Just figured I would share. This is a tabletop model I am working on and is my absolute first attempt at Object Source Lighting (OSL). The whole model has a lot of room for improvement, that I know. I need to tidy up some lines and really work on the bone color a lot. Tomorrow I will be doing up the base and hopefully this will win the LGS best-painted tank for our Tanksgiving event. Sadly, I am busting out two large commissions, so I can't make a ton of time for it, but I figured I would show folks what I can muster for OSL currently after posting all those links on other threads on that topic.

Definitely an excellent start here! The gems look really nice, and the DSL is very well done, especially on the face of the pilots. My only concern, and you touched on it a little, is the extreme highlight of grey just looks off, perhaps too extreme. Other than that, you've got a great start, and am looking forward to seeing it completed!

That looks great so far, I really like that glowing effect from the control pannel. Nice job.

Love the illuminating effect youve given to the panels and characters, very nice work! These pics will come in handy when I start my falcons!

Very nice.

Agreed about touching up the highlights however I would say that your directional work looks good.

Can we see it all together?

So, I am re-doing the black to be blended instead of hard-edged. I will post pics this weekend of it assembled and on the table at Tanksgiving and maybe sooner, if able.

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

I have to say that is some nice highlighting even before the lighting effect.

So, I finished it off for the most part. Going to go in and re-address the bone stripe on the nose, as it looks off still. Otherwise, I am loathe to fiddle with it too much more. The lighting effects inside practically disappeared under the canopy, but such is life. Overall, I am hoping it does well in the painting competition. For as little time as I sank into it, I won't be hurt if I don't win - after all, commissions come first, which is what I have been focused on.

Anyhow, what does Dakka think?

its a great job. I can still see the interior cockpit glow without much of a problem. I think the end result turned out well. I definately agree with touching up the bone stripe. Are you going to paint the canopy frame or leave it as is? The model looks great, best of luck in the competition!

Hmm. Good question about the canopy frame. Somehow, I forgot about it entirely! I will go ahead and paint it black tomorrow.

Here is the final shot of it! It is for sale if anyone happens to want it. $40 + S&H seems fair.

What do you guys think? I know its only one shot, but I think it was a fun test in OSL. The rest of the shtos didn't come out too hot, I need a better camera and a proper light-box. Nevertheless, I know now that I am not a fan of painting Eldar.

I think it looks great. The black looks a bit flat, but other than that, it looks very nice.

I think the exaggerated glow on the driver worked in your favor, as it allows the effect to be noticed, even through the canopy. I think the glow may be a little too stark on the gunner's face, though. It looks perfect in the first set of finished pics, but a bit too extreme in the final set, with the starker white lighting. If this were your fifth attempt at OSL, instead of your first, I'd still classify this as "initial experimentation." If this is what you get by messing around with a new technique, you'll be blowing minds after you fiddle with your method a bit.

Thanks! I plan on getting OSL down a bit better and I just got myself an airbrush, so I want to see if that helps out some for larger areas, such as searchlights.

For any Dakka member who wants to buy it this Vyper, $30 + S&H. Just PM me.

Yea, I am thinking I will tone it down when I get some time between commission or if someone wants to buy it.
