Hi This is my first attempt at painting orks. I purchased a black reach set for my younger son and since he is only 6, I am doing his orks for him. I know there are some problems:
a) I am a newbie to taking pictures of these things
b) Mold lines should be removed
c) Guns should be drilled better

I would like any other comments you guys have so I can learn more.

thanks

kalias

I agree. Nice, clean, but dirty. The way Orks should be. I know you didn't do the sculpts, but I'm still impressed by the Ork contents of that box set.

I learned a lot of stuff painting these. The first thing was that if it starts looking good it is hard to put the paint brush down, all you want to do it paint!
Painting the cloth on the warboss was an education in getting paint depth. I started off with mechrite red as a base, then blood red and fiery orange as
highlights. Once those were complete I used a baal red wash to sort of blend things. The final bit was devlan mud to make it look dirty.

The other thing that I found neat was painting their skin. The effect I got was not exactly what I wanted but it turned out not bad. Here I was trying to
think in reverse trying to get as much detail out of the arm muscles that I could. Starting dark and going lighter really worked. It was also cool to see that
you can use bright colors and then dull them done with a wash if need be. This can hide all sorts or little errors when you are learning.

The helicopter was another learning tool. You can't see it in the pictures but I actually highlighted his jacket, teeth and everything. Maybe a little too anal
but it was a lot of fun The picky details sure slows the painting down. Hopefully it will pay off in the end.

I have made a mistake though, I added the flock to the base before I gave them a clear coat. I am not sure what the clear coat stuff will do to the grass.

The good thing about orks is that they should all look different. This gives you a lot of room to "adjust" each ork as you go, giving them character. This is
where space marines kill me. As much as I think that they are really cool, making them all look the same might get a little boring. I need to find a way
to get around this so that I don't find painting them too dull.

Since you're using the block painting style, covered by what looks like a varnish/wash such as army painter medium tone, I suggest trying a light highlight drybrusing layer to the entire model using either a white or a gray color before applying the varnish next round. Just do some of the set this way; you don't want all your orcs looking exactly the same. Another trick is to paint the skins using 3 or 4 variants of green, from snot green, goblin green to mint green before applying the varnish.

My 9 year olds orks came out like this, using that simple block painting technique:

What is a block painting style? Does that mean doing things in batches?

you are well on your way m8, all i can say is that just render them and then redner them some more. that is the only way to get a grip and learn how to bend the color. im doing a big paint jobb now on my tyranids and for every new modell i put out it get better.

one inportant thing to keep in mind is where is the lhigt coming from? i ask that question to my self all the time be for i start a paint jobb. if you know where all your shadows ans high lights are the end will be a lot better.

best of luck to you man, and keep it up !!!!

OH GOD OH GOD, Do NOT varnish it with the static grass on the base. It'll RUIN THE MODEL, DON'T DO IT. The aerosol from the varnish sprays the static grass all over the model, and it gets stuck in the grass as well, creating a "dew" effect.

Okay, no varnish it is! The kids are already playing with them so it is not that important.

Thanks for the tips, it is great to have a community that provides feedback. I can learn all sorts here
