For some reason I always picture them (the corrupted ones from Gaunt's Ghosts at least) as looking like the old Necron Immortals.
Realistically I suppose they could look as crude or as sophisticated as you like though.

I've never seen those before but they suit the image i had in my head perfectly.
Also there are no fluff descriptions apart from the Gaunts Ghosts novel (Can't remember which one) since they were outlawed and destroyed a long time ago.

TO be honest, since they were created at the very height of Man's technological expertise, I'd expect them to be a lot more sophisticated-looking than Imperial technology.
I would imagine something smooth and sleek, like the robots in AI. The implication in the Iron Men story was that they were not all 'combat' robots.

Try about ten years ago? The other necron models from that time are so so in my opinion. Though if you go to the GW site listed under collectibles you should fine the old tomb lord model. Warning. ALL METAL. Those old immortals = heavy!

Imperial technology isn't neccessarily used for it's original purpose, the STC for Imperial robots very well could have originally been for some kind of farm equipment, and the Imperium just tacked guns onto it.
Most likely the 'men of iron' were a wide variety of sophisticated robots and non-bodied computers filling a variety of roles, not one single thing. Remember that the references to 'men of iron' are in ancient legends that for the people of the 41st millenium are 3-4 times older than recorded history is for us, so they're going to be vague.

Apart from the Gaunts Ghost novel where they find an Iron Man STC and destroy it.
It's in enough legends then for most people to accept they were real and also they were bad.

Weren't they made of Necrodermis? IIRC the Salamanders Primarch fights some sort of beast made of living metal. They were not just combat models as they served mankind in every way, i assume the Combat models got tired of killing each other for the sake of human civil war and told the others to join in rebellion. Also the general mistrust of any sort of AI suggests even industrial robots rebelled hence Technical Servitors etc.

Definatly not Necrodermis. The Necrons weren't even awake at this point or if they were mankind had yet to realise.

The iron men are connected to the Necrons in some way or another. It's hinted that the STC was largely destroyed 'For a Reason' (whether this reason is the apathy it induced in mankind or something else is not explained admittedly) and that the mechanicus have some sort of shady connection to the Void Dragon. I am definitely not the only one to think that the stuff on (i was wrong Iron Hands not Salamanders) Ferrus Mannus is Necrodermis; it is in the Dornian Heresy and that guy knows his stuff.

*sigh*
Three things to clear up here:
1) Iron Men are not connected, whatsoever to the Necrons. The Void Dragon/Mechanicus connection has only ever been hinted at and probably will be knocked out when Necrons are revised.
2) The STC was "largely destroyed for a reason" in the one specific story it appeared in("First and Only" by Dan Abnett) because of the fact that had been on a Chaos tainted planet for hundreds of years and was corrupted beyond belief. Otherwise the STC was destroyed/purposely lost simply because of the fact that the AIs rebelled and started killing humans.
3)Finally: The Dornian Heresy isn't actual fluff, thus it means diddly in terms of actual canon.

The Horus Heresy series has done a little more than hint IMO, it makes it explicit that the Void Dragon is imprisoned on Mars and strongly implies he's had a lot to do with the Mechanicum's development.

Dornian Heresy is fanfic, it's a neat idea but is very clearly not based on the real 40k timeline.

The mechanicus came after STCs were created therefore an STC being linked with an Necron woudn't make sense.

I wasn't saying Dornian heresy is canon just that it's a pretty thorough guy that wrote it. Also it's wrong to dismiss necron influence because they weren't 'awake'. The robotic warriors weren't awake admittedly but.... The wrongest statement so far is 'Iron men are not connected whatsoever to the necrons' so are you the complete master of 40k canon? No... Unless you are, which i doubt... Alot of 40k is informed speculation they invite theories with veiled references, There are plenty of 'hints' nudging towards necron Influence on the dark age of technology. Just like the Fire Hawks MIGHT be the LOTD. Plus i am gonna go out on a limb and say that though the techno-monks iteration of the AM did not exist in the DAoT. Imperial industry has been based in Mars since i think when the first Interstellar Ships were built.

By proof i mean:
1)Mars has always been the center of Imperial Industry. Where did you read/hear that from?
2)What hints of possible Necron influence?
Also we don't know where the STCs were made or how so Necrons may or may not have been involved with them.
But we do know that the Iron Men were sentient AI machine constructs which Necrons cetainly aren't.

men of iron were machine destroyed because they rebelled against humans (think I robot with will smith) they thought they were superior, this is why imperium is forbidden to use artificial intelligence and use humans brains instead - ps - they are robots they can look like anything they want - but I do believe that necrons were influenced by the men of iron idea
here some pics from a graphic novel (They do look like necrons)
Automatically Appended Next Post: I am actually thinking (instead of imp blob) i am just gonna convert my necrons into old school robots and use that as an army of men of iron

Ok, on the Iron Hands and Ferrus thing
IA: Iron Hands
The most famous heroic story of Ferrus was his titanic battle against Asirnoth, the Great Silver Wyrm.
and
The Canticle describes the monstrous creature as having skin made of living metal that was impervious to harm.
and
His hands however were encased in the same living metal that the creature's skin was made of, a metal that was as flexible as flesh, as strong as the hardest ceramite.
It's possible that Asirnoth was a Tomb Guardian or a Necron Construct of sorts.
Regards to the Men of Iron being Necron influenced - I kinda think it's possible, although not Necron influenced.
From Mechanicum we have the Emperor of Mankind imprisoning the Void Dragon on Mars way before the Age of Strife. Now also from what Mechanicim tells us it's the dreams of the Void Dragon that have influenced the progression of the AdMech. Now, if the Void Dragon had some form of awareness in his imprisonment, possibly it was it's way to get revenge, it encouraged the AdMech to produce the Men of Iron and bring about the downfall of it's captors, by the sounds of it it nearly happened. I think there is to much coincidence between the Necrons and Men of Iron. Or now there is, before Mechanicum there wasn't much.
The only difference between the two is that the Men of Iron had AI and the Necrons still had some semblance of a soul, I guess at this time they did. 10,000 years before the Necrons of the current 40k date.

The STCs came before the AdMech though...
And the Iron Men didn't have the living metal that the Necrons do.

Hmm, as far as I was aware the STCs were created during the Golden Age of Technology by the early Mechanicum on Mars and then sent out to where ever they needed to go.
So Necrondermis wasn't available, they just made them out of what they had available to them. Iron I guess
