So they banned it!

That'll teach them to accuse the Red Chinese of being petty dictators!

And I thought the "Workers of the world unite" plastered on the front of Tiananmen square and the big portrait of Mao Tse Tung was there just for decoration. If they call Taiwan a Capitalist pig sty, maybe the PRC will change their mind.

Seriously, I love China. They don't give two gaks what the world thinks of them. But at the same time they murder criminals in soccer stadiums, which is very un-dude.

Yeah, it's nice to see a country doing whatever the hell it wants.

It's just sad when what they want to do is horrendous. It doesn't seem that Dakka Dakka has been banned in China though, if these spambots that keep popping up are any indication.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

China is the elephant in the room thst much of the world fears to adress.

Fequently they insist that we adhere to their interpretation irregardless of our will or thought. They get their own way too such as over the identity of Taiwan. I am enawed of Chinas successes in this regard, for how many disparante opinions are are now many people especially in the west enjoy their ability to express those disparate opinions. To make any headway is amazing allowing for the chaos of human interaction, the fact they manage to shut down, drown out or focus away from most vocal opposition in areas known for free speech that are outside their control is masterful, and worrisome.

This is why the successful resistence to pressure over the Nobel Peace Prize nomination is important. China used its political methodologies to try and prevent a Chinese dissident from attaining the prize, and failed utterly. Threats were used, they were ignored and China was told it wasnt going to get its way and wasnt going to stop the word from spreading.

The world must remain free free to point a finger openly at China when China does wrong. As there is a lot wrong with China this can only get interesting over time.

Petty dictator is an improvement on mad dictatorial tyrannical gets.
So at least they are moving in the right direction.
They should be happy.

And what better way to prove that you are not a petty dictatorship than by banning the newsagency.

On the other hand are they miffed at being called petty?
Maybe that is what upset them so.
They want to be considered the brutal despots of yore!

More of a fascist country to be honest. While the good hard working civilians of China are communist the goverment is completely fascist they pretend to be communist but they are far from it.

Look at how they solved freedom of speech and right to protest.

Has there ever been a great power as dominant in global affairs as China is with less ability to project power? Or are we just in a new paradigm of international relations where military strength is less important?

In terms of conventional military strength, China would probably struggle to retake an errant province on an island right off it's coast, much less threaten any other great powers. They're an economic giant now, but a billion and a half people will do that. I mean, at some point the international community is going to say, "wait, why on earth are we remotely scared of these guys?"

There used to be a theory that countries with democratic governments never went to war with each other. More recently, there has been a theory that countries with McDonalds's never go to war with each other.

More realistically, the globalisation of trade and capital means that many countries would find a war much more crippling through the loss of trade than through conventional destruction by arms. China being one of the great exporting nations, they would be seriously affected, even if not involved.

Which I think just reinforces my theory: yeah, we'd lose access to cheap crap from china, but without exports their economy collapses, right?

I'm thinking the US in 1812 style "opps, we need trade more than our partners do" style collapse.

Yes, to a great extent, however it is the fact that global trade is so interlinked between many countries who would all be seriously affected despite not being involved.

For example, if China went to war with Russia and called in a lot of its US Treasury Bonds to help pay for it, that would have a serious effect on the US and Europe despite us not being involved.

I'd personally consider it less of a communist dictatorship and more a communist bureaucracy, but that's just me.

Interestingly, this is a testament to international norms.

Why does China care that they're a communist dictatorship if the notion that democracy is good has no force?

You should read The Remnants of War by John Mueller. It covers a lot of what underpins your idea.
