So, I'm just curious from the necrons being considered the worst codex in 40K right now, is there any way to make them good? (Run them well). Any good list setups, tactics, etc.

From what I've read/heard:

-Take plenty of Warriors because of Phase Out.
-Lord w/ Resurrection Orb, or Deceiver.
-Lots and lots of Destroyers.
-Monoliths, Monoliths, Monoliths.
-Maybe a Scarab Wall.

But all of these things seem like it would take a massive amount of points just to get a good list up, is this true? (I know some of those are examples of different lists and are not played together.)

Any advice from you veteran Necron players out there?

Necrons really struggle right now. The main problem is how badly they were hit by combat resolution in 5th edition, and the weakening of glancing hits on the damage table.

Every successful list I have run for necrons in 5th had minimum warrior squads and then spammed either destroyers or immortals backed up by monoliths. For the most part, lists of this type comprise any of the players still trying to beat serious armies with Necrons.

So I've seen, the guy who plays them at my FLGS hasn't had much luck with them. I have actually seen that sort of list, how do you go about protecting your warriors and preventing a phase out?

that list won't work very well IMO.
not even a res orb... you need to drop some destroyers for a destroyer lord with orb then it might work.

Thanks for all the advice, I'm going to run a few games on Vassal to test out. I'll most likely post my list up here, so look out!

-Phase out. I never worry about phase out, I also haven't Phased out in a very long time. Over a year. I don't take plenty of warriors.
-Lord with Res Orb. Oh yeah, often as I can I will take two lords. C'tan, well I don't use special characters so I generally don't play against them either.
-I don't use Destroyers. They are good and all, but just not my style. Immortals are a superior substitute in my books when looking at the bigger picture.
-Monoliths, 1 is enough unless you have a strategy based around two.
-Scarabs they are good, but they aren't as good as Wraiths.

To put it simply, if you know how to use Wraiths properly, Necrons aren't so bad at all.

I agree with this completely. Minimal warriors, they aren't the work horses people glorify them to be. Some people love destroyers, I prefer Immortals.

This list is interesting. The warriors just hide I'm sure. The Monoliths push forward and just do as much damage as they can, while keeping Destroyers alive. The Deceiver just does as much trixy and annoying crap as he can. It's a nice list, but I always find the biggest weakness C'tan have is that you give your opponent the choice of fielding special characters himself. It wouldn't be very effective in Objective games but would be fun to see this in action. This is definitely not the only list a Necron player can run. It's a nice approach though.

Alright well my best advice to any Necron player, is get good with Wraiths. A Wraith wing to be specific. 6-9 Wraiths with a Destroyer-Lord / res orb is so incredibly effective in games. If you use them competently, not only do they have awesome CC ability and potentially unmatched resilience. They are extremely mobile. The combination of these 3 things makes a pretty potent kill team. Focus on killing Monstrous Creatures and other heavy infantry such as Terminators with these guys. Tanks with rear armor 10 will be pulled inside out. Stay away from walkers and small arms fire in large numbers. Taking 3 invulnerable saves from a Carnifex is easy. Taking 15 saves from lasguns isn't.

Here is a list I used last weekend in a small local tournament. 1500 points, I did very well in my games but didn't manage to win the tourny. However I did win a T-Shirt.

HQ:

Lord. Destroyer-Body, Res Orb, Phase Shifter.
Lord. Res Orb, Phylactery.

Elite:

7x Immortals
(foot Lord walks with these guys)

Troops:

13x Warriors
13x Warriors

Fast Attack:

3x Wraith
3x Wraith
(Destroyer-Lord flies with the Wraiths.)

Heavy Support:

Monolith

Man, The Necrons are very gimp right now....but they do have one advantage you should strive to embrace.

We'll be back.

With the Monolith you essentially get a second "We'll be back" roll, and two Monoliths means you can do it on a second unit. This will create a new Necron squad on the field. Also C'tan are totally sick.

Though something tells me the new Necron Codex is gonna make the Necrons something to fear again.

Armies:
4000+
2000
125 Khador
1500 Beastmen
