February 2010. I was supposed to be painting my Chaos Warriors for a campaign battle that we had scheduled, so of course I pulled out my Chaos Space Marines instead and decided that Khone needed a new Dreadnought that took as much advantage of the new rules as possible.

The model started out as an old Blood Angels Furioso Dreadnought but I cut the Multi-Metla off and glued in twin-linked Heavy Bolters, that was good enough for the games I was playing at the time. This had to be different. Something that just screamed "Blood for the Blood God!!!", you know? So I started cranking it out.

Mind you, I had a few beers and what started as inspiration started to get quite silly:

Yes, I got called out for using an old Ork Dreadnought Power Claw, and the model wasn't even legal. I scrapped the project until September 2010 when we decided to play a 5,000 pt per side game of my Chaos vs. his Tyranids. I am terrified of Tyranids. They just creep me out. I considered making this Dread untra-shooty but then decided to roleplay my force and really researched it this time. I wanted to make it a Close Combat monster so I dropped the TLHB and bought a buzzsaw attachment from Warmachine. I also spent the few extra points to strap a heavy flamer on it. I made the Heavy Flamer out of old IG vehicle bits. This was the result:

A few days ago I posted that on a Dreadnought thread and after looking at it I decided that it deserved a little more attention. So I took it off the Shelf of Shame and put a little work into it. I changed a few things around and put a couple hours into it. This is where things are right now:

I still have things I want to do with it but it's on the way to becoming a decent piece in my army instead of being filler on my points list.

Comments are welcome, always interested in hearing other opinions.

My opinion, the modelling side is outstanding. It looks nasty, evil and very very cranky.

On the painting side I like your scheme and your washing. My suggestions are to water your paints down more and highlight in 2 levels, first level in red probably blood red then maybe 50/50 blood red and an orange (red and white obviously makes pink which is not what you want).

Overall a stunning piece which deserves attention as a centrepiece in your army. Keep up the excellent work

Thanks for replying. One of the main issues w/ the paintjob is that it is... *thinking* ... at least 4 or 5 layers thick. It was based white, painted Blood Angels red, then based black, painted Crimson Gore, based black, painted current colors w/ more layers to shade the layers that were layered over to cover the layer beneath... I know I should have just stripped it down completely but at this point that's not going to happen.

I am still experimenting w/ highlights, that is a process that intimidated me for years and now that I am finally starting to practice it I find myself painting over my work frequently. I feel that it will be a while before I'll be able to call highlighting a "skill".

I'll be posting more here as I finish this Dreadnought up.

I find the Dread has too much red. Some parts need to stand out more. Personally, I would paint the fist and buzz-saw another colour.

Also, your pics are too small. Increase at least another 2000 pixels.

That is very menacing. I see what you mean about great minds think alike. I was gona stick the head on like that, but it is khorne looking, and would not work on mine. I have started another chain fist like the one you want to steal from my dread, it is perfect for a khorne dread and you will need to steal that one for sure will start a WIP of that soon. Keep up the good work.

Great stuff, personally I would remove the cowling from the circular saw, they would never be so safe great work.

The USS Orinoco was a Federation Danube-class runabout that was in service with Starfleet in the late 24th century, attached to Deep Space 9. It was outfitted with a sensor pod.

I agree. Problem is I could not find what I wanted in the time I had and I am not nearly skilled enough to sculpt it off and have it look 1/2 decent. The cowl is lame but until I find a bit that I like better it is what it is.

I've changed / improved the left arm significantly. I downsized the flamer so the nozzle fits *under* the Power Fist instead of jutting out, reduced the fuel tanks to just 1 instead of 3 (doesn't have that cool 1960s prototype rocket look anymore, but oh well) flipped the Power Fist around backwards and fitted a Chaos Dreadnought Power Claw to it. Pics this weekend, I'm too beat to go through all that right now but I've got a lot of work done on it and I'm looking forward to posting it here.

I like the way you made a couple of rough patches look like integral parts of the paint scheme. Very slick. Plus I'm a sucker for crazy ass chaos conversions....like it a ton.

GW had been such a bunch of bitches about releasing a new chaos dread kit, neh?

What he said about the saw...unless its cast in there, in which case it would be a bit of a nightmare to hack it up and GS the thing.

Ok, here it is:

I tore off the old flamer stuff I had on it, which is too bad because I liked how it looked but it is what it is and I can try it again on a different model some other time. I ground off the Bolter barrels of the Storm Bolter that was on this arm and attached nozzles from the Heavy Flamer bit and attached a single fuel canister. It's not as majestic looking as it was before but the trade off is that this flamer doesn't look ridiculous by sticking way out ahead of the Power Fist... which isn't there anymore either. I popped the claw part of the standard Imperial Dreadnought PF off and just flipped it around backwards. Then I took a snipped Chaos Dreadnought Power Claw and attached it.

Yes I know it looks like a kindergartner used poster paint to paint this. It is what it is. I'll make it look quite awesome once I put some time into it.

You know... I'm, going to remove that fuel canister. I don't like it anymore. Next pics won't have it.

I agree, the canister makes that arm too busy looking. Dunno about the claw currently....maybe remove it and hollow out a bit of a depression in the wrist then socket it with a glob of GS? Easier to pin that way too.

Awww, less trophy racks. I really liked the double row on each side.

Oh yeah... that broke off. Will be putting it back on.

I case you haven't noticed, this isn't my "premiere WIP" blog. It's more of a "hmm... yeah, I'll try that... uhm... well, maybe not" and a lot of "oops... don't do that again. Ever."

I'll be back.

That approach works strangely well with chaos. The roughed up places on the dread armor look appropriate. I like it!

It is looking better. I love the buzzsaw, not loving the claw so much, but I do think it's a step up from the massive flamer. Keep up the good work, it gives me ideas!

Sometimes I get annoyed with something and this happens:

I could not find anything on this arm that was making me happy w/ the result, so I ripped it off and stripped it. So progress has slowed a bit as you can imagine.

There was so much paint on this that even after 2 days of soaking I'm still going to have to use a pin and another brush to get it all.

Not sure where this will end but at least it's off to a better start than where it was.

I liked the claw a lot. It is very chaosy, especially the mask/face that you added on.

Sometimes its better to just start over again. I'd love to see a Dread CCW that looked similar to the Reaver Chaos Power claw.

Hi Skalk Bloodaxe

Any progress. Where did you get the right arm saw from? I was thinking it would look really good stuck onto an Ironclad seismic hammmer.

Hi tipios. No progress at all. Right around the same time I got frustrated and ripped that CC arm off and stripped it I started working pretty hardcore on my Death Guard and that has consumed every waking moment that doesn't involve my job or maintaining social obligations.

The right saw blade is a bit from War Machine. Not exactly what it comes from, I was surfing bitz on eBay and saw that, decided to check it out and it was perfect. Only thing I don't like about it is the cowl but it is a single cast and I'm not going to ruin it by trying to carve out the plastic in the shape of a buzzsaw. I'm not that good. I have thought about making some impression casts and then piecing them together but my motivation to do that is lacking.

But APOC looms on the horizon and I'm going to have to bring everything I've got to the table. My World Eaters are a sizable part of my "Chaos United" force (as united as it can be w/o Tzeentch or Slaanesh anyway... ha) and that Dread is awesome. No ranged weapons = no fire frenzy, and if it freaks out and charges the enemy, great! I'll be a slam dunk quick fix once I find the right attachment.

That said, what is this Ironclad seismic hammer you speak of?

Wow, thats alot of work you have been doning on your death guard, and good work too. I love the land raider.

Heres a link to the hammer.

It's a big drill for killing, but I think your saw on the end of it would look really cool.

Any way good luck finishing the death guard, I really want to see the land raider finished.
