Hey everybody i am only new to warhammer and i have chosen the noble Adeptus Astartes as my pick for my first army. i liked all the chapters that gw support but i wanted to make something unique, so i fudged together my own chapter and nerded up some fluff to go with it. basically you'll all probly call them salamanders because the paint scheme is basically the same but i think its a different green lol.

anyway back on track.

The chapter that i am doing is going to be similar to the salamanders but only because of the dragon theme. The symbol will be different, Its actually the one posted in the white dwarf a few months ago when they did the article on free handing chapter symbols, but i suck really bad at free hand so i'm gonna try the greenstuff. the feel of the chapter that i am going for is heavily celtic based so i have tried to make it feel that way. Once i get my Hands on some gs i'm gonna try and alter the storm shields of my assualt termies and their weapons to Axes.

Well its great to see the large amount of enthusiastic comments that the pictures i put up got..... ahem. So in spite of this i'm going to just soldier on and keep posting regardless of what nobody said lol

ok so i think that i should get into the fluff of my chapter a little bit more. At this point the Noble Sons of Draconis are going to be Imperial Fists successors this is mostly because i think the crimson fists rule. who needs acid spit and coma implants anyway. so i'm going with a 5th founding chapter making them "old"enough that they arent a newbie chapter out to prove themselves and it can explain any quirks or mutations that i come up with as being a mutation of the geneseed over time.

Thier homeworld is a small world called Draconis placed in the Segmentusm Ultima near the Gates of Varl their position enables them to respond to calls for aid from the horrors of the maelstrom if required and also to fend off the brutal orcs and Dark Eldar pirates ravaging the trade routes. Draconis is a death world roughly twice the size of Terra with an incredible unstable planetary crust this results in volcanes and lava filled ravines forming and collapsing all the time. the people that inhabit the planet call themselves the Keltoi and live on the platues that are formed by the lava ravines. The scarcity of farmable land gives rise to clan wars and the keltoi are well versed in the art of war. the keltoi people are at an iron age level of technology but have managed to master the art of "flight" their youths are tested for the right to enter the clan through a test of fire. with the aid of crude hand gliders the youths of the tribes are to fly through the ravines and come out the other side using strength, agility and thermal currents to stay alive. this trait is carried over to the Sons of Draconis through a larger that normal use of Jump Pack troop and land speeders.

Like the fluff so far, nice to see it's going to inform your unit selections.

What heavy / special weapons have you thought about restricting yourself to? I remember in 3rd and 4th Edition this was a big part of the chapters, and it's also telling of the lore i.e. the salamanders' use of flamers, meltaguns and thunder hammers.

Captain Klaw: so far the only heavy weapons i have are the free flamers and missile launchers lol i haven't really played that many games yet but i must confess that my main opponent is a buddy of ine that plays nids so i got a land raider redeemer and an iron dread with flamers lol. burn the gribblies!!! My chapter is similar to the salamanders but not exactly the same.

Asherian Command: nope definitely Draconis. i'm thinking of working in a nickname for that chapter into the fluff so i dont have to write Draconis all the time. something like Dragoons lol

So i'm goning to try my hand at some green stuff tomorrow to add my own flourish to my chapter so everyone wish me luck. i'm going to start with the chapter symbol and then try and turn the thunder hammers on my assualt terminator into giant whopping Axes. any one tried something similar and feels like putting in their twio cents please please please feel free cause i need all the help i can get lol

Tips for photos, (I Know you are using a phone... but still the same thing applies in regard to using a timer and lighting and background....) Most phones also have macro modes

Ok so i know that it has been forever since i've posted anything here but i am trying really hard to get restarted on my diy chapter.

So i havent really done much more in the way of modelling recently but i came across a post here in dakka about waterslide decals and making your own. I downloaded the programs from here on dakka, Inkscape and Gimp, but i'm still having a load of troubles. has anyone got any tips to help me figure out how to use these programs? Is one Better than the other?

What i'm trying to do with them is get a template ready for the chapter symbol for my marines. my freehand sux and my GS fuu is pretty terrible as well. the chapter symbol i wanted to look something like my avatar. any tips or help would be really appreciated. Thanks guys

Bell of Lost Souls has some tips on this I believe. With the Greenstuff and Free Hand keep practising you will gradually get better believe me practise helps!

Thanks for the tip llama. I've read the belloflostsouls pdf and it only tells you about applying the decals. I am looking for someone who has had any success using the programs here on dakka to create their own decals

Sorry I've not made decals before. Might I recommend that you make them different to salamanders perhaps by adding a woad like blue to your colour scheme The white/siver clashes heavily. Also you could put blue warpaint on any bare heads to fit into the celtic theme. In addition celtic spirals and knotwork could be cool.

Finally if you're painting a LOT of stuff get a can of 'montana gold' (it's not gold coloured that's just the name) - probably shock green and just spray it.

The terrible nature of the photos so far have made the green kind of boring. When i paint up the green i use goblin green and then do about 4 washes with thraka to bring it up to the color that i want. it shades all the details and junk too so i don't have to lol. I have an assault squad that I'm trying to use the "woad" coloring on. I have painted their helmets black and then put patterns on them in shadow grey. it looks the closest to the woad color that i want. part of the reason for wanting the help on the decals was for the swirls and patterns. the detail necessary is a b**ch
