I decided I'd start a CSM army, so got myself some minis. Finally decided on a red/gold scheme (pinched from World Eaters/Oracles of Change types). As yet undecided tho on how I'm gonna basecoat the gold - what do people think will be better - Dwarf Bronze or Tin Bitz?

Depends on the look you want archry, tin bitz can give you a darker more coppery bronze while dwarf can be lightened up to gold in a couple of coats, i'd go darker just to be a bit different if i were you, it'd be nice against the red as well.

For a red/gold scheme I would definitely use Dwarf Bronze. I actually use Tin Bitz and Dwarf Bronze on my CSM army all the time. Let me show you a comparison with some of my stuff.
This back piece is tin bitz :
This back piece is tin bitz base coat with Dwarf Bronze drybrush over it:
The tip of this guys sword is pure dwarf bronze (oh, and the bolt pistol too):

They all look great, but I think I'll try Dwarf Bronze with a black wash then gold highlights. I reckon it'll be better since I'm going for a dark red on the rest of the armour... I'll post some photos of the finished model for your scrutiny!

I think that would work well.

Well, here is the 1st marine so far, still a work in progress. I base coated Mechrite Red and Dwarf Bronze, washed the whole model with Badab Black and went over it with Red Gore (or Scab Red) Burnished Gold. Not sure how to go about next highlight - I tried Blood Red but I felt it was too bright, maybe I'll try Red Gore and a bit of orange... Undecided whether to try blending or fine line highlights - I'm not too good at either (usually drybrush, but it's not ideal for marines)... What do you think?
Also I'm open to suggestions about colour choice for the holster, as I'm not too happy with it being red - too much of the same colour throughout the figure....

Use both, aren't they like a shade apart? Adding bestial brown or a bit of chaos black to either would probably be equivalent.
I use ancient bronze from reaper though.

Son can you play me a memory? I'm not really sure how it goes... |

You mean Scab Red and Red Gore? I used one for the 2nd coat over the wash, but because they're only a shade apart I can't remember which one I used...

Personnally, I would boltgun metal, Shining gold, Baal red wash. Used it on my Chaos stuff (no pics at work :-( sorry)
But its gives a pitted bronze finish.
