Hi,

I'm just getting back into the hobby after a long hiatus and I've decided I'm going to spend a lot more time on my models. I've come up with an idea for my potential IG army and I wanted some advice on how to go about creating their bases.

I wanted a baked desert base colored like reddish clay. Can anyone recommend a way of getting the baked desert effect? I could do it with green stuff but I think it would take a long while to do that for every base. Can anyone think of an easier way of doing it?

Any help would be appreciated.

You could try a crackle or antiquing medium available from a crafts store. That might do the job under a coat of paint...

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

I think that would get the look but be very fragile. Wouldn't the crackled bits of paint chip off real easily?

Greenstuff on one base, make a green stuff mold, and just mold them as base toppers. (so not as thick as the entire base etc)

After trying to figure out how to do this in an easy way- I tried this:

Its a 'faux' finish, painted on with 3 colors. It took about 2 minutes, which is slower than painting a textured base- but since it takes about 5-10 minutes to make a textured base- it still works out as being faster

Thank you for the suggestions. The prefab ones are definitely nice and the painting tip is a cheap alternative.

One quick question about the green stuff mold. The method would be to make a green stuff base, wait for it to dry, then press green stuff into it and take it off and let it harden into a mold for all my other bases? Or is it some other way?

I've got an idea, I wonder if you made a super salty water solution and poured it onto the base and maybe you could get it to crystallize onto the base.

this is seriously easy.

1.) put down a thin coat of GS on the base (before you put a model on it, obviously).

2.) make lines in the GS with a toothpick.

3.) rough it up slightly with sandpaper (optional).

GW did a cracked desert bike base motif using this method, and it looks great, and is really easy.
