Subject: The Furian Imperial Guard. Background.

This being my second guard army, I'll need some fluff for them. I haven't quite finished the fluff of my first army, but I lost interest in that army. So I started a new Guard army, using the Catachan as a basis modelwise, and Gaunts ghosts fluff wise as basis. Here's the fluff. First upis something about the world Furian. (This is not yet related to the Guard, The war and all, just the culture and the planet and its fauna and flora.) Furith. A lush forestworld found near the end of the Centaurus Arm. The Furith system is a very small one. It only contains Furith itself, its sun and its moon. At the border of the system lays a giant ball of gas. The Septimo Gas Cloud was discovered by a Magus Biolog vessal. They took the gas planet as a hospitable planet, and took the gas around the planet as just a cloud blanket. Magus Bio Septimo sent a landing vessal to explore the expected surface of the orb of gas. The landing craft did not find a planet in the orb, but they learned that the Gas cloud was the breading habitat of giant creatures appearing to swim around in the gas as it was water. They named the yet unrecorded animal species as Furith void-Whale. The creatures appeared to be friendly, and so the Magus Biolog vessel did not see it fit to erradicate the animal species. Those first recordings were made in the time Furith was first colonized in the 38th millenium, and up to now - the 41st millenium - The Void-Whale is still at large. As mentioned above, Furith was settled near the end of the 38th Millenium, after Magus Biolog Septimo declared the planet as hostpitable. In the opening years of the colonization, the colonist registerd many unknown animals to the Magus Biolog, who noted their existence and sent explorator craft down to surface to investigate. After exploring the fauna and flora of Furith, The magus did not declare Furith as a death world, as was first anticipated. Instead, Furith was declared peacefull and easy to live off the land. The first settlement was called New Hope, but now, in the 41st Millenium, it has grown to be Furith's capitol city. Called Furian Primus, it became the biggest and important site in both a politic way and trade way. After the first settlement was built, more towns and vilages sprawled all over Furith. Living off the land, The Furians became hardy, and adapted to the surroundings. The Furian people became master hunters and marksmen. The large, livid forests of Furith made the colonist very good at tracking, scouting and just hiding in the woods. These skills must been learned in order to survive. Without these skills, the Furians would never find food when the harvests had gone bad. Furith developed, and in our present time - the 41st millelnium - Became a very Imperial Planet. The Imperial Church took care of that. Furith initially didn't hava a military at all. The population was far too small, and the Imperium did not require more then Furith's food stuffs. Furith's Food stuffs provided three more systems in close proximity to Furith enough food to feed a third of the planet. This is the reason why Regiments were not raised. There was no threat from alien forces, there wasn't even a trace of the archenemy. This remained like that, from the 38th to the greatest part of the 41st millenium. Untill now. A Tyranid Hive fleet was spotted near the Centaurus Arm. The Hivefleet was called Hivefleet Minotaur by Imperial Magos Biolog. Furith was obliged to raise five regiments for the Imperial Creed. The Furian's skill at woodlands made them an excelent choice for Light Infantry. The Furian 1st, 2nd and 3rd were shipped to the Alteon system, where HiveFleet Minotaur presence was suspected. ( Data log of The Alteon 3 campaign can be found at data link 45-N9-4504-A: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/327478.page ) The 4th Remained on the planet to safeguard Furith of Tyranid attack. The mass draft of Imperial citizens into the Guard made it so that Furith was left with too few men to form a PDF force, and still be able to produce food for the remaining people. Because Furith was left with so few people, the Imperial Church present on Furith Declared a divine law to the remaining people of Furith to re-populate. The Regiments were made up of two thousend men each. That made ten thousend able bodied troops for the Imperial Creed. For any other planet, this number of drafted troops would be insignificant. But this was not the case on Furith. The mass draft put a blow to the Planetary population. The Furian 5th boarded a ship of the Centaurus battlefleet. The Furian 5th joined hundreds of other Guard regiments boarded on the Massive fleet. These troops would be the Main thrust to attack the Tyranid hordes to drive them off any planet, or to defend a world against hivefleet Minotaur. The Furian 1st to 3rd are to be placed into the Crusade against this Tyranid Invasion, as soon as the invasion in the Alteon System was looked after. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Phwoow, this was long to type out. This is just a rough background, But I will go in details later. Feedback and help would be great.

Pretty good.
Dunno if there is anything i disagree with.
Though if the planet has a hive city then it's population would be rather large so maybe just change it to a large town or city instead.

No problem.
I do like it though it is reminiscent of the Tanith fluff but different enough to be well different.

wouldn't the people/regiment be known as furithians not furians, seeing as the planet's name is Furith not Furia.

IMO, I prefer Furians. For me it does not matter if the planet's called this way and its people the other.
Furians just sounds better then Furithians.

hehe no nothing to do with them. The name was inspired by Furya, that is. But mines a completely different planet. And besides, this is Warhammer 40K, not The chronicles of Riddick. This is a whole different galaxy, in a completely different time.

here comes the second part.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Politics
Furith is now ruled by a planetary Governor, But when Furith was first settled, the planet was ruled over by an Imperial army General. The General accompanied the colonists from the orbital muster point to Furith itself. Planetary General Van Hessen ruled Furith the first eight years after it was settled. Before Van Hessen's death, he instated his Second man in command. Colonel Hopmark -Van Hessen's second man - ruled Furith for the next twenty three years, and after he died, he declared his son as planetary governor. from this day on, Family Hopmark ruled Furith for the next two Millenia untill the Hopmark bloodline ended with the last son. On the last governor's death bed, he ordered a new planetary rule. Furith would be ruled by an elected count. These new rulers were called Elector Count's and they ruled from that day -40th millenium- to this day - 41st Millenium - .
An Elecor Count is chosen after each ten years. Because of this, no Count could declare himself Tyrant of Furith. Sure, this was a planetary decree, instated by the last Hopmark, but this didn't meant Counts did not try to have planetary power for more than ten years. This was the case with Count Harko. at the end of his ten year governor-ship, he assasinated the already voted for count who would rule Furith for the next term. The Planetary Militia got word from this, and sent a Militia squad to eliminate the rebel Count.
The Elector Count gets chosen from a court of counts. After an Elector count finished his carreer as planetary Governor, He gets the option to retire, or to vote for the next Elector count, together with the other elders.
This day, it is the second year of Elector Count Marius. Under Marius, The Furians lived peacfully and prosperous. Count Marius wanted to object against the mass draft ordered by the Imperial Creed. But eventually, the Imperial church of Furith convinced him other wise, for this was borderline behaviour to heresy.

hehehe.
But in past Millenia, the Imperial Guard were called the Imperial Army. When you read a lot of black library books, including the horus heresy ones, you lear a lot of things.

I know,i had the luck to read one of those very old books (rogue trader,1/2nd whatever edition)
In that book it was called the Imperial army, but that was before horus heresy, because it was then splitted into imperial navy and gaurd,to prevebt
rebbelions; So if Furith was colonised by somebody of the imperial army, was it collonised during or before horus heresy.
confusing... AGAIN!
BTW nice to see you stick in my tyranid fleet!

The draft.
A year ago, Ordo Xeno Inquisitor Valos came to Furith with an Imperial Decree, ordering the consription of ten thousend Guardsmen, devided into five regiments of two thousend men. Elector Count Marius held a council, holding a vote against the conscription. Marius took it his duty to protect his people, and he put forward a good objection against the draft. Because Furith was a small agricultural world, the planet would be better of with its people on the planet, fueling the crusade against the tyranid invasion with food stuffs. This was voted for, and accepted.
Inquistitor Valos warned him against holding a vote. Valos was an Inquisitor Lord, and when the ruling class of Furith voted against the draft, Valos would simply execute Marius on collaborating with Xenos, and then take control of Furith. At first Marius was not turned down by this. Only with council from the Imperial Church would Marius listen. The vote was turned down, and the furians would be drafted. Marius knew this would be a blow to Furith's poppulation.
Inquisitor Valos recognised the Furians expertise in woodland, and decided to take advantage of it. Valos' retinue consisted of Imperial Veterans in woodland warfare. Recruits would be trained by these veterans, and commanding officers would be trained by Valos himself. Valos made sure the Furians everything they needed to know about the Tyranids.
Expeditions showed that the Hive Fleet was still a way off. This would give the Furians enough time for training. The boot camp took a year to complete. And at the end, the Furians were experts in woodland warfare. The drill sergeants, who came with Valos, stepped down, and started rasining militias, giving them basic training, enough to defend their planet.
