I friend of mine wanted to test me and told me to make a scratch built vehicle using Warhammer scale. I say "why not?" without thinking, like I always do, but then I realized I'd need rhinos for my army.

I know that there are "blueprints" to make them with paper and all, but that wouldn't be fair and I wanter to honour my friend's test, so I just looked for pictures of rhinos ont he net and used the digital meassuring system (that is, using my index and thumb against the screen to check the size and scale it up using my minis xDDD).

Here's the paper models I made and will use as a guide (I'm about to put them as the post uploads itself here), with lots of guessing, but the tortuous it get's, the funnier it is for me.

I will be watching this thread closely! I have always wanted to do a Imperial guard army, but couldn't afford the tanks, so this might help me out.

I wish you luck wish this, being cheap myself, I might copy this if it goes well.

This discussion is absurd. The mental gymnastics on display here are appalling. The combat familiar gives the DP two attacks with a specific profile. The special rule modifies the DP's attacks, no matter how it got those attacks. The CF's attacks are at AP 2. Anything else is stupid.

Well, I did the main hull with styrofoam (salvaged months ago, whenever a neighbour bought an electrodomestic xD)

It's not perfec, but the sole purpose of this is to serve as a crude skeleton for the plasticard.

EDIT: since styrofoam doesn't likes superglue, I've made a "mummy" with masking tape so I can glue the plasticard layers of it, but it's late, so I'll take pics tomorrow, with a marine there so the size can be seen.

I've buit several rhinos from plasticard over the years (and a few chimeras for my guard, too).

Good luck with this.

Rather than make the tracks, though, I bought pre-made tracks and used them. Many 1/35 scale WW2 tank tracks are the same width as a rhino tracks (just not the king tiger or Elefant).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

Heh, that's what I'm doing too. Except I'm cheating and using the blueprints.

Here's mine, made using 200 gsm paper and cereal carton cardboard:

I look forward to seeing how yours turns out.

But that's like trying to pilote a plane after taking classes and reading the plane's manual xD Where's the fun on that? :p

Honestly, I ussually pick something stupidly hard when I first try to do something, but since I don't have the space at home to store an Imperator Titan, I might as well try my first scratch build attempt with something I will use in my army :p

Building a vehicle with plans is bloomin' hard work, making it from scratch is even harder. If the scale or a portion is wrong the whole thing looks odd.

It isn't like piloting a plane after taking classes at all because you still have to put the theory into practice and learn, which is harder than you think.

I understand your desire, although the scale of your test already looks odd; too narrow.

If I am not in my room, is it still my room?

It was a joke (and the best I could think of after being awake for 21 hours -been like that for 3 days :\)

Elmodiddly wrote:I understand your desire, although the scale of your test already looks odd; too narrow.

It looks narrow because it's missing the tracks. According to my "digital" method to meassure it's still lacking about 1,5cm on each side.

Thank god for that, I thought you were going for a slimmer thing! Definately looks odd if it isn't short n squat.

If I am not in my room, is it still my room?

That's ok, since you're not in my head and vice-versa, such misunderstandings are to be expected every now and then.

I'll also add now a "from above" pic to rough tell how wide it'll be (of course, since I used plyestirene and masking tape, you all can tell it's not perfect, just an aproximation)

Don't forget those little grooves rhinos have on the sides on near the front and the back. I think those really help make the model.

I will ^^ Thanks.

I'm not at home now, but I'm working on this right now... and my family and friends call me crazy when I say yes to the question "You'll also make the tracks?" xDDD

During the M37 crisis and the big plasteel scarce, the Iron Priests had to device new methods to keep Rhinos going, and the answered layed there... the forests!

(yes, on the pic looks a little sided, fixed that allready, but I'm too lazy to take new pics xD)

All fixed now?

I've just noticed that english may not be your first language, but yours is still way better than many kids where I live.

It's ok, it was funny for a while, but that's all. No offence meant heheh

No offense taken, Orki; and yes, english is my third language, and I've learned it on my own, I never went to a languages school.

And thanks, Alairos and Killerturkey2, I'm glad that you think my handwriting is nice, most people, specially my professors, despise it xD

And, while watching both Conan's movies, I worked a little more on this frankenstein-like monster.

looking better.

I have tried to use wood to help with scratch builds and it never turned out well.

Looks mostly cardboard. Not sure how that will take paint.

Indeed, I started using plasticard (some left overs I had since when I studied SFX) but I forgot that it was a ***** to cut straight, so I switched to some cardboard left overs that I had since I can't recall when xD (and the wood and polyestirene used where salvaged from trash cans so, besides the paint and glue, it's a free Rhino )

And I'm confident on how it'll take the paint, as I primed some sections allready and the cardboard took it like a champ (I just need to cover the polyestirene with masking tape or else I'll end with a melted ugly thing).

Orki wrote:Yeah, getting there mate.

Thanks. And you're right about watered down PVA, but this cardboard specifically, can stand the primer perfectly, so I assume that it won't whimper against some acrylics.

Red Corsair wrote:I like plastic card stock, its super cheap on ebay.

That's a relative statement, if it's in USD or EUR or GBP, even the most negligible ammount will turn into an enormous ammount when switching it to my own currency.

Indeed it is, specially taking account that I'm guessing the shapes and measures, without a pattern to base myself on (in fact, I've commited a measure mistake on the rear (on side view), but to be honest, I started to like this better (I can't tell if it's because it actually looks better, or my subconciousness wants to make itself happy).

Looks to scale so far, I think it will come out better than most scratch build attempts.

Son can you play me a memory? I'm not really sure how it goes...

It's weird, perhaps you have ImageShack blocked where you connect onto Dakka? I'm not using the site's gallery space for the process, since it all looks fugly (the final product will only be plain ugly, hence semi worth of uploading it on my gallery here).

Ordo Dakka wrote:Looks to scale so far, I think it will come out better than most scratch build attempts.

Thanks a lot for the confidence and support given. I was thinking (as I invented measured on certain parts xD) to jockingly call this "Rhino Dark Pattern" because of all the inaccuracies.

And stopping with the words, pics showing what I've done today:

Wow. I'm really impressed with how well that Rhino is turning out. Can't wait to see the finished product.
