Thinking of running this lord, his intention is to be killy, but next to impossible to kill.
Dwarf lord
Runic Hand weapon w/
Rune of fury
Rune of fire
Runic armor w/
Master rune of gromril
Rune of resistance
Runic ring w/
Master rune of spite
This guy hits with 5 str 4 ws7 I4 attacks that are flaming and has a 1+ rerrolable and a 4++
Costs 270
Tempted to have one that runs like this
Dwarf lord
Runic handweapon w/
Master rune of smiting
Master rune of Alaric the mad
Rune of fire
Attacks with 4 str 4 ws7 I4 attacks that each multiply by D6 and ignore armour and are flaming, this also costs 270 points.
Thoughts, are either viable? Can you suggest somthing better if you dont like these?

Try looking through this thread, there are some nice builds there.
I think your second build is illegal. You can only have one master rune on an item.

Take a gander at the other thread. Unless you really need magic or flaming attacks, you get a lot of bang for your buck out of a mundane great weapon. In most cases, it will out perform the weapon in your first build for 20% of the cost.
You do have a durable build though- with the most noticeable weakness being your vulnerability to killing blow.
Another option to look into (particularly for durable builds, in my mind) is the lord on shield bearers, which are still good value in 8th. The primary challenge tends to be the model!

The first build is nice. Planning on a handweapon and shield Lord also myself as I'm using the Lord from the Skull pass set. Here's what I'm thinking of for mine.
Rune of cleaving
Rune of fire
Rune of speed
Master rune of spite
Rune of stone
Rune of resistance
Rune of preservation
Expensive yes but he still gets a decent rerollable armour save, the 4+ ward and immunity to poison/killing blow (Which is very much worth the points). The weapon runes are just my personal preference as the extra strength and initiative is nice so he can get a few extra hits in against alot of enemies. More often than not will be fielded in 30 to 40 warrior block with shields and the army BSB set up for defence.

The only problem with your set up Lexx, is that the unit of warriors is far too squishy. VS the high volume, hi str units that are Hording up now adays, your warriors will not save as many CR as they could inflict with GW. Hordes of Bigguns, Savage Orcs, WoC, Ogres, etc. (My Meta is LITTERED with these things) all cause significant issues, and all are very difficult to overcome without VERY killy characters of your own/solid BSB support.

Good news. This is the best time in the hobby. Full of promise. GW lets us down each time and we know it but secretly we're hoping that this is the edition that GW gives us a balanced game that can also be played competitively at tournaments. I'm loving it.

True. Ill have to see what the local meta is like with the bigger battles in my parts and take it from there once I've expanded my collection. Only played around 1000-1500 Points last few months with the skull pass dwarfs and some ones I borrowed off a friend or proxied and in 1500 fights he's done really well chewing his way through most things he's faced. I can definitely see the need to stick him and possibly the BSB thane buddy of his in a tougher unit like hammerers or longbeards in time to come.
