as far as I can tell

you base with a dark blue, then hilight a little with a lighter blue

then with a couple coats of blue wash, do the whole thing, with a little overflow for the "haze" area, each coat slightly smaller than the last

then finish with a white drybrush and then blue and back and forth until the bright area is "right"

note i haven't done this before, but it seems like that would be the process from the picture.

there are two basic ways to do this. The first is to paint it like normal and then add very thin coats of blue (or whatever other color) so that it slowly fades into just the glow color. The other is to paint it in such a way where you layer it, and every layer is a mix of color that slowly biases in favor of the glow.

You will notcie the glowing area is surrounded by much darker tones. It is in fact this contract between the very dark and brighter tones that enhances the perception of the glow.

best bet mate it to try and try. try a few different techniques.

i find you get a similar effect if you put on the darker ble then a light brush aff a lighter blue. chuck a blu wash on it all to gie it some definition and then start applying very thin coats of lighter blues slowly getting light but so that you can still see the undercoats. after this chuck on some varnich and youll have a really nice effect.

and just remember the guy who painted that was probably a pro. get anywere near that and your singing lullabys

Paint as normal, then do thin coats of highlight color around glowing area. That is how I am going to be doing it, if it works I can post some pictures later this month.

The way I do my blue glows on my plasma guns is to start with a white base coat on the actual areas of the light source. Then I do a wash with asurmen blue and then rehighlight the edges which serve as the areas which have the strongest intensity with white. Then I do the surrounding areas with ice blue through an airbrush. You can do it by hand using really thinned down paints but it will take a lot more time. I used this technique in my blood angels devastator squad and really happy with the results.

Here's an article on OSL(Object Source Lighting), which is what that is, in a greater degree.

But for a plasma gun like that, you can do most of that with 2 or 3 colors of dry-brushing.

This discussion is absurd. The mental gymnastics on display here are appalling. The combat familiar gives the DP two attacks with a specific profile. The special rule modifies the DP's attacks, no matter how it got those attacks. The CF's attacks are at AP 2. Anything else is stupid.

Easy way of doing something like this is to basecoat the area of the coils with a very light and vivid blue, and then do kind of a reversed highlighting. The thing is that the dark parts on the picture is actually the coils themselves and not the recess between them, so gradually build up the colour on the raised part (the coils) from the light glow colour to a dark blue one and that should do the trick. If you don't know what I mean then this quick pic from a random plasmagun of the interwebs and some paint magic shows it, as it's actually the same as when you reverse colours to negative

Hope this helped
