Subject: Necron Army - 'Winter' Scheme
|
 |
I'll Be Back
|
A couple of weeks ago, I dived back into my cupboard to rekindle my love for 40k. I had given to hobby a break for 5 years or so until now. Anywho, long story short, I wanted to start a new army from fresh. I liked the look and feel of the Necrons, and had given the codex a thorough reading, as well as composing several Battle Rosters to experiment with what I wanted to buy.
I had decided early on that I was going to divulge from the normal 'metallic' path, and instead opt for a winter scheme. With this in mind, I present to you exhibit A. This is my first attempt at painting in 5 years, so be kind! I personally was quite pleased with how it came out. It dosen't stand up to too much close inspection, and I know the eye has leaked over a bit - I intend to fix that.
Comments appreciated!

Well welcome back to painting! I would imagine that when you say 'winter scheme' I am looking at a picture of either grey or white scarabs? I cant tell, just assumed they were metallic. I do like the lens piece being blue....dont know how that will clash ultimately with the green pieces. I think you should make the lens look more reflective by adding different shades of blue. Nice work though

You can buy blue rods from Plastruct to replace the green rods, which will give you a great thematic look to them. I like the base, but a gem-like highlighting on the eyes would add a lot of character to them. It also looks like you may have jumped a few too many shades on the highlighting, as it looks a bit dusty.
3/32" is the size. http://www.plastruct.com/Pages/OnlineProductDetail.lasso?CCode=FARB-3H for the blue ones . They're a bit weakly coloured so an Asurmen Blue wash may give them some more oomph.

Promising start, though I should warn you if you're trying to diverge from the norm, winter schemed Necrons are a fairly common variant.

Thanks for the comments. I noticed that people tended to go for the winter scheme when doing something a little different. I'm not too concerned - I have some ideas for unique twists and conversions for models that will hopefully make the army itself individual, even if the paint scheme is a tad cliche. And I probably should have mentioned, I do intend to buy them blue rods - the green ones would indeed clash. I just couldn't miss the opportunity to change the rod colour!
I have to go to work, so I can't gather my currently made models for pictures right now. However, I shall do so tomorrow, as well as throwing in the army listing that I am currently building it around.

adding a glow effect to the eyes would be cool and is not really difficult.
just add a little white to the blue and paint it on the basic blue, leaving visible a bit of the darker blue at the edges.
lot of blabla,heres a pic

Gah!. I'm bad at this. I meant to post a few days ago, but got thouroughly distracted by my job. What's worse, the offering that i bring to you is meagre at bast. I haven't actually painted any new miniatures yet, but have finally recieved all of my stuff through the post, assembled it and (mostly) undercoated it. Below are some pictures of the army so far (minus 3 scarabs). A lot of it has been purcahsed on eBay, and so is either reconditioned (paintstripped) or brand new but previously owned.
Also included is my 1250 point army list, in keeping with the ongoing tournament GW is hosting. I hope to throw in a monolith at the end of this month and take it to 1500pts. I will also be playing with the army tomorrow night, and will endeavour to produce a sort of battle report. Perhaps even pictures as well. Who knows.

Also Hamhamlunchbox, that is what i have done to the eyes. Not sure if you mistook the technique for reflected light or meant I was doing it slighty wrong.

Looking good. I am just wondering if you are going to put a few bits of snow flock on the base seeing as they are winter themed? I think it would look very cool to have the nice base you have now with a few patches of snow, lending the idea that it was early spring! Either way, great start!

I like the random patch of snow idea. And your models look really good. Im interested to see some of those conversions you were talking about.

I was thinking along those lines. Instead of trying ti paint on the snow effect Id paint them as normal, then use snow/winter flock to get the desired effect.

How do you feel about having snow dusting the backs of the destroyers and on the shoulders of the warriors -- maybe even some icicles hanging off of guns and so forth?
That would cool.
