I'm getting together a game for the Holidays to be played either Christmas Day or maybe even earlier.

The last time my Space Wolves lost against Mech Guards was at last year's 'Ard Boyz. At that time, I was using Ragnar and my list had a little more assault and a little less shooting. It was a minor loss and his Psyker Battle Squad devastated me, making Ragnar's unit run off the board (escorted by a chimera). This time around, I'm going full shooty with a semi-MSU Space Wolf list. This list may be my next 2011 'Ard Boyz list. My plan is to shoot first and then ask questions later. I think this list will out-shoot almost any army, mechguards included.

Mission: Seize Ground - 4 objectives
Deployment: Pitched Battle
Initiative: Imperial Guards

---------------------------------------------------

DEPLOYMENT:

IG deployment. One objective is on the top level of the ruins (we played each level as 2" as there were 5 levels). The other objective is in the large crater.

IG deployment from a different angle.

Space Wolves deployment. 2 land speeder typhoons are hiding behind the impassable terrain. Empty 40mm bases are used as the objectives.

Space Wolves deployment from a different angle.

Vendettas move flat-out with their scout moves.

Space Wolves steal the initiative!!!

---------------------------------------------------

SPACE WOLVES 1

Wolf Guards come in and scatter. Despite cover, they proceed to blow up 1 manticore with their combi-meltas.

Space Wolves movement. Vehicles only move 6" so that all may fire.

Shooting is pretty nasty. Despite cover, I blow up 2 vendettas and wreck the middle one. Both right and left melta-vets take casualties, while the middle melta-vets get pinned. Right melta-vets fail morale and fall back.

The carnage isn't over yet. I also take out the front right chimera and 1 hydra and immobilise the other hydra. I also take out both manticores, 1 with the Wolf Guards and the other with the dreadnought.

After the first turn, I have taken out all 3 vendettas, 2 manticores, 1 squad of veterans (fleeing), 1 chimera and 1 hydra (with the other hydra immobilised). From here on out, it'll just be him trying not to get tabled, so we decided to "reset" the game to see how it would have played out had I not seized the initiative.

PART II to come.....

Really nice slideshow battle report for this one. It seems the IG player was at a disadvantage from the start. What would you have recommended he change/do to better pressure you?

I would say more shooting in the form of more autocannons. The thing I'm finding about guards is that their competitive builds....the so-called Leafblower guard armies...are mainly a mid-range army. They rely mainly on veterans and special weapons to finish off opponents. Outside the 3 vendettas, 2 manticores, a couple of BS3 autocannons and some chimeras, they're not very reliable in a long-ranged firefight. Don't get me wrong, they have a lot of firepower. It's just that MSU-MEQ armies have more firepower at longer range. They've leap-frogged past competitive mechguards and now mechguards have to catch up again.

3 Things:

1 - your list says 3 typhoons, pictures show only 2. Forget one or typo?

2 - your list says scouts, they just didnt come in the 2nd game? Or were they forgotten?

3 - your list says you have duel chooser but never was a CotS setup, forgotten again?

Regardless, a win is a win, congrats on that.

No, there was 3 typhoons. 1 deployed on the right side and 2 on the left side behind the impassable terrain. My 3rd typhoon hasn't been built yet, so I proxied a HF/MM land speeder as the typhoon.

Gadzooks! I totally forgot about them....even when I was writing up the batrep! I've actually never used scouts before. Normally, I would use 2 rifleman dreads. This would've been the my very first time using them (the scouts) and then I completely forget that they were even on my list!

Thanks for pointing that out.

No, I didn't forget about them....just the models. I just told him that I would've placed them on top of his ruins so that I didn't have to go get my models. He was fine with it, considering that he didn't have any infiltrators.

Nice slideshow, I really enjoyed reading/viewing it!

I just started space wolves this week, coming from a year and a half of playing Tyranids. It's an amazing change to be able to say I have power armor, and invulnerable saves on more than one unit in my army! I am going through various reports trying to get some tips and tricks, I used to play vanilla codex marines (for 2 months) before starting my bug swarm so i have a few basics down. One thing - I need more melta guns! I will have to get the melta gun blister from GW....

How do you feel about an army with the single drop pod? I am considering the battleforce to flesh out my marine force and the drop pod would be my only one. I was thinking wolf guard terminators could go into it....

Also i hate to nit-pick but twice during your batrep you mentioned assaulting (or attempting to, in the case where he pulled enough models to prevent the charge) after moving the transport 12". Rhinos and Razors aren't assault vehicles or open-topped, like land raiders and DE raiders. A disembarking squad that gets out after a vehicle moves is prohibited from launching an assault that turn, unless the vehicle has the aforementioned rules. If you are running this build at 'Ard Boyz this year be sure to remember that so nobody calls you out in front of a TO for it.

Otherwise the picture quality was great, and i learned a lot about some competitive unit builds for SW. Thanks for the report!

I usually go 1, 3 or all drop pods. Always the odd number so more will come in on turn 1. If I only use 1 pod, then it's going to be a suicide unit. Drop, destroy/incapacitate something and then die. Therefore, I always keep it cheap. Just a couple of guys with combi-weapons is usually good enough. Terminators would be a waste, especially since SW termies are expensive when kitted out with different equipment. You really don't want a 400pt unit taking on his entire 2000pt army by themselves. At least that's my reasoning.

By all means, nit-pick away. It's how we, the author and the readers, learn so that we can improve ourselves in future games. Yeah, I know you can't assault out of a moving rhino/razorback, but for some reason, I had a brain-fart when writing this report. While I was writing the report, I noticed in the photos that he pulled the models closer to my guys out and for some reason, I associated that with him not wanting to get assaulted. Maybe he did make the mistake of thinking I could assault, or maybe he just wanted the back guys (who were out of LOS) to survive so that none of my other units can shoot at them.

Anyways, it was my mistake so I will go back and edit the slideshow. Thanks for pointing it out.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Oh wait, no. Doh! I did assault after disembarking my flamer-hunters. Oops. Really a brain-fart there. And he didn't catch it. No wonder he removed the guys closest to me the second time. Lol.
