I saw that picture on another thread, any ideas on how he did it? (I couldn't ask on the thread, it was 3 months old.)

I'd take a guess and say judging by the sharp jagged edges that he used plaster. I got a good cooling lava effect by accident. I made a rock formation out of plaster bandage which I then covered in plaster to smooth it off. Then I sprayed it black. There were a lot of natural gaps and cracks on the surface which when I went over with some terracotta paint thinned down beyond normal ,settled in these gaps and strangely when dry gave off a muted lava effect. I did a textured space marine cloak with the same method and it looks good. The raised areas stayed black with a hint of terracotta while the gaps were more pronounced with terracotta pigment.

Ok, I was thinking about using No More Nails or something like it.
