I'm thinking about building a Mega Grot Tank http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/New_Stuff/GROT-MEGA-TANK.html and wanted to get some advice on a good cost efficient model to use as a base.

I was thinking some type of battleship model that I can could add a model car/truck wheels to.

So does anyone know of a good ship model that would be the right size?

I would use a King tiger tank as the base, the rest can be done with just plastic card. I think you can get away with 1:35? (cant quite remember the scale that fits 40k figs)

only problem I see is that the King Tiger Tank still looks like a tank, when I see the the this I think WW2 style war ship, at least on top.

To answer your question I've heard that 1/48 scale the close for vehicles, but if your talking ships I don't know know what scale would be good.

In my experience of orky scratchbuilding, always sort out the tracks/wheels first, and attach them to a nice sturdy box of plasticard (to get the approximate vehicle width and height right). Then add all the fiddly shapes, starting with any looted bits (e.g. turrets and/or weapons) with fixed sizes. Fill in any gaps with more plasticard 'armour'. Then add fake rivets galore.

The Mega Grot Tank looks far more tank than ship, so a model/toy tank would also be an easier conversion base than a ship. I don't see any listing of the Mega Grot Tank's size, but judging by the crew size, I'm guessing something like a 1:35 medium tank (e.g. Sherman or Panzer 3) or 1:48 heavy (e.g. Tiger) would be about right. Try to pick something that _doesn't_ have immediately recognisable road wheels and suspension, so that the final model will look more orky and less "converted model tank". Check out your local toy shop too, but be careful with toy plastic - it's often not polystyrene and can be difficult to cut and glue and paint.
