He everyone,
I play Secrets of the third reich and I have a question about scales.
I really want to use a few tanks in the game but I dont know what scale to buy. The miniatures are like 28-30mm.
Do I buy 1:76
Or 1:48
I tryed google but I get different answers
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miniature_wargaming says 1:64
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miniature_figure_(gaming)#Scales says 1:73
Or this one???

1/48 is your closest scale for SottR. You really want 1/53 but it's a rare scale.
Good luck!

1/76 will be much too small That panther tank will be about 3" long (L77mm x W38mm) 1/48 as Achilles said. OT did the Panther get used in Africa as per the boxart?

Actually it's 1:56. Thing is, because all of your d00dz are on bases you have to base your 1:56 vehicles to make them look right. That's why 1:48 is popular because it's a bit of a scale cheat, like Michaelangelo's Mary in Pieta.

no, the Jesus is a 1:1 but Mary's a 2:1. It still looks ok with Jesus laying there in the foreground. Michaelangelo did put it on a base, but I'm not sure what other miniatures he was going to run alongside it. Given the scale, probably Inquisitor. If I had an Inquisitorial Group with Jesus, Mary and Brother Artemis, I'd win all the time!

Ok, Techinically, 1/56 is the correct scale. However nearly all wargames minaitures, even non-GW figs, are -for detailing, durability and paintability- somewhat "heroic" in scale and bulky in proportion. Compare 1/48 scale model firearms to 28mm firearms to see what I mean: The 1/48 model guns will almost always be much thinner than the supposedly smaller 28mm fireams.
That, and the basing issue mentioned before, mean that 1/48 models are your second best bet for model vehicles. Your best bet is slowly growing range of 28mm military vehicles (usually in resin/metal) from various manufacturers, but 1/48 scale model vehicles are probably more affordable and often more finely detailed.
For using historical model kits for sci-fi gaming, I base my decision on the size of the model rather than being tied to a specific scale. For Sci-Fi gaming in 28mm there are 1/48, 28mm, 25mm, and even 1/35 scale models that work well.

I agree with the use of 1:48 scale. As stated 28mm falls around 1:56-1:64 scale.
Unfortunately its not the most common scale for armor. 1:35 and 1:72 are the most common armor scales. 1:48 is a very common aircraft scale.

WW2 stuff is more common than modern stuff in 1/48, but that pales into consideration compared to 1/72, 1/76 or even 1/87 (all of which are too small).
Go 1/48. Good compromise on scale/detail for the minis.
Bear in mind also that the "miniature" scale depends on whether they are measuring to eyes, or top of head - and whether or not they actually care. GW scale is all over the shop.
