for documents etc. Generally scribd is pretty good about pulling down copyright protected work, but there IS such a thing as fair use. Take for example my posting up of the answer to his question here:

http://www.scribd.com/doc/34200190/Modelling-Tank-Camo

It's a really decent overview of 40K camo patterns that was posted on the GW site some years ago. But they redesigned their site, and the information would have been lost if I hadn't saved it and reposted. Is this in violation of copyright? Maybe in a super strict sense, but it does nothing to devalue any product as this information was originally free!

If this is going to put me under review or something, just delete this post instead. I'm just trying to be helpful, but don't wanna get MOD'd. lol The mods here are pretty fantastic though, so if there IS a problem with reposting FREE information, please just edit my post instead of banning me or something.

Paperhammer40K FTW!

I agree with most of the people on here that the book is not worth the money. Spray paint and a cheap airbrush will do fine. If you want to do some sort of camo pattern, spray it the base color that you want the camo stripes to be, then stick silly putty on the areas that you want to retain that color. Finally spray it over with the final color that you want the majority of the tank to be, and voila', camo stripey pattern!
