So, I've had this idea, and after some quick prelim sketches, I came out with the terrain.

I appologise for the poor lighting in advance. my whitebox was recycled.

this is the general jist of it.
I'm gonna have four bret knights chargine across the ford. I'll have one or two who've already engaged, and are fighting with swords. [spare models...]

if anyone has any ideas about broken lances, I'd love some help.

The Ford

again

The stones are Slaterock from the basing kit.

here, the rapids are painted to make them look like, well, rapids. the major disturbance in the ford is this rock, to represent that, I also have some enchanted blue to make it look more defined.

The Rockbed there is also slate, but small peices of slate too. I think it works well.

The base was painted browns then overcoated in medium grain sand, and then flock grass. the foliage is just moss that you could buy at a model train shop.

The materials I've used are...

PVA glue [both to seal the wood it's mounted on and to bind the scenics]
Scorched, Vermin and bestial brown
Regal, enchanted blue
Skull white
slate basing materials
Hobby sand
hobby static glade grass
moss foliage [no brandname]
Citadel Water effects

Additionally, I used
A saw [to cut the chipwood. not so important though]
A large drubrush [works wonders at this scale.]
A large brush.
A temperer stick [to help make the paint all rough around the stones.]

how are you going to model the horses splashes as they cross the ford, or are they going to be on either side?

For the broken lances, just splice a toothpick into the center of a lance, then break the toothpick. Or break the toothpick first and then splice it in; both ways should work.

Painting and ripple effects.

Thanks for the lance tip.

Well, I've never actually done it myself, it just seems that would work...

i think they should be thundering across, not making "dainty" ripples.

No. Ripple effects is a product.

And You obviously don't quite realise how difficult it is for a horse to cross a ford. the thing isn't exactly calm water, though maybe that'd be better. they can't really afford to be charging too much.

Oh, sorry didn't know that.

I understand but IMHO its not very dynamic to have them wading through to some epic battle across the ford.

Against ten gors? Hardly. Top speed is 60km/hr. Crossing a stream at even 20km/ hr would be enough (which is still very fast, but slow enough that the horse can avoid getting caught by craggy stones (it has a chance to apprise the situation before crossing.) but at the length of that little ford, it is also entirely possible for the horse just to cross by jumping it. Its less then a meter long.

That would be just awesomely dramatic... the horse leaping the ford, the knight spearing an enemy in mid-leap, the lance shattering... catching it all and making it look 'caught in motion' would be COOL!

hahah. not without extensive pins. and that won't be looking any good.

Sorry guys, I've been meaning to take some photos. I'll get some updates soon.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

staring over the shoulder of an ungor

Lance through the chest

Horse is a bit close to the ungor. but the sword is gonna be placed in good order.

note with this photo, the speed physics of this scene don't work. It seems even at a trot - 20k/hr they'd be going at about 5m/s so, in the two seconds it takes to draw a sword after dropping a lance, he'd have moved alot farther. I also used the horse head to show the knight forcing him to slow down, to give an air of realism... I think noone would've cared, however.

concealed pinning. drilling a hole into the actual chip board is better then supergluing plastic to sand...

the business end of a lance... and the gor settles the deal.

by using two different horse peices [from two types of horses, that is] I've made it look like he's jumping. what do you think?

the sorry about the slow update. cameras been hassleing me.

i love it, its really come together, i think if you could model the jumping horse's "cloak" (i'm not sure what its really called) so it follows the horses position it would be perfect.

Sorry for the slow update, just thought you'd like to see.

knight is charging into a ungor, sword withdrawn. knight has a base put in place to allow him to jump the ford.

horse barding has been washed with asurmen blue. good or bad?
