Hi all i've just got back into WFB & have choosen dark elves as i want an army that is good at both missle combat & magic without being an elf army as there are so many in my local area this is the first draft of the list & any pointers would be greatly received

the plan is to smash any block units in the opening turns with concentrated bolt thrower hits & crossbowmen to pepper any light cav also using any offensive magic i have at my dispossal then to hit the block units with the knights & chariot with dark riders protecting the flanks

At 2k, I would consider swapping out the lvl 1 and the master for a lvl 4, very useful for magic power and defense. Maybe a BSB if points are left over. Maybe swap one unit of dark riders for shades. Lower the cold ones to 6 knights, saved points can buff the crossbowmen. Maybe swap 2 RBT for a hydra.

First, 17 spearmen do just one thing: die. Combine those into one big unit and you will have something.

Sheilded RXBs should be fielded in units of 20, as backup combat blocks for the late-game charge. Units of 10 can get by without shields. So, either drop the shields or combine the units.

Second, Dark Riders took a hit in 8E and aren't as useful as they were in 7E. March blocking is unreliable, flank charges to negate ranks require two ranks (which means you need to start with three ranks to have two left at the time of impact), and their shooting isn't enough to accomplish a whole lot solo. But... within those limitations, they do some useful things still.

If you want to run a COKstar, drop the Banner of murder and make the master your BSB with the Hydra Banner. That willl beef them up significantly. Give COK the Banner of Cold Blood, if you must, to ensure they won't go stupid on the critical turn.

However, many have said that in 8E COC pack most of the punch of a unit of COK for less price and a smaller frontage. So... 4 COC? Perhaps put a master in one to enhance it's punch.

Reapers are rather lackluster. Hydras, on the other hand, still rock without being quite as unfriendly as once they were.


And a level 4 sorceress is well worth the points. When she gets rolling, there are few other casters in Warhammer that can match her. Give her the PoK and she has a pretty darn good chance of tanking a miscast to boot.

Just been 2 my local GW store & it turns out you can't even order chariots direct from nottingham now so will either have 2 go with the knights or wait 4 a plastic 1 to be released but 4 chariots & 2 hydras would be awful

The high elf Tiranoc chariot converts quite nicely if you have the patience to do so.

Good point i don't mind converting i did my dark riders using glade riders & a mix of DE spearmen corsairs & crossbowmen i'll look into it 4x chariots & 2 hydras would rock

Right then firstly thanks all for your advice & for not just tearing holes in the list i wrote i'm new to this edition & a lot has changed that has made my usual shock & awe tactics not work so well i used to field a WoC army with a lord on dragon with the mark of khrone 2 giants & a load of chosen knights of khrone with an exalted

I have enough points left to either field an assasin with rune of khaine,additional hand weapon & cry of war 131pts OR
6xDark riders-musician,repeater crossbows 139pts

but can't decide which is the best route the sorcress will be in with the spearmen so i could use the assasin to protect her in combat what are peoples thoughts

The main trick with assassins in 8th is that they are one-shot wonders. There is an excellent chance they will kill whatever model you have them jump out at... then they die in the counterattacks of the unit their target was sheltering in.

The new list looks interesting. Would be nice to see some battle reports if you do end up fielding the chariots. As not enough people field these. They are fast, hit hard and can be a great theme for your army. The spear block should be able to handle most enemies thrown its way. Especially with the crossbow units withering anything with firepower before they get close to you. And with the level 4 your going to be able to dictate a lot of the magic phase in most battles. Also I'd ditch the dark riders and have an assassin for throwaway character killing. Best of luck!
