Within this Ranking you will find multiple infuriating internet memes, opinionated and biased arguments, and beat downs on some of your favourite races. This thread is by no means for the faint hearted. In this thread you will also find stress release, and a place to biatch ( lol 11 year old word ) about your most hated fluff. You cannot troll this thread, you can only speak your opinion, for we are all equal here ...although thats no challenge to try and troll..ANYWAY
In my short time on dakka, I have learnt so much, dakka taught me most of everything I know about 40k tactics and strategies. I hope that I have made a name for myself as a helpful member. I have had my run-ins with other members, as all forum users do, but I hope no one feels that this thread is misplaced here and I am undeserving to write it. It is my hope that this thread survives to see all the codex’s ranked, so please comment on your opinion, and don’t be afraid to place bets
[Note I WILL be ranking the different space marine codexes, as some of them have very decent fluff. Also note that because of this, around 35% of all rankings will be imperial, as their are so many imperial codexes. Please excuse this.]
I thought it would be a good idea to rank the codexes fluff, as no one else seems to have done it, SO lets kick it off!
So, In 16th ( I hope its 16) place:
TWILIGHT 40,000 - THE BLOOD ANGELS
Now I havnt been in the hobby for all that long, I came in in 4th edition, when blood angels were a respectable backwater race, much like the dark angels, and they were mostly left alone. The few times I did see them, the players were mature and the codex was fair. But lets not get hung up on rules here, nor excuse current sins with past virtues.
Those who have read the excerpt on the Sanguinor in the Blood Angels codex will know what I’m talking about here. The superman flyhappy golden dude flew down and Sparta kicked the nastybad bloodthirster HURR! Their fluff is ridiculous, they actually HAVE vampire teeth! Their canines literally grow into vampire teeth!
Sure, they have some nice fluff, like how they turn their initiates into space marines. Thats alright, but there so much thats wrong. So we have established the sanguinor has gay fluff, but what about mephiston?
He gets trapped under a rock for a couple days, and becomes super man more or less. He kills some orks, So he must be awesome, and then he becomes invincible...yeah.
Astorath? So he HAS got an axe, so he has a right to be able to beat other space marines (See: Space Wolf Codex) but ...ok we will start from the start with this guy.
He goes around executing all the death company who cannot be controlled, but arent these DC like...uber unkillable apart from decapitation and super insane? And dont half of them fight him? sometimes in packs of 4 or 5? And did I just read that he has to fly around the entire galaxy, going to different battlefields and executing all the death company? Couple problems here: He would instantly get beat down by the death company who did attack him, and he cant be at every single battle with death company!
Ok so I might be applying logic to 40k right? Fair enough, but we all know blood angels have a bit of an odd codex fluff wise. EDIT: I was unaware of the necron bromance, but indeed, there is such a thing! How heretical.
So thats 16, What do you think 15 is?
(If anyone can give me a clue to why the pictures arent working it would be greatly appreciated)

I've really only read the codex fluff from the codex me and close friends own, so I'm no expert. BUT I have heard the most complaints about Bllod Angel's fluff out of all of the codexes. So, I agree with you there.
My guess? Space Wolf. Since everything is named wolf-something, or something-worlf, they ride big wolves into firefirght, and are basicly 1-way wearwolves.

I'm guessing wolves, because of their naming scheme and over abundance of wolves. Haven't really read much fluff other than the various space marines, eldar and Imperial Guard.

In The Far Future, Their Is Only Puppies. Woof Woof.
Space wolves. Ahh space wolves. Space wolf wolfmarines are a somewolf..I mean a somewhat wolfboring wolf-race of wolves. Not only are they wolfboring, but they are also the lamest idea I have ever seen in any video or tabletop game. Ever. Theres just so much wrong here, its not even funny. They used to focus more on the hearty space vikings with big wolfbeards and even bigger wolfbeers, but now its more...wolfy.
As you can see, I am emphasising on the huge overuse of the word wolf in their codex. The blood angels do not trail far behind, but at least they use the psuedo-latin translation for blood now and then, Sanguine. You know what the latin translation for wolf is? Lupus. How weird. (For all you harry potter fans, doesnt that ruin your views on JK Rowlings creativity! Professer "Lupin"?). Now we cant really walk around with Lupuslords and Fenrisian Lupus's...but what space wolves could do is at least take a small look at the codex and realise you could just call them a captain?
So why did Space Wolves beat Blood Angels? Because space wolves dont have an overabundance of THE SPACE WOLF FLEW INTO THE SKY AND WOLVES SHINED OUT OF HIS EYES AND ATE THE DAEMONS AND CLEANSED THE WORLD THEN MATED MAKING MORE BABY WOLVES WHO FLEW INTO THE SUN AND MADE A MASSIVE SHADOW OF A WOLF AND IT SHINED INTO TERRA AND THE EMPEROR CRIED A TEAR OF MANLINESS HURR!!! that the BA codex seems to have.
And Is it not heresy to be kind of mutated so your so wolflike? Dont some space wolves kinda go feral and sniff around and poo everywhere? One of my friends described them as "Me smell enemy, me fight!" which is quite a nice example of how I feel about them. Their an army of dogs, and this technique of creating a race and lack of creativity is very outdated and dissapointing. For GW to update them is quite horrible in my eyes, other races deserve it, but hey, SW are space marines, so they have to live, right? In all honesty, Id like to see the SW go the way of the squats *Dodges thrown daemonhammer*, more so than even the blood angels.
Im not even going to comment on their army tabletop wise, those psykers are TFG. So I could continue, but we all know deep down the space wolves had it coming, and we all see the reasons why. Its anyones guess as to whats next.

With latin, the root word is most important. canities is the root for grey and canis is the root for dog. Similar but different words.

I just wanted you, my good man, to edit the first post, as you continue to add more codexes. If this thread comes even close to that of Melissa (long thread is looooooong), it is going to be a big pain in the ass to search for your new entries. If the whole ranking is in the first post, on the first page it is much easier to find updates, read and compare.
So, to sum up:
When you add new codex - write a new post, but also edit your first one. This will make one good clean read in the end.
Thanks in advance. Hugs and kisses. Yours truly. etc. etc...

I wouldnt want to cover everything in the codex, and fluff wise, I know deep striking land raiders to be rather realistic. See, in the grey knight inquisiiton daemonhunt mod for dawn of war, thunderhawk carriers drop landraiders off (they land then drop them obviously) directly onto the battlefield. It is a legit tactic IRL.
TWC I have not actually read up on enough, I have not fully studied each codex. I have of course read them all, but I have not read each unit entry nor have I memorised all of them.
The next race is going to be a bit of a surprise I think

I don't see what wrong with BA units kicking ass in their own codex. Every codex overplays how awesome they are anyway.
Case and point, read the Tau and Imperial accounts of Nimbosa or Damocles. So I have to ask, do you just not like heroics? I kind of like over the top awesome.
I also don't see how its worse than Wolfy Wolfborn with his wolf tooth necklace, wolf armour and wolf claws riding a giant wolf.

What's wrong with BA? They have a bloody bromance with a xeno race. If any other servant of the imperium even thought about talking to a xeno, they'd be executed instantly for heresy. But apparently not the Blood Angels. That's just ridiculous.

It was an alliance of convenience, as in, "there's a giant bunch of bugs and if we don't stop fighiting each other we're all going to die." Ask Creed about it sometime, he did it with Eldrad.

I have read it, it was over the top. But its space marines, and entire faction of over the top awesome. If you want realism play Imperial Guard (which I do as well). When I play space marines and read their fluff I don't want to see "1000000 marines died to try to kill a single daemon" I want to see a a hero come down and kick its ass like an action hero.

(Note: This is a picture of blood angels and daemons fighting for who's better, the daemon wins)
Chaos Daemons – Seriously, wtf!
Ok, I have no idea who wrote this codex, but they definitely aren’t human. No amount of depression and drugs could possibly come close to thinking up what this codex is. Sure, its 40k, but it gives me a headache when I read it! So the warp is meant to make no sense right? Don’t put it into words then! And DON’T make a codex out of it!
Now before you say "WHAT! CHAOS DAEMONS HAVE NICE FLUFF!" I must say that I bitterly hate them. They are required for one of my favorites to exist ( GK) so I grudgingly accept them into 40k.
Their concept is awesome. Theirs no doubt about it, and it makes sense to have them in 40k. Im not denying them as a good race, but the fluff within their codex is weird as! Not only, just like most of the 5th edition races, are they written in such a way that they are portrayed as entirely unstoppable and completely contradict other codexes in how super awesome they are. For instance, in the imperial guard codex, it is written that the valhallans managed to stage a defence against daemons within a fortress. This is believable, but it is unlikely that a regiment of Imperial Guardsmen will hold out against a horde of daemons. Its a fair thing to say that the guard didnt have much of a chance. But the daemons codex would have you believe that daemons would simply be able to spawn within the fortress, fall out of the sky, the air would turn to fire and the ground would constantly change, like in a bad dream. Because of this thinking, no race can ever stage a successful offensive or defensive against them fluff wise, they just come out of their ears! Any race who does make any sense of battle with them is defying the chaos daemon fluff, and I blame this on the written fluff in the codex.
Heres a little excerpt so you can have a headache too.
Beyond the boundaries of physical space, unrestricted by time or causality, there is a plane utterly incomprehensible to mortal minds. It lies on the other side of dreams and nightmares, created without form or structure. It exists far outside imagination; an impossible abstraction only made real by a metaphor. It is composed of love and hate, fear and hope, ambition and despair, and yet is an uncaring, emotionless void. It is constantly reborn but has never changed, eternally shifting though static. No natural, preternatural or supernatural sense can see, smell or hear it, except through illusory analogues that drive men insane. It is a place where gods thrive in constant war, fighting over the raw stuff of anti-creation that birthed them.
This is a good way of portraying the chaos daemons thinking. None.
Although, why did the chaos daemons not lose you ask? Because, once again they are unrealistic, but their also supposed to be. Its just sad that the unrealism isnt realistic enough to fit into fluff with the other codexes properly. Chaos daemons truly are an endless horde, so how can they be outmatched? There is the biggest problem. They cant technically fluffily be outmatched. You cannot beat them. Every human MUST die (or become a grey knight) to stop the daemons.
ewy gooey.

heroics is great, as long as it's semi-realistic. For instance, reading about mephiston killing everything he looks at (in game) or sanguinor slaughtering a bloodthirster with ease, is nowhere near as thrilling as reading about someone else barely killing something far stronger than them.
