Subject: Need help putting together a SM List - Droppods and support units

Hi all,
I dont post much on here but ive really got back into 40k in a big way.
Im looking to put together a 1500pt list to take to my local GW on their games night. I only really have 1 or 2 mates who play so wanna try myself against some new players.
Im looking to make a list out of the stuff i have and utilising a set of tactics i have conjured up. What im after is really som advice or guidance on units that would work well and maybe some deviations to my tactics.
Tactics:
The idea is to give myself a level of alpha strike while also supporting it with other units. I want to drop pod in 1 or 2 units right into the heart of the enemy, these will be special weapons teams loaded with melta-tastiness. These will be supoorted by scout bikes and scout snipers..with the option of some more scouts if i fancy it in the list. the next thing im thinking of supporting that strike with is a squad of 5 tactical terminators and a librarian with gate. The terminators and libby set up on my side of the board...then when i alpha strike in with my marines i use the gate to teleport my terminators over to assist. Hopefuly they will be able to use the locator beacons but if not oh well.
Thats pretty much the alpha strike part. This will occupy their forces and ill use this time to move up some units to capture objectives or just set up defensive points. I was thinking of prob a 10 man tac squad in rhino, 6 mand tac or devs in razor and a pred.
So that the general idea. I really like lysander so am thinking id attach him to the terms and libby. Bolter drill is nice and he can always break off and charge in if needs be. They will protect other more fragile units by teleporting all over the board.
Ok so here is a very rough list. I havent even worked out the points but its just to give a general idea.
Lysander
Librarian w Gate
5 tactical Terms w AC or Missiles
Command squad w apoth, 2 plasmas, 2 meltas, 4 storm shields, drop pod
3 scout bikes w meltas and locator beacons
8 scouts w snipers, missile Launcher and telion
10man tac w MM, Melta, combimelta and PF, rhino
6 man tac or devs w razorback (TL HB)
Predator
Is there anywhere where the list falls down?
What would you recommend adding/removing?
Here are the models i have currently, can buy a few bits if needed.
Captains, Chapter master, birarian, chaplain (power armour)
Lysander, librarian (term armour)
5 tac terms, 5 ass terms (LC, 1 TH/SS)
command squad, champion, apoyth, standard, 2 plasma gunners + SS, 2meltas + SS
2 x 10 man tacs (meltas, flamer, MM, all sarges w PF)
5 man dev - 3xML,1xLC
5 man dev - 3xHB,1xPC
10 man ass squad, 2 flamers
Pred
razorback
rhino
drop pod
3 scout bikeers
1 captain on bike
dreadnought, many arms
techmarine
8 scout snipers
telion
10 scouts w BP, CCW, ML, PF
think thats it. Should i take 3 drop pods in this list? tactics? advice?
Sorry for the wall of text, hopefully this will inspire some good discussion, thanks!

Firstly, this sort of posts belong in the Army List forum. Second, if you want an alpha strike list, Shrike is the best way to do it. Also, Sternguard with combi meltas in a drop pod. Third, Scout bikers can't have meltas, except for the sergeant who can have a combi-melta. Fourth... The list is all over the place. Yes, I understand you want some shooty support elements for your alpha strikers, but you can go about it better. Finally, if you know you're writing a wall of text... Don't. Take the time to make something well formatted and pleasant to read, and you'll get much better advice.

Ok fair enough.
Wasnt sure if it was tactics or army lists as im not just posting an army list im asking for tactical advice.
By wall of text i meant alot of information, i didnt think it was particularly badly laid out but point taken.
Would you care to expand on how i could 'go about it better' as thats effectively what im asking. I realise sternguard vets are great in a drop pod but currently i dont have any. im in the process of conveting some but its not a quick process. Hence why i posted the models i have. Im not asking for something incredibely competetive, just a list that allows me to experiment with this idea.
Thankyou for your feedback.

If your keeping with the Lysander+Libby Pod List I might suggest the following;
Lysander 200pts
Librarian w/ Nullzone+GoI 100pts
Tac Squad 10x w/ PF, Combi-Melta, Melta, MM, Drop Pod 245pts
Tac Squad 10x w/ PF, Combi-Melta, Melta, MM, Drop Pod 245pts
Terminators 10x w/ 2x Cyclone, 2x Chainfist 470pts
Iron Clad Dreadnought w/ HF, Drop Pod, Beacon 195pts
Iron Clad Dreadnought w/ HF, Drop Pod, Beacon 195pts
This should weigh in around 1650pts.
If you don't have enough drop pods, a trick i used to use is use Blank CD's as place holders and move the drop pod models between them to check LOS, I would let the opponent place the pod on the CD in the spirit of fairness. This should work for a friendly game at the FLGS. This list won't win any tourneys but can be fun to play.
As for you command squad in your original post, I would suggest running them with all 4 of the same weapon. Plasma and melta overlap in areas covered but it is best to go all the way in one direction. If you riding in a pod or rhino i would suggest the meltaguns. If you are on bikes, then I would suggest using the plasma.
Snipers in my experience are damn near impossible to remove at long range, but get bullied around by anything stronger than tau in CC. I find a tactical squad deployed in a rhino backfield to be a far superior objective holder that is capable of defending themselves should they be engaged in CC.
Scout bikes are fun, but if you only take 3 they are prone to getting shot off the board if you don't have first turn. (even with the 3+ coversave). If you choose to use them I would suggest running a full squad or near a full squad. For options I would look at the Power Fist, grenades and mines. The mines are good for mind games (you get an average of 6-7 hits, 3 wounds on MEQ, 1 kill on MEQ. Killing a 16pt model for 10pts isn't bad). Launching 6 S6 attacks into side or rear armor followed by a turn 1 assault on a tank is a good thing. But keep in mind that this unit will likely be killed in short order.
Hope this helped.

Thankyou very much for your response. thats some great feedback.
I took the list into my FLGS yesterday and played a guy's eldar army. Ive never played against eldar before so tactically im sure i was bad but still i got a bit trounced. I had some bad rolls, such as triple snake eyes when rolling 3 saves for terminators!! Lost 3 to guardian fire, was a joke! But woulve lost anyway.
Anyhow heres what happened and what i learned.
His psychic defense was horrible. I tried to use gate twice, failed the psychic test cos if him making me roll 3 dice. Got perils of the warp both times and tyhis killed my librarian (no inv save). Hence my terminators were stuck at the back and ididnt do a great deal.
Fearless sucks!!! I didnt realise about rolling armour saves for losing combat. That lost me a couple of wouncds with lysander and his terms. Id rather not be fearless tbh!!
Dont charge howling banshees with PF terminators!! ugh.
The command squad dropped in 1st turn and killed his transport very well. This meant the banshees were running up the board and if idve had more guns that wouldve been great.
My snipers performed very well. WIth tekion in a back building they pretty much destroyed a guardian squad in cover. And i actually forgot to bolster defences on their cover to give em 2+ otherwise they wouldve been better.
Scout bikes did their job, as a cheapish drop off unit. He only had 1 vehicle so couldnt melta bomb another.
My 5 man scout squad was poor, didnt really do much.
Lysander wasnt great. Gt killed by some eldar special character.
Overall killing the parts of his army was a nightmare, he had 2 psykers so rerolls all over the place on armour saves and wounds.
Yes my list was poor but the drop command squad worked well. Could be better if they were stermguard but the invulns kept them alive well until they got charged by banshees.

Yep but it didnt really apply. The only other HTH was a squad of marines and guardians. Which i won convincingly.
I dont like the new (for me!) fearless.

Lysander gives the 'stubborn' rule through his chapter tactics, not fearless, thats chaplains.Maybe you should look into some more scout bikes and bulk out the ccw scouts to a full unit,31 attacks on the charge is going to cause a headache at I4 or lower, even going second if enough survive. It may have been better to target the banshees with telion and your snipers, rather than the guardians. But thats just my 2 cents, for what its worth.

I used a slightly different list in a battle against orks on saturday. It worked pretty well and i just wanted to share it:
Tigurius
5x Tactical Terminators, Assault Cannon
10 tac marines w MM, Melta, PF, combi melta + Rhino
10 tac marines w Flamer, HB, PF, Storm Bolter + Rhino
8 scout snipers w ML and Telion
3 scout bikes w Locator Beacon
Dreadnaught w Heavy Flamer + Drop Pod
5 Assault marines w 2 flamers
I used the bikes to get close to his left flank which had zzap guns and a big mob of flash gits. He got 1st turn, i scouted the bikes a bit closer but out of los.
My 1st turn i moved the bikes up to the zzap guns and drop pod assaulted the dreadnaught in. He flamed the zzap guns off the table, next turn he managed to assault the flash gits and then held them in assault all game until they ran away on the 5th turn. He had nothing in the squad or close by that could kill the dread in HTH.
The list worked well and i am happy with it, against orks anyway. The flamers just rip through orks. Scouts gopt assaulted early but performed well. Probably my best unit in the last 4 games ive played.
Tigurius was an absolute beast. the orks had a looted LR Crusader, we've no idea if thats legal but it made up the points. I got a few curse of machine spirits off on it which greatly diminished its shooting. 3 psychic powers a turn is v nice, especially when you have all 3 to choose from. Gate, avenger then Curse...mmm.
In the end he died from perils of the warp but not until 5th turn, using 3 powers a turn thats not bad going rly.
Terminators were poor, as they have been every time so that prob what id change about the list...a few speeders or vindi's or pred's...not sure.
Assault marines flamed alot of orks, being only 5 strong meant i had to hide them a bit but they jumped out and got some good flaming in.
Tac squads worked ok, the melta one put the hurt on the LR. the other tac squad got all but annhihlated in HTH in trun 6 by orks butmanaged to JUST contest the objective..the sergeant who refused to run!
Scout bikes do their job of delivering accurate drop pods but never really pack much of a punch firepower wise. Am contemplating fitting the grenade launchers but i dont want them to be an expensive unit.
thank you for reading.
