Towering Hierophant Bio-Titan
|
In the halflight of the sporechoked planetmoon of Ultramar the marine spearhead cautiously pushed forward.
For days the atmosphere of the moon had been growing darker by the hour, the initial tyranid spore seeding of the planet getting visibly more souplike and turgid.
From orbit the darkness was seen spreading from a dozen or more of these infestation points as the seeding began to take hold.
Tactical squads Xerses and Finbar had been rallied and the Thunderhawk had dropped them, and a number of supporting squads, approximately 7 spaceclicks from the source of one of these rapidly growing pockmarks. Their mission was to investigate the source of this abomination unto mankind and neutralise The Threat.
Looked like it was time to save the day!
His list
On the table:
Tactical squad Xerses: Heavy bolter
Comat squad Finbar: Rocket Launcher
6 man Dev Squad: 4 Rocket Launchers
6 Scouts: Snipers, Rocket Launcher
5 Terminators: Cyclone
Dread: Assault Cannon
Randy’s trademark Whirlwind
Reserves:
Captain Ivor Biggun: Relic Blade
Combat Squad Finbar
8 Assault Marines: Jet packs, Powerfist, Flamer
Land Speeder: HB, HF
Razorback: HB(Contains Combat Squad Finbar and Captain Ivor)
My List
On the Table:
Winged Tyrant, Dr Love
12 Stealers
6 Warriors: Rending Claws
2 Zoanthropes, Slishy and Squishy
3 Fexes, Face, Hannibal, Murdoch: Crushing Claws
Reserves:
Trygon Megasnake: Toxin Sacks
Mission: Bases, Mycetic Spore in each tablequater, with Spearhead Deployment
LEEEEEEEEEEEETS GET READY TOOOOOOO RUUUUUUUMMMMMMMBBBBBBLLLLLLLEEEEEEE!!!!!!!
Randy set up and went first as I failed to ‘Seize the cheese’
Turn 1:
Marines don’t move. A few wounds are caused on the 3 Fexes by a combination of the Dev and Sniper squads and any other missile launchers.
The stealers get pied by the whirlwind and they lose a couple.
Tyranids rumble forwards, most of my run moves are sixes. I begin to brag about how fantastic I am at this game and Randy seems very very scared.
Turn 2:
More of the same, the marines hold their ground and send more rockets and sniper fire in the direction of such impressive beasts. A couple more wounds ping into the fexes and a few more stealers carp it to the Whirlie.
Winged Tyrant and warriors begin to skirt around the flank and the Carnifaeces push up the middle acting as a screen fot the Stealers and Slishy and Squishy.
Progress is somewhat slower this time as Randy confiscates my lucky dice.
I must remember to write to GW and get an exact ruling on that, not completely sure that he is allowed to do that.
Turn 3:
Reserves arrive. Like a lightning bolt full of blue greasy lightning the Landspeeder and Assault Squad arrive. Fire is directed at the Hive Tyrant and the Assault marines assault it.
The fabulous winged doctor gets a chance to use his magnificent medically sharp talons, and dispatches a handful of marines but takes a number of wounds.
More fire is directed at the Fexes who finally cave into the tickling sensations caused by the constant battery. Teary eyed and achy limbed they decide to lie down, that’s more than enough excitement for one day. I hate it when a plan doesn’t come together.
The ground shakes, tension builds. Between the rumblings the only noise is the whirring of the marines’ space catheter pumps emptying their space trousers.
‘TRYGON MEGASNAKE!’, squeaked a very scared looking marine captain.
‘Bonjour!’
The remaining Stealers push forward and the Warriors race to relieve the Dr from his combat.
The Dr dispatches a few more marines and receives a wound.
Turn 4:
Things start to get a bit worse for me from here on in.
Reserves arrive in the form of Randy’s razorback.
The doctor is finally overwhelmed with boredom and flies home to see his parents.
The Trygon gets hammered with fire from every angle and slopes off leaving nothing but a big hole.
My Warriors get a flaming from the landspeeder.
The final Stealers are gunned down.
All that remains now are my Zoanthropes and the Warriors.
My turn consists of the Warriors exacting their revenge and pulling down the Landspeeder and a pretty ineffectual Warp Blast from the Zoanthropes.
Turn 5:
Combat Squad Finbar and Captain Ivor dismount from their Razorback and destroy most of the remaining Warriors with bolterfire.
Ivor's shining relicblade goes snickersnack and finishes off the remainder.
Randy’s super powerfist Sergeant (the one that killed the Doctor) charges the Zoanthropes but fails to kill them. All that remained now two or three more rounds of this combat which ended in a double fisting to the brains of both monsters.
The marines are victorious for now but The Threat grows stronger every day. Can the marines save the planet? Will Sergeant Fisty be able to repeat such amazing feats in the future? Surely the Megasnake is dead, nothing could survive that, could it? And most importantly, When will we next meet the Doctor?
Tune in next time!
Thanks for the game Randy and thanks for reading. This is my first batrep so be gentle. All C+C taken on board.
Cheers, Alex.

I love the smell of burning Tyranid magasnake in the morning.
Nice one dude!
I was going to write this up!
It was a very enjayable game played in a nice friendly atmos.
You should point out it was the first time you had used the new codex and your list was for a laugh as opposed to any attempt at a superevilgenius list.
We played at Alex's shop, Cut & Thrust, I would heartily recommend popping in if your you are in the Bristol area, you can check out the other 8.5K ish of painted nids Alex has lying around.
Hope fully next week MGS Orks vs Alex's CSM!

Kudos to each of you for very nicely painted armies! I'm somewhat new to the hobby and perhaps dont have the practiced eye of an old-timer, but I wanted to specifically mention...
...I've always disliked the brighter "royal" Ultramarine blue. From your pics, it appears the SM player has gone a darker shade, very nicely complemented by his whites and metals over dark shading. The first time I've looked at Ultramarines and thought it looked fantastic.
...I've always thought the Tyranids were a generally "ugly" army. I've just never liked the Aliens meets Jurassic Park look for the models. Your pic of the Trygon hovering over the Ultramarine squad is quite possibly the nicest Tyranid pic I've seen, and I really like the colors and shades you selected. The first time I've looked at a Tyranid army and thought it looked really top notch.

Wait, so why did the marines win?
In any case, nicely painted armies and terrain for the win.
MeanGreenStompa wrote:Shrewd dakkites can observe my cameo appearance, with mug of coffee, in the background.
My thought when I saw that was:
you: what's blue, white, and dead all over?
him: look, just shut up.
Of course, I was expecting the nid player to win, so the caption is less appropriate...

@1500 pts 3 carnifexes is overkill. They are great for higher point games when you need to throw in a point sink or two but @ anything under 2k you're better off throwing in more bodies (termagants, hormagants, etc).
Should've infiltrated the genestealers, getting cover saves from terrain rather than screening behind other units. **edit** Outflanking them would also have been a good option, considering the spearhead deployment. *end edit* The trygon should've been running up along with the fexes and the tyrant. Then the missile launchers would have had more trouble picking their targets, since the 'stealers would have been so very close but the monstrous creatures needed the high-strength shots to bring 'em down.
Quality of the report was top-notch. Better luck to the 'nids next time!

Nicly painted armies and a great batrep to boot!
I particularly like the Tyranid scheme, very nice!
I only have one question, how did you place a combat squad in reserve?
You can only place units in resreve instead of deploying them and you can only split tac squads into combat squads when they are deployed.
In other words, you can't split a tac squad into combat squads and place 1 combat squad in reserve.
You can place the entire 10 man tac squad in reserve, and split them when they deploy.
Or you can deploy the tac squad at the start of the game and split them into squads.
Only flaw I saw in a great batrep. Looking forward to seeing more.

Joyful McJoy gents. I definitely think you should do a batrep with MGS this thursday Alex, I'll not be down until after 7 so will try and either squeeze a 500pt game in with one of you after, or just play some Necro with my Kung-Fu Monks.

I never interpreted the rules that way myself, not saying your wrong however, I saw it that I split as delployed still, I placed the rocket squad on the table and split off the flamer unit and placed in reserve, I don't see it that the whole unit is put on table and then split up. Maybe one for YMDC.
I don't think it critically affected this game however.
See you on thurs Rodders
