Subject: Decent BA DoA list?
|

Just getting into my counts-as Blood Angels and I'm thinking that I want to go for an all DoA list. Since I hope to bring this to heavily competitive tournaments, I am looking for maximum effectiveness. I'll give my general impressions once I'm done with the list.
HQ
Librarian - jump pack, unleash rage, shield of sanguinius 125
Honor Guard - 4 flamers, jump pack 185
ELITE
Sanguinary Priest - jump pack 75
Sanguinary Priest - jump pack 75
5 Sanguinary Guard - chapter banner, 3 infernus pistols 260
TROOPS
10 Assault Marines - 2 meltas, powerfist 235
10 Assault Marines - 2 meltas, powerfist 235
10 Assault Marines - 2 meltas, powerfist 235
10 Assault Marines - 2 meltas, powersword 225
FAST ATTACK
5 Vanguard Veterans - thunder hammer, sergeant w/power sword, melta bomb 200
1850 Points. 58 models.
I'm a little concerned about certain deathstar units as I really have nothing that can tackle them directly. I considered dropping the sanguinary guard and bumping down one of the RAS to make room for another librarian and honor guard w/ either meltas or plasma. In games where I feel I'll have the CC advantage or where I feel I'll be facing lots of battle cannons the like, I'll probably combat squad all the RAS to spread them out and go for an MSU style approach to combating IG and SW parking lots.
Vanguard Vets (as I understand it) do benefit from DoA so their primary job with be to drop behind enemy lines and smash tanks. Otherwise, they'll pick on smaller units such as Devs and Snipers. I'm a little uncertain about my unleash rage or fear the darkness power on my librarian. OTOH, Blood Lance might be nice for a little more anti-tank.
I think about the only times I won't be DoA*ing* is against Tyranids or Horde Orks - the 18" charge range across the army will be pretty vital on getting the charge on Ork mobs or avoiding large Genestealer Mobs the like.
Anyway, that's the army - can it give SW/IG/Vulkan and the like a good fight?

Not a Ba expert but the list looks pretty good. It would absolutely destroy my mech Vulkan list. I dunno how it would do against hordes/power blobs though, you only have 1 unit with template weapons (although the number of attacks alone might do the trick). Your gonna have to maneuver carefully to get the charge and not get shot up or counter charged.
I really like the vanguards, their heroic intervention synergies nicely with DoA. Not a big fan of the Sang guard (no invuls and their power weapons are two handed ) I would probably drop them for another libby/ honor guard like you said.

well - the sanguinary guard will be accompanied by the librarian so they'll have a 5++ save and preferred enemy. The chapter banner gives them all +1 attack (at all times) in CC so on the charge those 5 guys are (along with the Librarian) 25 S5 I5 power weapon attacks on the charge. A 2+/5++ with FnP makes for a pretty resilient unit - of course the invulnerable save can be negated via a psychic hood.
Alternately, I'm toying with the idea of dropping the 4th RAS squad to make room for more Vanguard Vets. I suppose I won't know until I actually play some games with this army.

Personally I would change Unleash Rage with The Sanguine Sword, since the Sanguinary Guard already got 1 re-roll per turn from their master-crafted weapons and a strength 10 Force Weapon is always useful. Automatically Appended Next Post: Also might be worth considering to remove the Infernus Pistols from the Sanguinary Guard and find 20 other points you can spare to upgrade the Librarian to an Epistolary so you can use the Unleash Rage/The Sanguine Sword/or whatever psychic power you have and the force weapon in the same turn.
I guess the Vanguard Veterans got Jump packs? their pointscost seems to say so but it aint added to their wargear.

Re-write one. do you prefer this version of the list?
Librarian - unleash rage, shield, jump pack 125
Librarian - shield, fear the darkness, jump pack 125
Honor Guard - 4x meltas, jump pack 205
Honor Guard - 4x plasma, jump pack 205
2x Sanguinary Priest - jump pack, combi-meltas 170
2x10 RAS - 2 meltas, powerfist 470
1x10 RAS - 2 flamers, powerfist 225
1x 5 RAS - flamer, powersword 120
5 Vanguard Vets - thunder hammer, power weapon 195
Lose some bodies and the sang guard, but gain more honor guard, a librarian and more special weapons.
EDIT: I messed up the math

Not sure that you need 4 bubbles of Feel no pain/FurÃous charge, or that depends on how you will play it, but if they will be fairly close to each other and so it might be worth dropping one sanguinary priest(or maybe even both) and get melta bombs on one Vanguard Veteran and maybe a heavy flamer/Multi-melta Land Speeder. While its no jump packing descending angel it do have deep strike and can be used to hunt down fast skimmmers and flushing out small squads on far away objectives.
Also removing the Infernus Pistol on the Assault Marine Sergeant in the 5 man squad will enable him to get a power fist add a another melta bomb to some squad(or add melta bombs to more models instead of giving him a powerfist), I personally find 3" melta a bit too short on anything without bs 5 that got nothing better to take. Automatically Appended Next Post: Other than that its down to personal taste, I rarely take two of the same HQ but thats just me, 2 Librarians sure do have its benefits, overall it looks decent enough.

Thanks for pointing that out - my inexperience with BA is showing. I totally forgot that the honor guard sang priest has the 6" rule. Will think about the list some more

Righty
Since you are using alot of anti-tank and such I suggest checking out "The Blood Lance" psychic power, I have found it useful to pick out more than one tank, works rather good against killa kan mobs also, or terminators(the non-storm shield ones atleast).
Happy tinkering!

If you are going for a DoA alpha strike list that includes Sanguinary guard than Dante is a must have. Making the Sang guard scoring and allowing one unit to not deviate is a huge boon to the armies effectiveness.

I'm not so sure I agree. The first list had plenty of scoring with the craploads of Assault Marines, and while Dante can make one unit not deviate at all, that's not as huge as it would be without DoA. He's also not much in combat, or at least not enough to justify taking him just for that alone. If he wanted to run more than one SG unit, I'd say go Dante, but just running one...meh.
Also, OP, for what it's worth, I like the first list much more than the second.

Yeah, I am leaning towards liking the first list more as well. I think that it both lists have their strong points (more bodies vs. more special weapons). I think it'll be up to playtesting.
