Subject: Clanrats Old & New UPDATE 09/06/10

Just bought my first box of Clanrats this evening. I bought them from a shop that is . . . less than enthusiastic, shall we say, about supporting the GW products they carry.
While sitting here assembling them, I started to wonder about ranking these guys up considering their somewhat unwieldy tails. This sort of took me by surprise because I just read a few days ago that the new Clanrats' tails were much improved in this regard. So I started to browse a google image search and . . .
. . . lo and behold, I managed to buy ye olde Clansrats.
So . . . how do people think these guys would fit into a block of ye new Clansrats? My feeling is they would look terrible interspersed. But I know someone around here must have some firsthand experience in this regard. And if my instinct is correct, I'm wondering what I should use them for. They're definitely too well armored to be slaves. The store in question had another box of these guys and I've been thinking about going back to buy them. That way, one 40-rat maniple is old skewl and another is new.
Any ideas?

After browsing around a bit, I found this image of some old Clanrats from an UnderEmpire user called Nordic:
With rusty/oxidized armor and no shields, they do look pretty slavish. I was thinking that I could paint their cloth bits a camo green . . . maybe give them a Clan Pestilens feel.

My buddy has a few of them mixed into his new clanrats just to show everyone that he was with Skaven before 8th edition, so they won't think he just jumped on the Skaven bandwagon. Just throw them in there and say "warpstone does wierd things to them."

Nice suggestion, eledamris. I can't say these guys are proof I've been with the ratmen from time immemorial--not only because I am totally new to Skaven but also especially given that I bought them entirely by accident. So here's an update on my soon-to-be slaves . . . These guys are indeed a huge pain in the butt to rank up.

Ah yes my arch nemesis ranking large blocks of Clan Rats up personally I'd utterly mix them up they're anarchic Ratmen Legions they should look scruff undisciplined and random.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

I think they would fit in OK with the new rats, Maybe you should add some of the new plastic shields or swords on to them so that they blend a little better.

I agree with cain, you can't mix arms cause the new ones are thinner and less hairy but the shields could be swapped.
A unifying paintjob will be the thing that makes the difference, in big ranks they will be pretty well hidden I think.
Or you could paint them up as clan moulder and say they have been heavily mutated?
I had the same problem with the old rat ogre kit but a head swap and some GS fixed the problem, honestly those cartoon heads bug me!

I've actually been wondering whether the clans have color schemes. Is this the case? Automatically Appended Next Post: The second of the batch. The pictures are really awful, so I'm sorry for that. Looks like painting isn't the only thing I need more practice with . . . I really think this guy looks better than his pictures, which seem a bit pixelated. The paint is admittedly a bit heavy but it doesn't look quite that chalky to my eyes.

I know that the different clans have different symbols for their flags, not sure about colour schemes though, If I was to go for clan moulder I would probably go for white with a ton of wash to give it a grimy look, kinda like a whole clan of mad doctors. Maybe splatter them with blood a bit.
On second thoughts that might be a bit extreme, just thinking!

Another Clan Rat. I enjoyed working on his face but am not happy with the cowl. Bubonic Brown is a weird color for cloth.
On the plus side, I really like this one's pose.
