I'm new to space pups and wondered what do you guys take for your HQ and what builds do you use?

Personally, I'm leaning towards Bjorn because:

A) He is called Bjorn
B) Dreadnought general rolls off the tongue nicely

IMO, that's tactically sound...

Rune priest is always nice. Good psychic defense, cheap and has a few good psychic powers. Living lightning is great against light vehicles and infantry, while Jaws of the World Wolf is handy for tyranids, Tau and Imperial Guard. I usually stick him in a drop pod when facing those armies and just destroy whatever looks easiest (broadsides, tyranofex, heavy weapon teams, etc).

Bjorn is pretty cool, especially for first-turn shennanigans and keeping Long Fangs around with his Saga of Majesty. I think he has a BS of 6(?) so if you give him a plasma cannon he will pretty much never scatter. The only issue is he's pretty expensive for what he does.

The vast majority of people I know who play SW (I don't play them myself) take a mixture of Rune Priests and Wolf Lords, the former of which always has Chooser of the Slain and the latter of which is kitted out to a rediculous degree (hitting the 200+ mark is fairly easy). Thunderwolf mounts are a favourite for Wolf Lords as well.

As for special characters...some people take Logan to run an all-Wolf Guard army and some people take Njal in replacement of their usual Rune Priest.

The HQ choices in SW are pretty damn amazing, and having upto 4 of them is brutal!

one of my buddies runs wolves.

he's had pretty good success running wolf guard battle leaders, on a wolf, with a frost blade or power fist, escorted by fenrisian wolves to soak shooting wounds.
is it a great idea? probably not, but it is a pretty cheap and delivery of /alot/ of S10 power fist attacks or S6 power weapon attacks.

Wolf priests are awsome just like everyone else's chaplins...but are much more situational than a Lord or Rune Priest.

SW HQ choices are pretty simple. Its either you:

Play big by getting named characters or wolf lords in thunderwolf mounts. Or play cheap and stick with runepriests and wolf priests.

Runepriests usually stay with long fangs providing Ld 10, and that hax psychic hood. On the other hand, you can opt to bring along a Wolf priest instead if you run an assault army.

Thunderwolflords are pretty much a no brainer. They usually form up with TWC, but make no mistake, the Thunderwolf lord can do well alone as long as you use him for countercharge, just bringing along some pups.

There are 2 kinds of Dakka members: People who just think the game and people who actually play the game. Which one are you?
