In this blog I will show you my miniatures I am converting of the characters of the new Ultramarines the Movie!

I have a new tactical squad to serve as the basis of the Marines. I will then use greenstuff to create the ornaments on the characters, and paint many of the less 3d ornaments on after.

I have just completed Brother Verenor, he took me around three hours. The longest part was making the new stomach-part of his power armour, in which I had to clear out the original pipes and belt, and replace them with more power-armour 'folding-into-themselves-style' plates - like those of a woodlouse. I had to sculpt a skull over the aquila eagle's body on the bolter, a skull on the knee, and one on the forehead too. I had to create a main casing for the scope on the bolter, as the movie one variates from that in the boxed set. I created the centre of his power armoured stomach by cutting away a small marine pouch, and filling it thin. I also had to sculpt two pairs of wire-nodes onto the left of his chest

.

Look forward to seeing Carnak tomorrow! You should himo painted pretty soon! Thanks for the good comments, keep it up, this blog will be updated frequently. Does anyone know who carries the standard/banner dominantly when the marines land on Mithron?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Next up will be Carnak, as I just realized I had no Ultramarines Blue, so Verenor and Severus will wait. I found a pic from the movie, which I will use as a reference.

I have now completed Carnak. He took alot more work than Verenor, and I used plasticard to make the sheild-shaped knee pads and the wings of the Crozius. I had to reshape the wings on the back-mounted ornament with greenstuff. The cranium needed enlarging too. Like I say, I'm out of Ultramarines Blue 'till Wednesday-Friday,but the Imperial Fist Chaplain Carnak will be painted for tomorrow, expect progress pics tonight! I have included a microsoft word file with a pic of Carnak mid-movie I captured. I am thinking of making Brother Junor - the one with the flamer - next. I also added an empty shell flying out of Verenor's bolter, and a greenstuff muzzleflash. The skulls were done very easily - a tutorial will be upcoming! I undercoated Verenor with Regal Blue and Chaos Black.

Hi again, please drop a comment, or subscribe , you will not be bugged by loads of junk! I have been working on painting Verenor, as it turns out, Ultramarine Blue is discontinued!!? Instead I decided just to paint Verenor, using Mordian Blue instead. This paint method is supposed to give the colour/tone of power armour the Ultramarines wear in the movie, with black shades, and smooth coal-rubbed looking blue plates.

[Thumb - 100_1650.JPG]
1.) I firstly undercoated the muzzle-flash in white, the armour in Regal Blue, and the Bolter and Auspex in Chaos Black - why prime something blue black when you can just use dark blue, which will actually show in the final result!

[Thumb - 100_1654.JPG]
2.) I then layered on Mordian Blue, leaving Regal Blue in the recesses, in clean lines.

[Thumb - 100_1674.JPG]
3.) I next used a 1:3 mix of Astronomican grey and Mordian Blue - this could easily be missed out, and I doubt you will notice a lack in effect.

[Thumb - 100_1677.JPG]
4.) I finally layered/highlighted the model with 1:2 of the same previous mix, and then 1:1. I drybrushed the 1:2 over the highlights, especially on smooth areas, such as shoulder pads, where there are no sharp edges to highlight.

[Thumb - 100_1697.JPG]
5.) I then liberally applied a 1:1 mix of Asurmen Blue and Badab Black wash all over, soaking away excess wash if it pooled to much.

I'm pleased 2 know those paints were just out of stock - shining gold was 1 of them - which I cannot do without, although I don't think Ultramarine blue would have given them their movie-look! What is the name of the marine who wields the banner on Mithron?

Hello Guys,
The skull tutorial comes tonight, but for now, Verenor is all done! The base was mechrite red, then drybrushed with snakebite leather, desert yellow, then bleached bone. I edged the base at the end with snakebite to neaten it up.

The skull sculpting tutorial is finally here!
[Thumb - 100_1731.JPG]
1.) Make a rough circle and apply to chosen surface - I used a shoulder pad

[Thumb - 100_1740.JPG]
2.) Then sculpt two eye holes using the area between the point and diagonal side of an object like a cocktail stick, and also, just poke two nasal holes with the very point of the tool

[Thumb - 100_1744.JPG]
3.) Next cut two right angles out of the bottom sides of the skull

[Thumb - 100_1755.JPG]
4.) Finally, using a tool like a knife edge, engrave some vertical lines into the area at and under the angle-corners going downwards (you can also cut the base of the skull shorter to neaten the lines)

Very nice, crisp painting. My only suggestion is that you go round the edge of some of the freehand symbols with the blue to neaten some small patches up. Nice work on the shooting boltgun!

Junor is done!

Not much done on him, although I remade his bald head - it was an empire head with a helmet, repositioned his arms, and made him a new stomach like Verenor.

Verenor turned out quite nicely. I agree a little touch up on the freehand could help, but he still looks good. Junor looks good too. Are you gonna drill out a hole at the end of his flamer?

If you say I should - then I will! I 1stly thought of adding cotton wool for smokey-flame, but now I think I may just add a small promethium-ignition flame (blue and not the actual thrown-fire), plus the hole.

I just watched the movie again for the second time! It's easier to tell who's who, and see more deeper narratives, if you watch it more than once.

Looking good! Happy to help with the names, I had to watch it a couple of times to figure out who was who

I laughed at Juno's constant flaming to light up the rooms (No NV or Flashlights it seems)...you going to try a flame effect on him as well?

I thought the same about Junor, - it was funny as the flame only lasted for a few seconds, so there was no point! I may do a small smoky flame, not large enough to dominate it, but his flame bursts are rather iconic to him!

I added cotton wool to make one of Junor's 'desperate-to-light-up-the-room' flame bursts, and a small random bit of plastic remnant in the bottom of my bitz tin to make his flickering blue flame...

I haven't seen the movie yet, but this thread is proving quite the Advertisement. may have to go watch it now.
can you paint the cotton wool? I've never tried using it before..
great work!

A good point about painting the cotton wool - I may use watery paints and washes to colour it, as they will flow through it's fibres, and to stop the wetness creating weakness, I will probably paint it this way while propped-up. I could harden it with an outer brushing of super or pva glue ... Enjoy Christmas tomorrow guys! - prepare to welcome in the shed load of warhammer minis from your list!
