So long story short. In the Army. Got orders to alaska from Kansas. Wife was 6 months pregnant. On leave seeing family in PA,USA when wife goes into preterm labor and we have our baby girl. Army gives me temporary orders to stay here till baby is well enough to leave Nicu in hospital. Saving money and staying in my aunts cabin in PA. GOING CRAZY!!!! All my minis and paints are in alaska already thanks to the army. So after about 6 weeks in this cabin I broke down and bought some stuff from the local Hobby shop. Dont have a chaos army yet and the models are pretty cool so i bought the THousand Sons box with 9 minis, the citadel foundation set, some brushes, and a few other hobby supplies i already have(GAH!!!). I will probably just sell the minis when the are finished so keep an eye on the swap shop. Still gotta drive to alaska with 2 dogs a wife and now a baby So without further venting i give a look into my cabin fever lol. Will keep this updated once a day. LIke i have anything better to do

Thanks she is doing very well. Elizabeth Paige Reynolds is her name. We drive an hour every day to the hospital and stay for 3-4 hours to feed her and hold her.
Chaos is one of the few armies me and my wife dont have. We dont have Guard, Dark Eldar, Chaos marines and demons and well thats about it we have everything else. At least 3k of every army. 2 marine armies. Wolves and Ultramarines (and enough for a DIY chapter thats in progress). All in Various stages of completed painting and detailing. Recently before i moved i took a break from painting and built a 6x4 gaming table for our gaming room. But there isnt really anything to do in the cabin so this should keep me sane....for now.

Wait, are you priming these models? This looks like you're painting straight on the plastic. This is a serious no-no, and should never be done under any circumstances. Get some black/grey/white spray primer from your local hardware store (depending on your color scheme) and hit them up with a nice, even primer. After, and ONLY after this has been done, should you do anything resembling painting these guys. Paint will not stick to bare plastic very well, and it sure as sugar won't like metal. You'll find your paintjobs chipping and peeling with even marginal use.

Seriously, spring the 5 bucks and get yourself a can of Krylon flat black primer. Your minis will thank you.

For the arms and backpacks i used gesso. Ive read about it a couple times so decided to give it a try. If it doesnt work its as easy as simple green lol. As for the main chunk of the body i have a black primer i will be using. Been painting these for about 8 years. So in no way would i ever think about not priming lol.

Lol.(Queue Motivational speech music) But its good to know that there are some brave men or women out there patrolling the threads preventing what would otherwise be total disasters. I shall rest peacefully tonight knowing the threads are safe and people dont finger paint their minis or try and remove said paint with sizzling bacon grease. No matter how delicious the idea sounds.

Alrighty after re-priming( finished just as is began to pour outside) i began painting again. But only after i relocated my painting area. I went out and bought a full spectrum lamp because the lighting in the cabin is terrible. So here are the updates.

That yellow looks like a real pain to paint over that dark blue. Remember to use lots of thin coats. You don't see enough of these guys and it is a shame.

Yeah its the citadel foundation iyanden darksun. That was just one coat. When I paint i go messy with base colors then get more and more detailed. That base yellow is actually going to be covered with gold. It is a better base for gold than the blue was lol. I just use basic colors to pick out detail so i can paint it better. No worries though itll be better after the second coat and gold tomorrow.

Anyone have any ideas as to what to base these guys with? I was thinking some deserty looking grass or some stone ruins. What do you guys think?

Ah... I see. I have yet to try the foundation paints. They seem like a real time saver. I'll have to try that out next time I paint gold. Anything that speeds me up is great in my book. I think desert style bases would suit these guys with the whole egyptian thing they got going on. Sand and ruins with no grass would be very cool. Like the ground around the crumbling Spynx. Ancient and sandy.

This is a random aside. I have red gore chaos marines with yellow trim and I've found that painting the areas I want yellow with something like space wolves grey makes it easier to get the yellow on there.

I think i will do a deserty theme. Although i hate just plain sand or dirt so ill spice it up. Perhaps some meager looking shrubbery or dead weeds. Some rocks here and there.

If you're just trying to get a good base for metallic gold like shining gold I recommend using Gunmetal then painting over it with gold. It works really well and its easy to do. I use this alot with my orks.

Not to sound cheap or anything but metallics are actually more expensive than regular paints so ive become accustomed to useing a similar non metallic base instead of 2 metallic layers. For shining gold i used to use mithril silver under it.

Haha, I wasnt that impressed of the work done in your last set of pictures, yellow looked awful!

But in these last few the marine is really coming together, he is going to look awesome, love to see it finished.

Do you find it much quicker starting on sprue?

@torture. I find it a little easier to at least get the base colors down on a model before assembling. I cut the from the sprue, clean flash then wash all pieces with soapy water in a strainer. I then use a small drop of glue for plastic pieces or a tiny ball of green stuff for metal pieces to attach them to empty sprue pieces. It lets me get into the hard to reach places. The whole " if you cant reach it you cant see it" thing i dont go for.

To pretty much everyone lol. Sorry for the misconception. I find i make less mistakes by making more mistakes in the first coats of paint. Instead of painstakingly painting the whole model and having to cover any mistakes immediatly i have a go with the base colors and bring it all together the further along the mini gets. Getting more and more detail and careful the closer the mini is to being finished.

I am well inspired to collect Thousand sons now! It should prove a nice counter point to my Marine Army (Bear Claws). Plus i think the colour scheme and detail will be a good challenge to stretch my painting skills a little.

Collecting Forge World 30k????? If you prefix any Thread Subject line on 30k or Pre-heresy or Horus Heresy with [30K] we can convince LEGO and the Admin team to create a 30K mini board if we can show there is enough interest!
