These pictures are of the Space Marine I painted in my first lesson at Games Workshop. It's the first miniature I've ever painted and pretty much one of the first things I've painted since I was in preschool.

I already got some opinions in my introduction thread about it, though I wanted some more opinions.

I'm also looking for tips on taking better pictures. If it helps my camera is a Casio Exilim EX-Z90.

Edit: Changed gallery URL to my DakkaDakka gallery.

Did you guys know Canada has a friggin desert?

Not bad for your first one although I do suggest that you base your miniatures. Its simple, and makes your miniatures look much better.

Also, uploading your images to dakka is much better for people with slow computers (like me!)

I just noticed that and uploaded it. I'll switch the link.

Also, I did do a base coat of blue using a blue foundation paint.

Thats good but i meant basing as in putting sand or flock to your miniatures base.
For example: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat470007a&prodId=prod1095398

moddeling sand also works awesome for other effects such as moss, shredded guts, burned flesh, etc.

Ah, ok, well it was a painting lesson so we didn't get to that, they told me how though.

Also, the one thing that bothers me is i think I put way too much wash in some places. >_<

Its always good to experiment with washes. What I do is that i give my models a limit to how much wash they get until it dries. If it looks like it needs more, i give it more; but if it looks good and nice, I stop.

I know. I sat there slowly doing the trim for the shoulder guards and freaked when I spilt over a bit. Then I realized I could just put more blue back over it and stopped worrying as much. XD

Arlington TX, but want to be back in Seattle WA

A good start. Its hard to judge or criticise first time miniatures because after all....your becoming acclimated to painting something that small, the feel of a brush is new to you, painting in general might be new to you, and sometimes it even takes your eyes a little while to adjust. I think after you have painted a few, I could better judge your work. For a first time job though, you did well. With more practice and learned techniques you will refine your painting and in a short while it should dramatically improve. I look foward to seeing more marines as you continue painting! From the photos it appears that the marine is a metallic blue....if thats the case, great effect!

HA HA YOU SUXOR -- GIVE UP AND GO HOME!

No, No, just kidding. For the first one ever that is very, very good. I refer specifically to the nice clean edging on the shoulder pads. I couldn't paint anything that small for a reaalllly looong time. The next thing easiest thing to do would be to use a wash to get a black line in the armor creases -- this will show off the detail of the sculpt. If you are up for it, I would also suggest picking a few more details with the gold -- I like to paint the rims on the exhaust nozzles (or whatever those are) of the backpack. Did you paint the chest eagle -- that helps a lot too. Eye lenses, cuff rims, yadda yadda.

Also, don't let anyone talk you into re-painting your first one. Keep it to compare against as you get better and better. You're off to a good start.

2k pts 3rd edition Wolves (no werewolves or clifford cavalry -- but I do have a nifty Leman Russ Exterminator shaped paperweight)
