Okay Gents,
I am just finishing up my SW army (for now), so its time for a new army. While my eyes were excited for possibly doing a Steel Legion army thanks to Helreach novel, I cannot deny I want to polish my SM tactics before moving on to a new army. So here we are, I have decided to make a two in one army. The army theme will be the Fallen Dark Angels army. It will have the ability to be played as both a Chaos Army or a Vanilla Space Marine Army. Eventually I may make an armylist for Dark Angels dex, but I don't care much for their dex actually.

Anyway, the list of what to be done:
-20 Marines w/ 2 PF, 4x Meltas, 2 ML
-10 Assault Marines/Bezerkers (Magnetized Jump Packs) w/ PF, 2x Flamer
-2 Razorbacks w/ Las/Plasma
-3 Rhinos
-Predator AO/HB
-Thunderfire Cannon
-2 Oblits
-1 DP

Fallen Angels (Vanilla SM) Army List - 1,000 Pts.
-Libby w/ JP
-Assault Squad w/ PF, 2x Flamer
-2x Tactical Squad w/ ML, Melta, Las/Plas Razorback
-Thunderfire Cannon
-AO/HB Predator

Fallen Angels (Chaos) Army List - 1,000 Pts.
-DP w/ Lash, Wings
-2x CSM w/ PF, 2x Melta, Rhino
-6 Bezerkers w/ PF, Rhino
-2 Obliterators

Generally speaking, I am going to try to avoid using any actual Chaos models in this army. With that in mind, I will be using Grey Knight Terminators/Vanilla Terminators converted for the Obliterators. The DP will probably end up being a Venerable Dreadnought converted, this is because it is the closest match to the size of the DP model, and can look just as bad-ass. The Bezerkers/Assault Marines will be the same models, I will probably do a simple trim on the shoulder pads to represent them seperate from the other Tacts/CSM. The thunderfire cannon will definitely end up being a conversion of some sorts due to the $50 GW price tag for one model.

Anyway, I have already purchased the bits via ebay. I got a great deal for enough bits for the 30 marines I will be making, I already had 10 older metal ones. I will be using Chaos Arms/Weapons & DA Backpacks/Pads/Robed Bodies/Heads.

From my eBay experience, I must definitely recommend eBay Member ids hoard_*_bits & window-box . After all was said and done, I was able to get enough parts to make 20 Robed Marines with enough to spare for my 10 metal robed marines. The total so far was $78.60! Not too bad. I was able to get the Rhinos/Razorbacks from some fellow DakkaDakka members for a grand total of roughly $60 shipped!

Anyway, here is a little teaser pic with the bitz I have gotten so far. I will definitely keep this updated as I do more work with the army.

A very promising start to your project, with some great bargains by the sounds of it. I gotta ask though, which paint scheme will you be using? Loyalist DA or pre-heresy DA?

Pre-heresy, so black armor, bleach-bone robes. I have been trying to find some pictures of the Fallen Angels, but to no avail. So I am going to go with the Pre-Heresy photos I can find. My only concern is with the black armor looking bland, I guess I will use a dark-grey to highlight it a bit though. Tedious? Is there any easier method?

I am still waiting for the rest of my bits to come in so I can assemble the rest of the marines. I am still debating how to make my assault marines stand out from the rest of the tactical marines. Any ideas? I was trying to look through pre-heresy photos seeing if any assault marines had any coloring differences, but I found nothing.

You already have a space marine army and you start another another army that is also space marines? I cant understand passing up Eldar, Dark Eldar, Tau, orks, necrons, tyranids, Imperial Guard, an Inquisition army and daemons for another pile of space marines; I guess to each his own.

That being said robed hooded SM are kinda cool. I think you could use Chaos SM back packs. They look cooler, imo, and if you removed the chaos iconography from them they would have a unique feel.

I play SW & BA, I have never played Vanilla SM before, and I don't want to learn a whole other set of tactics, so I figured this army would allow me to keep working on them while seeing how they can be incorporated into Chaos. Also the 3+ save has probably jinxed me, and the other races are too squishy!

The Consecrators successor chapter use the pre-heresy livery of the DA. So I'm guessing that'd be a good place to start. Also there is an epic thread on seer of a 10000 point pre heresy DA force including converted knights that represent the older members of the chapter who were unable to undergo transformation into full marines. That may be worth a look, I'll try to get a linky added.

Many thanks on the link, definitely some insightful stuff there. It seems he went with a dark-green color though, I was pretty sure that the original DA were black armored though? All the pre-heresy pictures I have seen pretty much depict them as such.

If you check out the Terran marines further into the thread you'll see the black armour of the DA.

Well Gents,
Progress was going slowly, but I have pretty much finished the modeling aspect at least for now. The Marines are all done, I even have my Librarian HQ, Techmarine, and of course Cypher ready to go for painting. I will be using the old DA Ezekiel (sp?) model as my Libby. Also, the mech side of the army is done except for a few things, namely, a possible whirlwind and the main attraction the Thunderfire Cannon.

I will start looking for a Venerable Dreadnought model to pose as my DP. Once I get the model I will start conversion on that, I would prefer to have all my base modeling done before I start to paint anything really. Then I have to work on my Obliterators, I will be using Grey Knight Terminator Models for that, maybe Deathwing Terminators instead, we shall see. I just like the look of the GK Termies in terms of looking older.

-Thunderfire Cannon

Well, I have gotten a little more done. I just finished up my Thunderfire Cannon, I think it turned out pretty well. Also I have started on my DP Dreadnought. He has been magnetized and I have started to convert him into a Venerable. I am just waiting on his arms to be stripped and for some GS to arrive so I can finish him up. I am also debating how to construct him a nice Banner Pole, it will more than likely come from some Sprue parts.
Also I was able to print out some custom made Chapter Banners, I have included a picture of them. They came out pretty well, Adobe Photoshop CS3 is great!

The DA chapter badge is a sword with wings, m'lady I believe is painting her's red.

cool stuff, i love black da, even if they are scummy fallen pre heresy da were all black with crimson chapter symbol and gold trimings on the higher ups. i qould read decent of angels and fallen angels from the hh series, they will give you some good idea's, they have given me tons lol. liking the old school rhinos too, have not painted one of those since early 90's

Many thanks gents. The Thunderfire was quite a bit of work. It is exactly a weapon off of an Ork Stompa. I then used some SM bike/vehicle bits to work it out. The "Laser Guidance" is just a Pintle-mounted ML from an SM vehicle sprue. Anyway, I think it came out pretty well, my "ghetto" tripod was some chopped up sprue pieces. Anyway, I am going to definitely spruce up the base a bit and probably add some sand bags or rubble.

Anyway, I just need to finish up the Dread and still get my GK Termies for the Obliterators. Once that is done, painting will begin. I also need to get some Khorne Berzerker backpacks when I decide to use my assault marines as bezerkers.

Next update will definitely include my first delve into GS for filling in the gaps on the Dread...wish me luck!

Also, I am slowly reading the HH books correlating to the DA, but it is a slow read, I have been jaded by the SM Battle Novel series in terms of absolutely EPIC writing!

Okay, so I have been looking over my Assault Marines, I want to change their jump packs.

I have decided to either do the Sanguinary Guard Jump packs or the CSM Raptor (Newer ones).

Any input on that topic?

Few things firstly I would hold off on the GK purchase until after Christmas and GW's plan are a little more clear for the plastic GK box.

As to the JPs definitely no to the BA, I think they'll damage the overall feel of the army. Have you considered the jump packs from either chapter house studious or from maxmini, they are both styled in the older pre-heresy style.

In reference to the GK's, I have thought about that as well, if I cannot get a sweet deal on a few here, then I will definitely just convert some regular AOBR termies for now. And see what the plastic kits look like come March.

The chapterhouse ones are good, tho there are small metal bits

As a suggestion for your obliterators - maybe you could get hold of some of the original dreadnoughts (Chuck, Fred and Eddie, I think). I am using them in my own Fallen chaos marine army, and they look good with a few weapon swaps and an odd icon from the DA upgrade sprues...

Do you have any photos for reference? I am not quite sure which dreads you are refering to.
