Just a very quick tip for all you folks looking for good basing resources.

If you fancy making some really effective rubble it's dead simple. Use a cheese grater to shred a champagne/wine cork. Experiment with the different grating surfaces for a bit of variety in "rubble" size.

As far as painting goes, you may want to chuck some watered down PVA on there before base coating if the cork is too soft.

That's it. Enjoy saving saving some cash and winding up the missus.

I've added a bit about sealing the chunks with some watered down PVA if you're going to paint them. Soft cork + paint = cracked paint job = weeping hobbieist. Although it'll look great raw if your scheme is befitting.

Great idea man thanks...

Cheap cork boards are also good for breaking up and using as rubble..

Have you thought about running it through a food processor to get some really fine stuff? A good mix of sizes will always make it look better.

I don't see why not but you do actually get a nice, fine "gravel" from that really rough side of the cheese grater that nobody knows what it's used for. You know, the one that always takes your knuckles off when you do the washing up.

It's for finely grating stuff like hard cheese, ie Parmesan. Well, now it's for cork...
