Orks are unique in that they are all unique. No two boyz are the same, no two mobs are the same, no two vehicles are the same, and no two Waaagh!!s should be the same. Despite that, due to the limitations imposed by Codices and pre-packaged models, it's actually rather common to find two or more people with nearly identical armies.

That just seems rather silly to me.

So, here's what I propose: Go back to (what was it, Second? Third?) a prior edition's rule-type, and make it possible, and much easier, to have an entirely unique army, both in look and in loadout. Make it A la carte. Bosses, Nobz, Boyz and Grotz cost a certain amount, and then every single bit of wargear, from Choppas to Shokk attak gunz have a price. To that end, I've gone through the Codex, Orks, and figured on prices for various bitz of wargear, and various rankz and unitz, and hopefully come up with a list that's inclusive, not overpriced, but not underpriced either, and is entirely equal to the current codex without being so rigid.

(I'm not certain if the points costs would be allowed or not, since they're technically Codex material, so I won't put anything that's the same as in the codex. If there's any problems, I'll remove all points)

Unitz:

grot - 2 pts per model

Boy - 5 pts per model

Nob - 19 pts per model

Basic HQ (big mek equivalent stats) - 30 pts

Boss (warboss equivalent) - 58 pts

Wierdboy - same as book

Wargear:

Big choppa, ammo runt, Waaagh!! Banner, stikkbombs, rokkit launcha, grot followa', cybork, power klaw, attack squig, kombi-weapon, and bosspole are all same cost as in book.

Twin-linked weapon - +5 pts per 2 shots of base weapon, rounded up. (so an assault 1 weapon would be +5 pts twin linked, and a Heavy 3 would be +10 pts to twin link.

Slugga&Choppa combo - 1 Shoota - 1 Grot Blasta - 1

Mega Armor(HQ/Boss/Weirdboy) same as in book; Mega Armour(Nob) - 20 pts; Boyz and Grotz can't have Mega-armour. This Mega Armour does not include any weapons, it only confers the 2+ save and the Slow and Purposeful USR

Warbike(HQ/Boss/Weirdboy/Nob) same as in book; Warbike(Boy) - 19 pts; Grotz can't have Warbikes

'Eavy Armour(HQ/Boss/Weirdboy) - 6 pts; all others, same as book. Grotz can't have 'Eavy Armour.

Burna, Kustom Mega Blaster, Deffgun, Grot Prod or 'Urty Syringe(HQ/Boss/Weirdboy) - same as book cost of Burna; B,KMB,D,GP,US(Nob) - 14 pts; B,KMB,D,GP(boy) - 9 pts

Mek's Tools, Tankbusta bombs, Kamaflaj (kommando rules), Grabba stick, Gitfinda - 4

Rokkit Pack(HQ/Boss/Weirdboy) - 10; Rokkit Pack(Nob) - 7; Rokkit Pack(boy) - 5

Snazzgun - 10

Dok's Tools - 21

Warbuggy - 8; needs a Driver and a Gunner

Deff Copta(HQ/Boss/Weirdboy) - 58; (nob) - 38; (boy) - 29

Deff Dred(HQ/Boss/Weirdboy) - 80; Deff Dred(Boy/Nob) - 69

Killa Kan(Grot) - 32

Kannon - 14; needs 2 crew

Lobba - 21; needs 2 crew

Zzap gun - 26; needs 2 crew

All wargear without a 'new' cost was figgured out from the first entry in the Codex, but is not restricted to that character type.

Any model may take as much wargear as the player wants, but it must be Wysiwyg, and the model may not use more than one gun per turn, or more close-combat weapons than they have arms.

Yes, it is possible for a couple of Orks to take a Kannon, but not suggested, as it would use their BS.

Anycase, tell me what you think, questions, comments, etc.

So way more book keeping to end up with the same thing I feild now. No thanks, they just need to update the Codex with the new style of army building. Saying that I only see clone Ork armys when people are using netlists or tournaments builds.

Peter: As we all know, Christmas is that mystical time of year when the ghost of Jesus rises from the grave to feast on the flesh of the living! So we all sing Christmas Carols to lull him back to sleep.
Bob: Outrageous, How dare he say such blasphemy. I've got to do something.
Man #1: Bob, there's nothing you can do.
Bob: Well, I guess I'll just have to develop a sense of humor.

I suppose that's true enough. I figired I'd just put this out there for those that do want to do the fancy finicky stuff. I know I'm going to be fielding a codex-built army, but I figured this'd be fun for fluffy armies, like how a friend of mine would love to have an Ork army using nothing but flame weapons.

This just seems like too much work. That said, I do come from a background of playing Full Thrust using only custom designs taken from the design rules in the ruleset, which is a giant monster of a spreadsheet. I find 40k was never intended to be broken down into constituent parts (like Full Thrust, or even Firestorm Armada to a certain degree), and trying to do so would only invite madness. I don't know the Ork codex by heart, but this seems mostly valid, just too much work for what the codex essentially provides.

Well, aside from the Hq choice, of course.

But yeah. Then again, a Grot Tide is already a thing people do- the weakness is that the Grots generally don't have access to high enough firepower (aside from Killa Kanz, of course, but you pay for those) to deal with, say, a Termie squad on an objective. And Grotz are a fearful lot- not the best leadership, no Mob Rule... Even a Tac squad can do enough damage in a round that the mob of grots might just run.

You realize this thread is three years old right?

To be fair I (the original creator) did link to it.

And I never did hold to the idea that threads should be buried after a certain time. Thread Necromancy keeps forums from getting cluttered, rather than causing confusion.

@ Lemartes12: Darn, way to 3 year necro.

As for the Orks, I think it would be too complicated.
