Does Stellies continued success at competitive events demonstrate that he is as good as he claims and the naysayers are merely throwing mud? By success I am referring to his 3rd place at Nova and his undefeated day 1 at the battle for salvation (with wins against jaw and Danny inter webs)?

No, I'd say at this point people's minds are pretty much made up about him. They don't care how well he does, they still won't consider his advice because he's a big meanie.

When Stelek was making big noises on Dakka, he didn’t have any kind of a tournament record, and his opinions were presented in an overbearing manner which failed to garner respect.
Recently he seems to have started to win some events, which shows he has learnt something about playing.
I hope his presentation skills will have improved too, since it is difficult to be an effective teacher if most of the audience won’t listen to what you have to say.

The naysayers are rarely saying 'Stelek can't play'
The naysayers are the people offended by his binary, black-and white approach to advice. In the world of Stelek, if you don't agree with him, you're not only wrong, you're also an idiot. Any army which isn't top tier is not just 'less competitive', it absolutely sucks and you're an idiot if you want to play it.
It stuff like that that riles people about Stelek, not his ability to play.

Nothing about hating for me.. His "blog" was incoherent and ugly.. His typing skills and presentation was frustrating to read so why bother?
Doesnt matter how "good" someone claims to be if it gives you a headache to read their 'advice'. Also I just tend in general not to read tactics blogs, its all relative to your metagame and matchups. Until someone can fix who they play every round and what army they bring most tactics articles arent horribly useful
Best way to learn to play is to get real experience and lose against better players

For Stelek to be as good as he claims he'd have to win every event he shows up at until 10 years after he's dead. And winning a few games at some tournaments doesn't suddenly make up for his aggressivly rude 'I'm always right' attitude. It just means he won some games.

Stelek's done more than enough to establish whatever credibility is apparently required to have an opinion. My only problem with the man is his internet persona. If this is about Stelek being banned from dakka I believe Stelek was banned because he violated dakka's code of conduct, after repeated warning and even discussion over a period of months. The rules for this place are quite clear.

Considering that he was unable to soundly defeat DashOfPepper's (supposedly sucky) Orks with a tier 1 list says a bit about his arrogance and myopic viewpoint. Granted, Dash is a good player, but when you consider yourself one of the best and aren't able to win convincingly when you have a list advantage... I'd say Stelek is an above average player, but not the tactical genius he thinks he is.
Unfortunately, in this day and age, kids just take other's opinions for their own without any injection of their own thought. Thanks INTERNETS. You've made us all dumber.

I remember 20/20 had an interview with this guy that had supremely high IQ...but worked as a bouncer. When you listened to the guy talk, it was obvious he was really smart.
So why was he working as a bouncer?
Well, it's simple...he lacked proper communication skills.
That's stelek. Sometimes HOW you say something means more than what you're saying. You could write the best book in the world, but if you can't sell the idea of the book to a publisher, it's doomed to the round filing cabinet.
A lot of the things he said had merit...not all of it...but alot of it. He just couldn't express himself without looking like an asshat.

For those in the dark, Stelek is an internet personality who primarily focuses on 40k list construction and tactics. He posted here for a while, and now has his own blog called Yes the Truth Hurts. As others mentioned, Stelek tended to post in an extremely confident, occasionally abrasive style. He's known to dismiss players and armies that have success at events, usually by questioning the overall talent pool at those events. Personally his tournament success has been reasonably consistent but not overly noteworthy. He does have a large fan base, who tned to categorize anything negative Stelek says as "telling the truth," "being blunt," or "not sugar coating things." Of course, anything negative said about Stelek is usually viewed as "mudslinging" or "hate."

I liked Stelek's posts here on army lists he'd thought up.
I liked his sometimes fairly clever wording and the macho-ism would make me smile.
I never cared for his bizarre and aggressive behaviour towards the fairly benevolent administration of the site nor towards others for not being 'hardcore' enough or l33t enough.
Some people, being so buried in the hobby, forget that it's a hobby. It's just toy soldiers.
If you want to take it to tournament level and depth of detail, all power to you, just don't use your moderate success at a game to believe either that you are a better human being or that you are justified in being obnoxious.
Those who do well at wargames, due to the praise or adulation of others who play wargames, sometimes become internet celebrities within the hobby's circles. Those circles remain inexorably small and sometimes the ego demonstrated by these hobby internet celebrities is out of all proportion to that.
Nothing speaks better of the nobility of a person than their humility.

To his credit, Stelek keeps all his mudslinging wargame related. He may go off on tangents, but he doesn't insult people for non-wargame related topics. Yes, he'll happily critique lists when they haven't been presented by their owners, and some may view that as unfair, but it all is connected to the game, and list building.
Some of his opponents, on the other hand, happily question the existence of his wife, mock his miscarriage and make snide comments about his weight.
Crass or not, Stelek has his limits. Can't say the same for others.

I think a lot of his success comes from him playing Space Wolves. That army is tough to beat, and it is like playing in easy mode. If he is as good as he thinks he is, he should play another codex (Tau) and win. If he can win with an army other than the best build in the hardest army, then I will be impressed.
Note that the first time he went up against another SW army he lost due to his horrible tactics.
And if you look at my signature, you will see why the events that he plays in highly favors his armies.

I personally don't call SW's lists easy mode. I've had almost as much success with my Daemons and Nids to date this year. And I put a hell of a lot more work into tweaking my wolves than I have either of my other armies so far. SW's are just pure murder on your lists Blackmoor. But your lists are murder on other armies so chill on the SW's are OP rant. I barely lost to Reece's tuned and tweaked SW's while playing daemons and getting straight boned on rolls (his words, not mine). SW's are a good, solid book. But so are all the 5th ed. codexes and some of the 4th.
That being said he's bringing a list that has the best chance at taking the tourney (based on missions). Good for him. He's at least an above average player and I'd love to get a game in against him at the Nova next year.
He's a nice dude in person and I personally just tend to avoid getting to much into posting on his site as our views on the game differ greatly and it normally leads to "dishing truth" or "mudslinging" depending on which side your on
As for vindicating him. No. Because he doesn't need vindication. He's obviously a solid player based on the limited exposure we have but he's played in a single style of event. And if he takes home the title today then that's one more step for him. But more than a few of us around have taken a GT this year and that doesn't make everything we say right People take it to seriously and need to relax. And personally if some people read his blog and build a certain style of competitive build good for me. Cause either I'll a) get a better game against them or b) they'll get hammered because they don' tk now what the hell to do with it. Works for me either way

I like him. He posts *a lot of content* to his blog and, right or wrong, he always explains his thinking. His harshness, abrasiveness, and/or bluntness doesn't bother me, I just ignore it and focus on the useful content. He spends the time and effort to answer one heck of a lot of emailed questions / requests; I appreciate that.
Read what the guy says, consider his reasoning, and then either use his tactics / ideas or don't. This is the internet, he's not in your face; if you don't like what he's saying then ignore him.

I'm not going to get involved with whether Stelek was or wasn't good or knew what he was talking about. I can remember how rude he was to others though and how he wouldn't listen to others opinions while everyone has to listen to his as his was right.
Manners at the end of the day are still free. This place is called a forum for many to express their views. I don't think that there was room for the rest of us when Stelek did post here.

Stelek was the newer version of the whole "internet toughguy that trash talks but is actually good"
Except, he has never actually proven how good he is, and he trash talks way more than the average trash talker.
He is extremely unwilling to admit when he is at fault, and his goons act pretty brain dead with the effort that they go thorough to not question him, and to denounce "haters".
It's like if mauleed was less cool and less good at the game and more of an ass hat.
