where ever the army sends me

Alright guys I have played a-lot of 40k but am new to fantasy. I played in a 'ard boysish tournament last night which only got through 2 rounds. In my first two games ever I pulled out two draws which I was happy with. I was playing VC but I am intending on playing dwarves. I already have some models and have already struck the forge on my first couple of units of warriors. Here is my proposed list. Please tear it up as I want to be competitive but haven't seen enough armies to be there yet. Any fundamental flaws with my force and so on. Also I am wondering are the dwarves a top level competitor. I will play them as long as they aren't teir three(have enough headaches with my necrons at the momonet).

Dwarf Warriors x25 (250)/(250)
-Warriors
-Shields & Hand weapons
-Full Command

Dwarf Warriors x25 (285)/(535)
-Warriors 1
-Longbeards
-Great weapons
-Full Command

Thane (142)/(677)
-Thane
-Shield
-Ro Resistance
-Ro Stone
-Ro Cleaving
-Ro Snorri Spangelhelm

Grudge Thrower (130)/(807)
-Grudge Thrower
-Ro Accuracy
-Ro Penetrating

Hammerers x20 (295)/1102
-Hammerers
-Full Command
-Ro Battle

Cannon (125)/(1227)
-Cannon
-Ro Forging

that leaves me with 23 points to play with and have really no idea where to put them except for maybe flaming runes and an engineer on a warmachine

Hi Caesar,

Looks like a pretty good list. I like all the elite great weapons for sure. Here are some points I'd make:

My experience with shield warriors is that they still die pretty fast, so bigger is better. The other advantage there is that they can negate other units from being steadfast while your hammerers or longbeards give 'em the chop.

I've had mixed feelings about the Rune of Battle. Static combat res is still useful in some situations, and probably moreso at lower points levels *but* the hammerers need it less than any other unit you have here. I'd consider dropping it altogether.

I take engineers on my grudgethrower and cannon. I recognize its a luxury, but the ability to re-roll misfires and, more crucially, the additional wound often comes in handy for me.

You're also at a points level where it is very difficult to find resources to get a BSB in addition to a general. I find them to be crucial, but it might just not be feasible in this list.

On the subject of heroes, I think a better (and cheaper) setup for that thane might be a mundane great weapon, MR of Gromril and rune of resistance. Right now you're paying 45-ish points for 3 strength 5 attacks at +1 to hit. You could pay for a tenth of that for 3 strength 6 attacks. The only reason not to do this is if you expect to encounter a lot of ethereals...

So- if I was to offer some simple changes it would be to change the thane setup (savings of 23 points), drop the rune of battle (savings of 25) to give you 71 points left to spend.

Use the points saved to buy an extra rank of 5 shield warriors. You can use the remaining 26 for a rune of stoicism on the longbeards or hammerers (for insurance against breaking) or pick up an engineer for the grudgethrower and a rune of burning for the cannon. This last should probably hinge on what you expect to face in your local group.

So, all in all, some very minor changes to a solid list. Please be sure to post battle reports (even short blurbs!) as you play. I'll read with interest.

I went ahead and dropped the runic banner and most the runes on the thane keeping stone and resistance and taking a great weapon for a 3+ rerollable. I was able to throw runes of burning and reloading on the cannon and give both warmachines engineers.
I was wondering though who the thane should march with? I was either the hammereror the longbeards but dont know which really. I dont seem to see many thunderers in any list on here are they still viable. I like the idea of a combined arms approach but have come to find it fails time and again in 40K. Is that true for fantasy as well.

The master rune of gromril is only 20 more points than the rune of stone, and really will make the most of your rune of resistance. I'd really recommend making that change. You don't need the rune of reloading as it will rarely be needed with forging so you can get those points back easily.

My recommendation would be to keep him centrally located, perhaps even with the shield warriors to give them some punch.

Not sure about the Fantasy/40k combined arms comparison. I do find that if you go extreme in any one direction, in many cases, you will roll over some and get rolled by others.

That being said, though- I've not been terribly impressed with core shooters in 8th, and prefer to do my shooting with artillery.
