A small tournament on the 20th when Dads double up with their lads. I am taking my 9yr old Brother, although not technicaly my Son. He is my godson, incredibly young AND a decent replacement to my currently 3 week old.

500pts each 1 Troop 1HQ min each. Like WD Doubles not allowed a second Heavy Fast Elite until others are all filled.

Playing to his Nids strengths (FlyingDakkaRant, Biovores, Stealers and Warrior models) I intend to focus on cracking tanks so he can eat all the candy inside. I am bringing my small guard contingent for this.

This is also frightningly all the guard models I own WYSIWYG:

Commisar Lord
-Power Sword
-Carapace Armour
-Melta Bombs

Platoon Command Squad
-Captain Al'Rahem
-Melta Gun
-Flamer

Platoon Infantry x2 Blobbed with Commisar Lord
-Grenade Launcher (2 total)

Lascannon Heavy Weapon Team

Autocannons Heavy Weapon Team

Everything outflanks so I am relying on the Hive Tyrant taking Hive commander. Al'rahem is for 2 bring it down commands a turn from turn 3 onwards. I have to take a platoon to get the Heavy Weapon Teams.

Thoughts?

Tourney is this Sat now, and I have tried to finalise what my brother wants to bring. He askes for his spine gaunts to finaly get a play for once and to take a Tyrant with hive commander so they can outflank (Yay for me), with defencive upgrades as he is the only thing to strat on the field. He wanted to fill the extra points with genestealers but I can not make them fit.

Hive Tyrant
[Toxic Sacs] [Hive Commander] [Twin Linked Brainleach Devourers]x2
Hive Guard x2

Gaunts x16
[Spinefists]x15 [Strangle Web]

Spore Mine x4

Dropping the spore mines and the Guard yield 160 spare points but then suddenly the Tyrant is fragile to first turn shooting. And once he is down his guants have 0 synapse.

Oppinions?

IG list seems okay, especially if that's all the models you have. An all outflanking army is a decent idea and you have synergies between the two.

On the Nids, toxin sacs for tyrant is not needed. I would also make him a CC monster as there is plenty of ranged in your joint army anyway - lash whip and bonesword FTW. Tyrant guard are also CC only, so sitting back is a waste of their skills as well. Is tyrant build fixed or can you change him? Charging into CC is also a simple tactic for a 9 year old!

If you want stealers, I would maybe suggest only 1 tyrant guard. Add toxin sacs to the gaunts (and drop them to 12 models) and you can then have 9 stealers with toxin sacs or 8 stealers without sacs and 1 broodlord. Tyrant may not take all the heat as the enemy has rending stealers coming up behind them as well as lascannon and autocannon teams which can kill their transports.

Enjoy!

Yes the tyrant is interchangable, and the Tyrant Guard are proxied from Biovores. I do fear that first/second turn this monster will be recieving the full firepower of 1000pts. This is why we shielded him up. You mention dropping Toxin Sacs and then making him a CC monster, wouldnt Dual Scythes/Toxin's re-roll to hit then wound be better than a small chance of instant death.

Wings is a slight potential for him, but then he is realy vulnerable. I cant rely on there being LOS blocking cover for him.

Any particular reason for toxic sacs on the SpineGaunts?

Finaly forgot to mention the Tyrants Psyker moves. He likes to take the stock 'Steal your wounds' and the 'WS BS to 1'

Tonight we will go through his list again making him less 'pinning' and more 'assaulty'. any other thoughts?

If you want more assaulty, nothing makes me go "oh dear...." than a tyrannid warrior squad armed with boneswords + lash whips. Being reduced to I1 is not fun.....

Hive tyrant and one guard can still take a lot of shooting. With 500/500 points and both having to take 1HQ, 1 troop it leaves little scope for lots of high strength shooting. They will need to chuck all they can at the tyrant and he may still get to CC in round 2 - albeit with a few less wounds. Not having ranged weapons there will be no temptation to not run in the shooting phase in turn one. Having a fire magnet will then take the pressure off the genestealers and IG heavy weapons, which will turn out to be the real killing units in your army. Just hope your younger brother can deal with his HQ being shot up "for the greater good"!

Remember, tyrant is WS8 and S6 so the toxin sacs don't give the same benefit as for lower strength models. He'll often wound on 3+, so toxin sacs can conversely worsen his position.
Lash whip makes any strong HQs he runs into attack at I1 - this is the benefit not the bonesword. With WS8 and already rerolling 1s there is little benefit from dual scything over the lashwhip. Paroxysm/leech essence can both be very good as there will not be much anti-psy kicking around.

For gaunts, the 4+ auto wounds does give them the chance of wounding high toughness troops, MCs etc and so you can survive CC. Spinefists are only 12" range so CC is a strong likelihood.

On final thought, I was just questioning the use of hive commanader. Stealers will outflank anyway and if gaunts outflank out of synapse then they only have that first round before they resort to instinctive behaviour. Why not just let the stealers cover the squishy outflanking IG while the gaunts advance in front of the tyrant. Then slam the door shut on them from all sides! (this would save 25 points which can go on a stealer and another gaunt). No one will waste shots on the gaunts and they won't CC them either with the risk of a counter charge from the tyrant!

Let us know how you get on ...

Thank you for all your advice and help. He finalised his list to this:

Hive Tyrant
[Hive commander][2xScything Talons]

Tyrant Guard x1

Spine Gaunts x16
[Spinefist x15] [Strangle Web]

Genestealers x8
[Toxin Sacs x8]

We took part in only two battles due to the low turn up of other Father/Son teams. Will put them up asap.
